Apple Cake and Butter Sauce

Reviewed: Oct. 20, 2002
I was looking for something "autumny" to match the weather and this sounded good. Although we only had one apple in the house (we added 2 tablespoons oil so it didn't turn out dry), it was awesome!!! I can't wait to try it with 2 apples. I had my hubby take some to my picky next-door neighbor (okay, she's my mother), and she called requesting this as her standing birthday cake from this day forward. My kids didn't like it, but they don't like anything without chocolate or vanilla, so their opinions don't count. The only thing I might change is adding raisins....I think that would make this the best cake ever. Thanks for an outstanding recipe.

Chocolate Rum Balls I

Reviewed: Jan. 1, 2001
Oh my goodness!! I've had rum balls before, but never quite this good. I found this recipe at the last minute and found I didn't have any rum. With the stores all closed, I used Kahlua in 1 recipe and Ameretto in another. I got rave reviews! Thanks for my new favorite recipe.

Berry Shooters

Reviewed: Jan. 20, 2003
I've never had these before, but many friends recommended them. I used Berry blue jello with Wild Berry Schnapps (vodka gives me a headache), Pineapple jello with Wild Berry, and Apricot jello with Peach Schnapps. Everyone loved them. I will make on regular basis as an "adult" dessert. Thanks.

Praline Sweet Potatoes

Reviewed: Apr. 11, 2004
I made this for Easter dinner. I LOVE sweet potatoes, but hate the mess of "candying" them. This was the perfect solution. I used canned sweet potatoes to cut down on prep time and cut the sugar in half. I also just mixed all topping ingredients without the butter, then melted the butter and drizzled it on top. I also used only 1 egg, as I didn't want to take a chance on the dish being runny. It was excellent. Just sweet enough, and the vanilla added the perfect touch. Will make this often.

Apricot-Pineapple Dream

My mother has made this recipe for years, but she uses apricot or peach flavored jello. Extremely easy and tastes great.

Garlicky Beet Delight

Reviewed: Jan. 8, 2002
I love beets in salads, but had never used them as a side dish, as my husband hates them. I tried this recipe, and it's pretty good. Even my 4 year old (who is a veggie lover like her mom) ate it up, and she's not big on garlic. Of course, hubby and other two kids wouldn't even try it. Their loss. Will be using again, but prefer the beets on my salad.

Grated Potato Dumplings

Reviewed: Feb. 5, 2006
This is the long lost recipe my gram used for many years, except she always added an egg. Her family moved from Hungary to Germany, then to the United States. We never really had a name for the dish she prepared, but she would make these potato dumplings, then fry them with cottage cheese. It never sounded (or looked) very appetizing, but it was oh so good tasting! Extremely fattening, and off my diet plan, this is a birthday/special occasion treat. Thanks for the memories!

Teriyaki Chicken Salad

So good, and so easy to make. The chicken turned out a little dry, but definately a keeper. Nice summertime main course.

Caroline's Famous Slush

Reviewed: Jan. 1, 2002
A friend of mine gave me this recipe some years ago, but I lost it. The difference was it didn't call for Vodka, but apricot brandy instead. When I made it before, I bought peach schnapps, which worked quite well. In fact, we decided not to make it a slush, but a punch. Now that I've found the recipe again, I made it for a small New Year's Eve party last night, this time making the slush, and using wild berry schnapps. Out of this world! I'm not a drinker, so I like something a little sweet, but not too sweet. This is perfect. Thanks for giving the recipe back. I'll be sure not to lose it this time.

Warm and Spicy Autumn Punch

Reviewed: Nov. 25, 2001
This isn't what you'd expect from something called "Punch", but it's really good. I didn't think it was spicy enough, so next time I'll add more cinnamon sticks. The kids drank it up! First time for everything, I guess. Perfect for my daughter's autumn birthday (Oct 30), and the kids think it takes like apple cider.

Brown Sugar Smokies

Reviewed: Jan. 25, 2003
I just made these....haven't had the party yet and they may not make it that long! I figured I could bake them first, then place them on a glass serving plate and pop in the microwave right before serving. I didn't use skewers...just used toothpicks. Excellent blend of flavors.

Banana Anna

Reviewed: Jun. 1, 2002
This was so great! My husband whipped them up, and added about 1/8 cup powdered sugar....bananas were a little bitter...and it was perfect! Will use again and again. My 7 year old didn't like it much, but he's not fond of bananas. Can't wait to have my girls try it...they love bananas!

Strawberry Oatmeal Breakfast Smoothie

Reviewed: Jun. 1, 2002
I was eager to try this, as I have to eat breakfast or I get physically ill, and I hate breakfast foods. I love strawberries, and I love oatmeal, so why not? It was a little bland, but not bad. I didn't feel hungry at all. Next time I will try adding some other fruits, maybe some spices? Overall, I will use this recipe again, but it needs modified a bit.

Donna's Chocolate Zucchini Bread

Reviewed: Sep. 24, 2001
This was a great recipe. It's easy, quick, and sooo good! I made it for my brother in law, who loves zucchini bread but won't eat anything I make. He took half a loaf to work for lunch! Even my kids ate it. What a wonderful way to eat veggies.

Johnny Marzetti III

Reviewed: Oct. 30, 2001
I'm still looking for a recipe for something similar that my husband and I ate at school. When I read this, I thought I found it. I was disappointed. Although it's not bad, it's not particularly good. It's a good recipe to keep on hand, since it requires so few ingredients, and I usually have them on hand, but it won't be in my regular rotation. I found the tomato soup too sweet and the cheese overpowering. Maybe next time I'll use more tomato sauce and eliminate the soup, and use cheddar instead of American cheese.

Ham Salad II

Reviewed: Jan. 3, 2001
My husband had never had homemade ham salad, and we had a ton of ham left over from the holidays, so this seemed ideal. He is the cook, for the most part, and couldn't stop raving about it. I felt the same way once I tasted it!

Shepherd's Pie VI

Reviewed: Sep. 7, 2010
I loved the flavor of this recipe, but it did not have the gravy I expect from Sheperd's Pie. My kids and husband didn't like it because of the carrot layer. They prefer carrots in chunks so they can pick them out lol. However, I thought it was spectacular against the mashed potatoes. I'd mix the two if I could get away with it. I will keep the recipe, but will not be a regular around here.

A Potato Salad Sandwich

Reviewed: Apr. 4, 2004
I've done this for years. I don't like meat, and my family does, so this is a substitute for making a separate meal for myself. It's also delicious. Here in Pittsburgh it's acceptable to add coleslaw to your sandwich, but I get strange looks when I ask for a sandwich with JUST coleslaw, potato salad, or macaroni salad. Glad I'm not the only one!
