Greek Salad V

Reviewed: Nov. 22, 2007
22 November 2007, Thanksgiving Day ~ Of all the dishes we had today for our Thanksgiving dinner, this GREEK SALAD V was by far the best! It's like eating a breath of fresh air...so light and tasty! I visited Athens and some of the Greek Islands a few years ago. My favorite food there was the Greek Salad...and this one was SUPERLATIVE and tasted just like those I had in Greece. Additionally, it's such a colorful dish. Nothing can compare to the combination of feta cheese, tomatoes, cucumbers, red onions and Kalamata olives. Oooh, it's after 8pm and yet that makes me want to get into the frig and eat some of the Greek Salad V leftovers. NOTE: I didn't layer the salad. Instead I just mixed it all when first made so the flavors could blend. Ciao, Poni (rhymes with Bonnie)

Tropical Coffee Cake

Reviewed: Nov. 22, 2007
THIS DESERVES A 10 STAR RATING: 22 November 2007 -- I made this for Thanksgiving morning today and as soon as I took my first bite I said, 'I THINK THIS IS THE BEST COFFEE CAKE I'VE EVER HAD!' My adult son, who had previously stated that he wants to start accumulating recipes of all the great dishes I've made in past years, said after taking his first bite, 'This goes in The Book for sure!!' I changed NOTHING in this recipe which is so very simple to make, but if I were to do so I think it would be to simply add some chopped Macadamia nuts to the topping or the cake mix itself. We were surprised at just how light the cake itself is and it's as good later when it has cooled off as it IS hot right out of the oven. If you're reading my review just know that **YOU CAN'T GO WRONG WITH THIS COFFEE CAKE!** Everyone will remember how YUMMY it was!! Ciao...Poni (rhymes with Bonnie)

Favorite Lentil Soup

Reviewed: Oct. 29, 2007
This soup is really yummy. The only change I made was to add a bit of chopped jalapeno peppers for a wee bit of zing. TO SOLA, who rated on 7 Aug 05: YOU CHANGED ABOUT 99% OF THE INGREDIENTS AND THEN SAID IT WASN'T SOMETHING YOU WANT TO EAT OVER A FEW DAYS...AND YOU GAVE IT 4 STARS. ---> For crying out loud, if you change just about every ingredient in the entire recipe, DO THE DECENT THING AND DON'T RATE IT DOWN!! I couldn't believe you did that when I read the reviews. Geez!!

Jan Hagel Cookies

Reviewed: Oct. 19, 2007
Lordy! Lordy! These cookies were utterly fantastic and, surprise, they didn't even have chocolate in them!! I found that a double recipe would beautifully fill a large cookie sheet. I finely chopped the nuts in order to nicely cover the entire surface. Who wouldn't love these cookies!!

Cranberry Apple Gelatin Mold

Reviewed: Dec. 27, 2001
I prepared this salad for Christmas dinner this year. It was pretty good while I was having it with other food, but since then I've eaten it alone and it leaves quite a bitter taste in my mouth.

Banana Crumb Muffins

Reviewed: Dec. 8, 2001
I had a yearning for something warm and sweet this evening. I leafed through recipes I'd printed out and came upon this muffin recipe. I made it and found that it came out of the oven looking quite unattractive...it had run all over the top of the muffin pan. Well, what a glorious surprise because these are, without a doubt, the BEST banana muffins I've ever had!!! One bite and I was amazed at how a single muffin...using basic ingredients not unlike all other banana muffin recipes...could taste to strikingly better than any other I've ever had, EVER! Lisa, if I had a gun I'd give you a Ten-Gun-Salute. Thank millions because I'll be making these muffins 20 years from now. Next time, however, I'll surely put walnuts in it.

Fried Onion Rings

Reviewed: Dec. 1, 2001
Voila ~ The PERFECT comfort food!! They don't get much better than this. Outstanding ...wouldn't change a thing. Coming home from church today a thought INSTANTLY popped into my head, "Oooooh, wouldn't those French Fried Onion Rings taste perfect right now!" For some reason that thought quite often crosses my mind. Thanks Jill, you done VERY good with this one. :-)

J.P.'s Big Daddy Biscuits

Reviewed: Nov. 10, 2001
Oh Johnny, oh Johnny, how you can bake!! I rate my recipes on a scale of 1-4, with the rare exception deserving a 5. Well Johnny dear, your biscuits received the grand and glorious 5-Star rating in my household. I do have one question: The recipe calls for shortening. Is that Crisco or butter? I used Crisco and they turned out beautifully. Now I'll wait and see what the texture is in the morning. I think I'll have to check and see what other recipes you've submitted, Johnny me boy. Your biscuits will be made over and over and over again in my household! Caio...Poni (rhymes with Bonnie)

