About this Cook
Well, my hobbies aren't listed, really. I'm a writer who enjoys kung fu, beer and making dinner for friends. I got started when I was really young.
My favorite things to cook
Matzoh soup, protein and dumplings (Southern America Texas Style), My Beef and Burgundy Stew, anything vegetarian.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Well, I got started cooking with my great grandmother who told me stories about the American Depression and made doughnuts out of canned biscuit dough. My dad's mom makes beautiful cakes.
My cooking triumphs
Roasted Corn and Poblano Pudding. learning to make cherry pie from scratch. making really good matzoh soup, Chai ice cream with spicy candied pecans, Passion tea sorbet. That first batch of Polenta Lasagna.
My cooking tragedies
Many of my tomato sauces (only at home, when I cooked professionally, I could make them go right)..Those first few cherry pies. Took quite a few omlettes before I finally made good ones.

German Baby
Incredible. Did it in my cast iron skillet, let it cook a little too long, but it's okay, as the crunchy parts soaked up the sauce I made. I melted some butter, sauteed a sliced Pink Lady apple in the butter with a touch of cinnamon and a tablespoon or two of brown sugar. This recipe is fabulous and easy; it uses ingredients I always have around the kitchen so it's a super go-to for the day we don't make it to the grocery store or lack energy to make dinner an all-out production. Enthusiastically recommended by an 8 year old, for what that's worth! I simply don't understand why anyone would go out to order this at the markup that's usually charged when this is so simple and frugal to make.

Honey Wheat Muffins
These are hearty muffins, and the perfect vehicle for a chocolate fix. I added several tablespoons of plain yogurt, a couple tablespoons of sugar, cinnamon and 1/2 c cocoa powder. Still a healthier muffin, but certainly not lacking in the flavor department.

Baked Tortilla Chips
It was a terrible situation: Fresh from the farmer's market avocadoes and limes in a creamy guac. But, no chips! This recipe to the rescue! Brushed oil on with a pastry brush, sprinkled w/ coarse salt and cumin. Kept an eye on them in the oven. These are thick and hearty, like the chips I've had in Mexico. Better than the store.
