I was blessed to have a Mom who let me experiment in the kitchen. The first dinner I made was chilli for a Girl Scout bagde. My Mom and I were also involved with 4-H and spent about 10 years with the group.
I have been married to my husband, Mike, for 23 years and we have 2 boys-20 and 18. I have also been blessed to have been a stay at home mom for all 23 years.
I play the piano at our church, love to work in my yard and I crochet snowflakes. We also have a Beagle named Dixie.
My favorite things to cook
One of my favorite things to bake is cinnamon swirl bread.
It's an egg bread recipe with powdered sugar icing. My recipe makes two loaves. One to give away and one for my family. Sometimes we make French toast for dinner using the "spin 'round and 'round" bread. That's what my youngest, now 18, used to call it (and still does)
My favorite family cooking traditions
Every year for Easter, I make a lamb cake using my Grandma's cake mold.
It's covered in coconut with raisin eyes and a red jellybean nose.
It sits in a bed of green coconut "grass" dotted with jellybeans.
I also make candy cane cookies for Christmas. Almond flavored butter cookie, red and white dough twisted to look like a candy cane.
My Grandma's recipies are the best!
She used real butter and I really think the secret ingredient was the simple fact that she loved to cook.
My cooking triumphs
Anytime there are no leftovers, I feel triumphant-especially at a pot luck dinner.
My cooking tragedies
A few years ago at a family reunion, I made a broccoli salad with raisins and sunflower seeds. When I stabbed a fork full I noticed little tiny bugs in the broccoli. I didn't say a word and no one ever knew. But now when I give out the recipe I say that "bugs are optional."