Chocolate Raspberry Cloud

Reviewed: Jul. 25, 2001
I was compelled to make this dessert after reading all the reviews. I'm a good cook who truly enjoys spending time in the kitchen...but there wasn't one person in my household of 5 who liked this dish. In fact, it sat around uneaten for quite awhile, and I ultimately threw away the last half. Considering how much we all like chocolate and desserts in general, I was really disheartened. I can't help but wonder if I did something wrong. Or perhaps that's the way it's supposed to turn out...but it's just not to our taste. And considering the numerous trips I made to various grocery stores in order to get all the ingredients, it was quite a letdown...for whatever reason.

Absolute Mexican Cornbread

Reviewed: May 7, 2001
Sorry, but I didn't care for this cornbread at all. It was heavy, not the least bit light and flaky like one expects with cornbread, and more than anything else...it seemed like someone had poured a liquid all over it and it was absorbed throughout. The taste itself was okay, but nothing striking.

Angela's Easy Breaded Chicken

Reviewed: May 5, 2001
This was absolutely STUPENDOUS! Short, easy, and delicious...who could want more. It's definitely a 5-Star recipe, no hands down. BUT...instead of Italian dressing, I used Best Foods CITRUS SPLASH ORANGE VINAGRETTE dressing, and though I didn't marinate it at all, I can't help but think letting it sit in the dressing for an hour or so would be even better. ALSO...I had some homemade bread crumbs already made up. What made them work out so well was that they weren't totally pulverized, and in fact were random sizes, which gave a great crunch to the chicken. Also they were made of PLAIN WHITE BREAD, so there weren't any spicy crumbs to compete with the citrus tang of the dressing. Everyone at the table kept commenting about how truly delicious the chicken was! Thanks so ve-ee-ee-ry much for this recipe! I have no doubt but that I'll be making it 20 years from now, and still getting compliments!

Deep Dark Chocolate Cake

Reviewed: Apr. 24, 2001
This cake was EXCELLENT, but I'd make some changes. 1) There wasn't enough frosting, so I'd double it. 2)Better than doubling the frosting, I think I'll experiement with a different center... perhaps whipped topping with finely chopped pistachio nuts mixed in it? Or perhaps something with a cherry taste? It's unbelievably rare that I think a dessert is too rich, but this one came close. A fresh, crisp center with a contrasting taste might be perfect. This recipe is definitely a keeper!!

Baked Beans II

Reviewed: Apr. 24, 2001
I really didn't care for this recipe. Though I've made baked beans somewhat like this in the past, these just tasted too sharp (for lack of a better word.)There's no way one could sit down with a large bowl of these beans and a piece of corn bread...the taste was too strong.

Light and Fresh Dressing

Reviewed: Apr. 18, 2001
This recipe is OUTSTANDING, EASY and FAST!! In fact, it's something I'd enjoy having in my frig at all times. I suggest finely chopping the onions, and in fact I put it all in my blender for about 3-4 seconds. (After all, nobody wants chunky salad dressing.) I served it with fresh spinach leaves and leafy red lettuce, then added sliced red onions and mandarin orange slices. Goodness, was it ever good! A real keeper for sure.

Chocolate Lovers' Favorite Cake

Reviewed: Apr. 9, 2001
Take this to the bank: Print out this recipe, laminate it, and keep it forever...because that's how long you'll keep making it. But despite my grand and glorious love of chocolate, this particular cake definitely DOESN'T need any frosting of any sort. The only problem I had was getting the cake out of the pan while hot without it ending up in pieces..you see, I was sooo anxious to eat a piece. So perhaps a healthy dusting of flour in the pan might be helpful. My serving suggestion: Serve nice and warm, right out of the oven, topped with FROZEN Cool Whip. That's the best definition around for "Died And Gone To Heaven!" This is one recipe that deserves far more than 5-stars!

Swedish Nut Cake

Reviewed: Apr. 9, 2001
This cake was a great disappointment to me. I had guests and we all agreed that it wasn't worth making again. The only thing that even barely began to save it was the fact that the nuts added a bit of a crunch.I love cooking and take delight in trying out new recipes weekly. This one was definitely a disappointment.
