About this Cook
I enjoy cooking. Baking is my passion, much to the chagrin of my husband and son who rarely eat sweets. My daughter and I are big sweet eaters though.
My favorite things to cook
Pies - I love entering pie baking contests, anything ethnic! Growing up in rural PA, I craved culture, particularly through food. Lately I've got my son on a gluten-free casein-free diet and am enjoying the challenge of adapting recipes to suit his needs.
My favorite family cooking traditions
We were very traditional American. My grandma could make chocolate chip cookies to perfection without a measuring cup or recipe in front of her. She always had them on hand and served them with a diet soda! (go figure.) Still can't eat one without a diet soda and remember her.
My cooking triumphs
Baklava with my mom in 10th grade! It was delicious. And an amazing lemon meringue cake I made for my mother-in-law's birthday.
My cooking tragedies
Not so much a tragedy as simply my nemesis; bread. I don't have a breadmaker nor a stand mixer. Perhaps they would help but I have never made a yeast-based bread product that turned out!

Mom's Apple Fritters
I was pretty disappointed how these turned out after all the work I put into them. They were soggy and bland. I tasted as I fried and kept trying to make adjustments. I made a couple super tiny ones - think the size of a quarter - that turned out fairly crisp. And as I fried I added cinnamon and more sugar to the batter and those were much more flavorful. I kept checking the oil temp to ensure it was hot enough. The original recipe tastes more like a soggy apple quick bread than a fritter.

Pecan Turtle Bars
I regret finding this recipe because they are so addictive! (And so easy) They are delicious and perfect as written - light, crisp, buttery, a salty sweet delight! Make sure you don't overcook the caramel - and I did mine in a non-stick saute pan rather than a sauce pan. I was very concerned when the crust was so crumbly - almost powdery - but once I poured on the caramel it mixed with the crust and nuts and created a wonderful treat.

Asian Grilled Chicken
I wasn't too thrilled with the flavor. Probably would have been better with some honey or more sweetness. Good heat though. Will try again with more sweetness.
