I'm a born and bred southern belle. My family comes from the low country South Carolina on one side, and central and south Alabama on the other -- I'm steeped in Southern Cuisine. Living as close as I do now to the New Orleans area, I love to cook Cajun as well. And here on the Gulf Coast, we love our shrimp, every way you can make it. One thing I'll tell you about the southern folks -- we love our food, and the more of it, the better!
My favorite things to cook
True to my roots, I love to cook southern. I've baked about a zillion buttermilk biscuits in my life, and I'm still in search of the perfect recipe. I love pound cakes, sausage gravy, roast beef, homemade creamed potatoes, fried corn (thank you grandmother!!), stuffed french toast, beer fried shrimp, really good stir fry, oh gosh there are so many...
My favorite family cooking traditions
My son loves to cook eggs with me. He's seven so scrambling his own eggs really makes his day. I also love the Thanksgiving traditions, and baking the first batch of pumpkin bread every year.
My cooking tragedies
I hope there aren't too many of these, but there is ONE for sure. Right after I got married, I wanted to prove that I could really cook for my new husband. So I got in the kitchen, made my own pastry from scratch, and produced 'beef turnovers'. Oh they were TERRIBLE!! They had raisins in them and everything. Why in the world I did that, I'll never know. Sad thing is that I totally followed the recipe and oh they were AWFUL!!
