Tortilla Pinwheels

Reviewed: Dec. 15, 2008
This is a good starter recipe for pinwheels. My mom made these all the time for Christmas, I believe with salami instead of ham. Nothing special but nevertheless a staple. I'd take out the green onions myself, just out of preference, but this is a good interchangeable recipe.

Spicy Tortilla Roll-Ups

Reviewed: Dec. 3, 2008
My mom always made these for get-togethers. They're pretty good... I used to eat them one after another, but being vegan can no longer do so. Anyway, a classic recipe you can use over and over again.

Hearty Lentil Soup

Reviewed: Nov. 20, 2008
Pretty good. A very basic, essential soup recipe. It's filling and pretty flavorful, just a typical lentil/barley soup. I used vegetable bouillon and forgoed the cheese.

Barley, Lentil and Mushroom Soup

Reviewed: Nov. 3, 2008
This was pretty good, just a traditional soup I guess. Good flavor. I used vegetable bouillon instead of chicken for vegetarian soup, and I skipped the olive oil, but the taste was the same I assume. A good generic recipe. Seemed like a lot of mushrooms in the recipe though... I didn't use as much. And I couldn't find the specified mushroom in the recipe - I found the button ones but not the other kind. Anyway, yeah, I'd recommend it as a good cold-weather recipe or whatever.

Country Soup in a Jar

Reviewed: Jun. 18, 2008
Really flavorful, and healthy too. A great vegan dish, as I am vegan myself. It is full of protein which makes it quite delectable if I do say so myself. I would just add that the water should probably be cut in half as it makes quite a lot, and the entire quantity would not fit in the crockpot. I made it without the bouillon or the pasta and it still tasted fantastic. Yet it is hard to distinguish the flavors of all the ingredients as they all sort of blend together, and that was my only misfortune with the recipe.

Veggie Pesto Soup

Reviewed: Apr. 9, 2008
This was alright at best. I really couldn't taste any of the tomato pesto, even after I doubled the suggested amount, what with the 6 1/2 cups water in which it was diluted. That seemed like a LOT for just four servings... maybe cut down on the water a couple cups. Another thing... there was way too much onion in it - good for flavor but they start to burn your tastebuds after eating so many. Maybe a half an onion for each batch would do better. I would give 3 1/2 since it really wasn't that bad, but that's not an option.

Vegan Stew

Reviewed: Mar. 27, 2008
I did not care for this recipe. It was quite spicy, which is a good thing normally - except when it overpowers the flavor. Speaking of flavor, outside of the spices, there was none. I looked in the pot while I was cooking and said, "This is a very beige meal." The parsnips and turnips, which I'd never tried before, were not good, and I doubt I'll eat them again. One last thing... this makes a LOT of stew. I cut the recipe in half and I could hardly finish one serving. Two servings alone took up an around-three-quart pan. I would suggest something, but nothing could really fix this recipe without completely changing it. Oh well.

Monica's Vegetable and Seitan Stew

Reviewed: Oct. 5, 2006
This was pretty good, but not great. There's not much to it. Good for a light meal though, but not when you want flavor. I didn't use the seitan since I couldn't find any, but used kidney beans instead.

Asian Coleslaw

Very good - the peanut butter really adds to the flavor of it. I could eat a lot of this.

Mock Babe Ruth Bars

Reviewed: Jun. 4, 2006
This tasted like a granola bar, not Baby Ruth... but still good. The oats were kind of crumbly so I might suggest adding 1/2 cup butter to the recipe. Also, there was barely enough chocolate/peanut butter mixture to cover the bars. I might change it to 1 1/2c chocolate and 3/4c peanut butter since there didn't seem to be that much peanut butter once all combined.

Babe Ruth Bars II

Reviewed: Jun. 3, 2006
This recipe is a lot like the other one. I used chunky peanut butter instead of peanuts, 1/2 cup corn syrup, chocolate chips and 4 c cornflakes. The directions were a lot better stated in this recipe, making them look a little more appetizing than the other one. Still don't taste that great though.

Babe Ruth Bars

Reviewed: Jun. 3, 2006
These taste nothing like the bar from what I remember. They are so crumbly - I would definitely NOT recommend cutting them before they cool unless you plan to have a big messy pile on your serving plate. Not good tasting for the mess they made, though they are extremely easy to make. I used chunky peanut butter, 1/2 cup corn syrup and 4 cups cornflakes (which got all squishy and weird) for this, as recommended by various people.

Apricot-Coconut Squares

Reviewed: Jun. 2, 2006
Pretty good tasting, except the crust is very thin and crispy. I might recommend using a smaller pan and maybe not baking the crust ahead of time, just baking it with the topping on it already.
