Burrito Pie

Reviewed: Mar. 25, 2010
FANTASTIC! I was really doubtful about this recipe, but because of all the great reviews I tried it. Boy am I glad I did! I will be making this one often. The flavors all came together wonderfully. This is what I did different, only because I used the ingredients I had on hand. I omitted the black olives and in place of the canned tomatoes and taco sauce, I used a jar and a half of salsa. I also added taco seasoning to the beef. I only used 1 can of refried beans and chose to layer the beans rather than mix them in with the beef. My layers went like this, meat, tortilla, meat, cheese, tortilla, beans, meat, cheese, etc. ending with meat and cheese. I trimmed the tortillas to fit my casserole dish, not doubling them as some reviewers suggested and I added more cheese. Serving with sour cream gave it a finishing touch. This was very easy to essemble and quick to put together.

Cinnamon Roll Coffee Cakes

Okay I guess. I thought this was a little on the dry side. I actually prefer individual sweet rolls. I will not make this again.

Best Big, Fat, Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookie

Reviewed: Mar. 21, 2010
Very good cookie. I used sucanat instead of white and brown sugar. They had a wonderful flavor. They looked like they would be a crisp cookie, but when you bite into them they are nice and chewy.

Danish Pastry Apple Bars II

Reviewed: Feb. 13, 2010
Pretty good. Nice switch from apple pie if bars are what you're looking for. They were nice and thick and held together nice while cutting. I did use 1 1/2 times thepastry recipe with half butter and half lard for extra flakiness. I also used about 1/2 the water called for upon reading the other reviews. I'm glad I did! Instead of sugar I used maple syrup with the apples and used vanilla in the frosting instead of almond flavoring. Oh and I did have to bake in substantially longer. I just that would just depend on what kind of apples were used.

Healthy Banana Cookies

Reviewed: Feb. 13, 2010
I am very much into eating healthy and every once in a while desire a snacky treat. These accomplished the task. However I do not think I would serve them to anyone, nor would anyone else in my family eat them. I did use olive oil instead of the vegetable oil and I did try to jazz them up a bit by adding 1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon, 1/2 tsp. nutmeg and a handful or two chopped walnuts and they still lacked flavor. I do think they have potential with a little more tweeking. I think maybe raisins would have lended more sweetness and texture than the dates. Just my two cents.

Bread Machine Calzone

Reviewed: Feb. 4, 2010
Excellent! The bread was superb! Slightly sweet, light and tender with a nice crunchy crust. I did not use the powdered milk instead I just substituted the water with milk as suggested by other reviewers. For the filling I also added sauteed yellow peppers and onions. I made the exquisite pizza sauce from this site and served it on the side rather than putting it in the calzone. I've made calzones and stromboli several times before and this one was definitely the best! I will look not further, but will continue to use this recipe. The braiding also worked better than the traditional rolling.

Barbecued Beef

Excellent! My whole family loved it. The only change that I made was to use sucanat sugar in place of the brown sugar to make it a little healthier.

Cheese-Filled Coffee Cakes

Reviewed: Jan. 31, 2010
WOW!!!!! Great recipe! Professional outstanding taste and appearance! These were exceptional! The dough was tender and soft. The flavor was exquisite! I did reduce the sugar in the cream cheese mixture to 2/3 cup, but would reduce it further to 1/2 cup next time I make these. I also didn't use the almond flavoring, but used vanilla instead. Hubby doesn't like almond. Other that that I followed the recipe as written. As far as the final steps in shaping the pastry, I followed the directions for one, I rolled both ends together from the long ends on one leaving the cream cheese visible in the center, and for the other two I added raspberry preserves and placed the cream cheese and preserves down the middle and cut strips on both sides to form a braid. I think I owould do all three the same way next time. I really had no preference. They all looked perfect after they were frosted. Thank you so much for this recipe. I can't wait to make it again!

Sugar Coated Pecans

Reviewed: Jan. 31, 2010
Everyone LOVED these! I used 2 egg whites with 1 tbsp. water and 1 tsp. vanilla and I used a whole tsp. of cinnamon, but will increase the amount of cinnamon next time because we barely noticed it. I also did keep them in the oven an extra 5 minutes probably due to the extra egg white. Yummy!

Honey Whole Wheat Bread

Reviewed: Jan. 21, 2010
Sorry, didn't like this one. Suprised at all the wonderful reviews. It really didn't have much taste at all. Definitely needs more salt. I did increase the honey to 1/4 cup after reading the reviews, but even that didn't help in the flavor department. It was really lacking something. I prefer the other honey whole wheat bread on this site.

Cherry Hazelnut Biscotti

Reviewed: Jan. 21, 2010
Excellent recipe! Great flavor and texture. The recipe is perfect as is, however I only had pecans on hand so I toasted them instead of the hazelnuts. I also reduced the sugar to 1 cup only because I don't like anything overly sweet. 1 cup was plenty sweet for us. And I used dried organic cherries. Baking time was right on. These were nice and crunchy, but not dry in the least. Thanks for the recipe!

Taco Lasagna

Reviewed: Jan. 14, 2010
SUPER!! This was very good. I eliminated the chilil powder and the cayenne because my son doesn't like hot foods. The salsa and the taco seasoning added just enough heat for him. I also only added 1 pkg. of taco seasoning and that was plenty. I didn't have any green onions so I just chopped up some sweet onion and used that. When I was about halfway through essembling the casserole, I realized that I forgot to sautee the garlic so I just through it in raw and it was fine (probably healthier). I think next time I would add a little more sour cream and decrease the corn tortillas by about 3 or so. Other than that it was a quick to essemble very tasty dinner. Thank you Crystal for the recipe.

Raspberry-Walnut Shortbread

Reviewed: Dec. 22, 2009
Excellent! I mixed up the shortbread ingredients in my processor then baked it for 20 min. The final baking need an extra 2-3 minutes. And I did add a little extra jam. The shortbread was perfect! Not at all crumbly or dry. After they cooled they cut into sqaures easily without any crumbling and they were a beautiful addition to the cookie tray. I will definitely make these again. Thanks for the recipe!

Sweet-Sour Red Cabbage

Reviewed: Oct. 19, 2009
Very good! I did reduce both sugars to 1/3 cup and I still thought that it was a little too sweet. I would reduce the sugar even more next time. I substituted applesauce because I didn't have an apple. I increased the bacon to 6 slices and next time I would increase it even more. I also shredded my red cabbage in my food processor which I would not do again. The cabbage was MUCH too small. I prefer bigger chunks of shredded cabbage that you can only get from hand chopping it.
