Grain and Nut Whole Wheat Pancakes

Reviewed: Nov. 5, 2010
So yummy. I could eat them w/o syrup, coming from someone who sees pancakes as a syrup delivery mechanism.

Garlic Spinach Soup

Reviewed: Jun. 2, 2010
I was worried about all the ginger, because I'm not much of a fan of ginger. The broth was a little heavy with that ginger bite, but when eaten with the vegetables and noodles, it was really great. I'll definitely do this soup again, as it was filling, easy to make, and low-cal. I might have estimated proportions a bit, but followed the recipe and wouldn't recommend any changes.

What a great, relatively low-cal recipe. Definitely a keeper. I followed the recipe exactly. No changes to recommend.

Spinach and Pasta Shells

Reviewed: Feb. 1, 2010
This is a keeper. My family loved it. Use fresh spinach. It's not much harder to wash it in a salad spinner and chop it up a little and you gain all the vitamins and freshness. hmm... I think I might like to make it again tonight.... topped with parmesan cheese.

BREAKSTONE'S Fruit-Filled Coffee Cake

Reviewed: Feb. 1, 2010
I want to give this 2.5 stars. This would be great for a church function where you need a dessert that is easy and fits in a pan and looks cool and doesn't cost much to make. But I wouldn't make this for a distinguished guest, because it's just not very impressive. The cake is only as good as your cake mix. A little cinnamon doesn't make a cake mix great. And a can of pie filling doesn't taste fresh no matter what you do to it. But did we eat it all? Yes. And the kids loved it, because they love cake. So, the rating depends on what kind of recipe you need. functional: 4 stars. taste: 2 stars.

Homemade Vanilla Pudding

Reviewed: Feb. 1, 2010
This works out great for banana pudding, although it's super sweet. It tastes like the milk at the bottom of a bowl of frosted flakes. :) The first time I made it, it was way too thick to soak the vanilla wafers the way I had hoped it would. The second time, it was way too runny and all the wafers floated up to the top and I couldn't get them to stay down. So, it's better to cook it the right length so it thickens up. But next time we'll use less sugar.

Thick Chocolate Pudding

Reviewed: Feb. 1, 2010
I really like this recipe better than the other one we were using from Allrecipes because it is not so sweet. I'm not sure, yet what to do to improve it. I didn't make any changes to the ingredients. Maybe it could use better chocolate. The hershey's cocoa perhaps isn't the best. Next time we'll try the bittersweet cubes.

Chocolate Cream Pudding

Reviewed: Dec. 28, 2009
TOO SWEET! I followed the recipe exactly and it was just too sweet for my taste. And I love things sweet. I had guests who all agreed. The kids ate it really slowly which was another clue that it was too sweet. So, I'll keep looking for the right proportions in other recipes.

Chicken Cordon Bleu I

Reviewed: Dec. 28, 2009
**This is not a dish to make with little kids running around.** Chicken all over my hands and the work area! However, it is bland in a way that kids like it, but not in the way that husbands like it. It wasn't really that hard, but it was time consuming for me to assemble without touching raw-chickeny fingers to everything. One of the reviews had a sauce using cream of chicken, sour cream, and lemon which was a good idea.

David's Yellow Cake

The texture was a little more cornbready than I expected. Didn't taste like it though. It was better than cake from a box. But the texture was a little strange.

Enchiladas Suizas

Reviewed: Dec. 13, 2009
I'm not giving this 5 stars because any recipe that ends up being another excuse to eat a lot of cheese and chicken without being called cheese and chicken (as if the guilt would go away!) doesn't deserve 5 stars. Does this recipe taste good? YES! Do my kids it? YES! Was it hard to make? Not really. Was it company-worthy? Probably. Now, I need to find a recipe that combines lima beans, eggplant, brussel sprouts and cottage cheese in a tasty way, and I'll give that 50 stars!

Clone of a Cinnabon

There's so much to love about this recipe. It's a lot of work, though. And it makes a lot of bad-for-you food, so I guess that's not to love. But I'm staring at the leftovers and waiting for my tummy not to feel full so I can have more. So good.

Flavor was just so-so. It was the first time the kids, who will eat anything with carbs, were disappointed when I made their PB&Js with it.

Playgroup Granola Bars

Great recipe. I'm so excited not to buy Nature Valley, now! I reduced the sugar and highly recommend it. There's so much honey in it to sweeten it sufficiently. I like the many possibilities for variations on this recipe. I look forward to another go at it, next time for a crunchier batch.

Simple Carnitas

Great flavor, just go easy on the salt. I used about 75% of what the recipe said and it was just beyond my comfort zone. Everything else was really good. I, too, was impressed with the oranges. I wouldn't have thought to add those but they really worked.

Plum Clafouti

Reviewed: Sep. 3, 2009
I think mine wasn't done quite enough. I gave it 50 minutes (at least) in the convection oven. Maybe I did something wrong along the way. It tasted great and the bottom was a really good pasty crust, but the whole thing didn't hold together too well. I used greengage plums which might be sweeter than the italian variety, so it was sweet enough without adding more sugar. I'd never heard of clafouti (nor had my dinner guests), so it was a little scary making it the first time, but it's worth it to try it again, since we have an abundance of plums this time of year.
