Mom's Country Gravy

Reviewed: May 12, 2012
I agree with Janine...to get the right flavor, fry up some sausage or bacon first, set it aside. Next, pour off the fat. NOW start your gravy... Great starter recipe! Sometimes I add a pinch of red pepper flakes for some kick...try it, you'll like it!

Dry Buttermilk Ranch Mix

Reviewed: May 12, 2012
I used a bit more garlic powder and omitted the salt. Yum! On a warm and sunny spring day, this recipe really helped the salad in our meal stand out. I'm looking forward to using this dry mix in hamburgers, on pork chops and even mixed into chicken salad. This is a keeper!

Irish Pound Cake

Reviewed: Feb. 12, 2012
This recipe has such potential! After following the recipe exactly, I found this cake to be on the "dry" side. Also, upon tasting, I couldn't detect the whiskey at all ~ I was so hoping for a more prominent flavor trace of it. I will definitely make this again, however, next time I'll add maybe a bit more whiskey just to bring the flavor up a notch. Also, I may add 1/2 cup of heavy cream and see where that takes us.

Roast Sticky Chicken-Rotisserie Style

Reviewed: Jan. 1, 2012
Amaze your friends and family with this "sure-thing" rub. Seriously, I use this for so many other recipes: oven roasted whole chicken, grilled beer-up-the-rear chicken, baked chicken thighs later used for chicken and dumplings, hamburger seasoning, etc... The recipe is a tad heavy on the salt, so we cut the recommended amount back a tiny bit. Try it, you'll like it!

French Salad Dressing

Reviewed: Jan. 1, 2012
My son hates all salad dressings, except THIS one! This dressing is very good, but very sweet - so start out on the conservative side with the sugar...you can always add more if needed. Also, this recipe makes quite a bit of dressing, so we cut it in half. It also keeps well in the fridge. Enjoy!

Sauteed Apples

Reviewed: Jan. 1, 2012
This recipe is delicious and a snap to prepare! I popped some of these apples on top of some savory bone-in pork chops - WOW! Next I think I'll serve them with my homemade vanilla ice cream - so many options!

German Christmas Gingerbread

Reviewed: Jan. 1, 2012
Yum...this is the perfect compromise between a spice cake and the German gingerbread dessert my Oma made for so many years. My cake was done at 55 minutes - so make sure you check it early! I substituted the almonds with pecans, and also used golden raisins. Do this cake a favor and make a wonderful orange icing using freshly squeezed juice and zest.

Gluehwein

Reviewed: Jul. 1, 2011
Good place to start, but in my opinion there's room for improvement. Gluewein is tough to nail down, as tastes can differ between regions. This recipe is still worth trying, for sure. :)

Absolutely the BEST Rich and Creamy Blue Cheese Dressing Ever!

Reviewed: Jul. 1, 2011
Very good - I made it even better by substituting the sour cream with Greek yogurt. Also, I added 1/2 TBL of heavy cream to create the consistency I prefer. Keeper dressing recipe!

Lemon Lover's Pound Cake

Reviewed: Jul. 1, 2011
Super Duper! I might add a pinch more salt the next time to balance it out, but otherwise, a solid and delicious fool-proof pound cake. This has made it to my, "Favorite Summer Desserts," box ~

Kneecaps

Reviewed: Apr. 7, 2011
This recipe won't disappoint! First, we halved this recipe and discovered it made approx. 4 dozen? We then used the dough to make our version of doughnut holes. They fried up quickly and were nice and airy inside. Finally, we tossed them in a bowl full of cinnamon and sugar to coat. Super-Duper :)

White Fruit Cake

Reviewed: Dec. 24, 2010
Exactly what I was looking for..and boy, was it good! Only some minor tweaks (2 1/2 cups golden raisins, 3 cups chopped pecans and no currants), and still it was fantastic. I have an extra loaf in the pantry that's been receiving a TBL of Apricot Brandy everyday for a week...can't wait to try it tonight!

Cream Cheese Frosting II

Reviewed: Jun. 22, 2010
Really great, this frosting is creamy and delicious. Not too sweet, this version allows for a tiny tweak here and there. I added a drop or two of pure lemon oil...yum -

Cavatini II

Reviewed: Jul. 22, 2009
I tweaked this recipe only a tiny bit...we ADORE garlic, so a couple of extra cloves found their way in! Next time, however, I will probably cut the tomato paste in half...even after adding a touch of baking soda, we still felt the need to pop a couple of TUMS after dinner. Great base recipe, delicious on its own...while still leaving room for custom touches of your own (extra veggies, different cheeses). Next time, I might add some fresh basil, YUM!

The Best Steak Marinade

Reviewed: Jul. 12, 2009
Wow..this marinade was fantastic! Don't let the simplicity of this recipe fool you..it really comes together. I made it exactly as written, went easy on the salt and marinaded for 2 hours. Hubby loved it and the kids asked when we could make steak like "that" again! I will be making this marinade again for sure.

Authentic Kicked-Up Syrian Hummus

Reviewed: Jul. 12, 2009
After trying many recipes this month..(I'm on a Hummus kick!), this one was the best. As others have mentioned, it was a bit thicker than I prefer so the addition of some water and olive oil fixed that issue! I also added a teeny-tiny amount of sugar to finish it off. Next time, I can't wait to add maybe some roasted red peppers or cilantro or whatever..this recipe really inspired me.

Mom's Best Peanut Brittle

Reviewed: Dec. 22, 2006
Pretty darn good....and yes I would agree, bringing the sugar mixture up to 300 degrees is essential! I opted to lightly use PAM Cooking Spray on my cookie sheet and that seemed to work perfectly - the brittle pieces lifted instantly. I also added a dash of vanilla extract and used cashews instead of peanuts. This recipe is a keeper!

Chicken Soup III

Reviewed: Oct. 25, 2006
This super soup was a family pleaser! My kids really liked it - my husband too! Only changes - added 3 chopped garlic gloves, used canned carrots and peas because I was out of fresh! And omitted the salt at the end. Will make again very soon!

Kim's Macaroni Salad

Reviewed: Jun. 30, 2006
Oh gosh, I hate to be the party-pooper here... This salad came out better than most...however, I had to make a few adjustments. I started right away by cutting the vinegar in half. Also, it was a bit too salty for the men in my house, so next time I'll only add salt to taste. To this recipe I also added a tsp. of pimentos, a tad more sugar and a finely diced carrot. With my changes, I'll probably make this salad again!
