About this Cook
I have 5 kids aged 10, 12, 15 and 3 year old twins. Therefore, easy and fast, but still healthy and kid friendly is what I like in a recipe. I bought Community Shared Agriculture (CSA)shares in 2011 and plan to again this year so am adding more organic, sustainable foods to our diets. I avoid artificial and overprocessed foods.
My favorite things to cook
I like baking and am good with pie crust and quick breads. I never did get the hang of homemade bread, but now there's machines for that. I like using tofu because it's cheap and fast, also fresh pasta, fresh herbs, pesto, Italian, Indian foods, and Mediterranean eg hummus. I love the Moosewood cookbook and my slow cooker.
My favorite family cooking traditions
We always do turkey at Christmas and usually at Thanksgiving. I make lots of sweets around Christmas time and have favorites such as banana gumdrop cake and Christmas shortbreads that I like to make annually.
My cooking triumphs
Lemon blueberry pound cake. Tandoori tofu, curry with potato and cauliflower. Tarragon mushroom steak for hubby after watching M. Smith make it on TV. Yesterday's buttermilk pancakes - I had to make a second batch and they all disappeared, too. Pesto, hummus and baba ganouj. Letting the world know you can microwave corn with the husk on, you don't have to boil all the flavour out of it.
My cooking tragedies
a low fat chocolate cake. It tasted low fat, and was kinda rubbery. Cakes need a little fat, not just buttermilk and egg whites, if my kids are going to eat them.

Tangy Honey Glazed Ham
this was really tasty. I used the left over glaze to make a sauce as well.

Barbequed Steelhead Trout
I used the butter mixture (substituting olive oil because I had more) to marinate the fish for an hour or so and that worked as well. The bbq was a nice touch.

Seafood Chowder
Everyone loved this. I used frozen raw shrimp, not peeled, the canned clams and some haddock and there was lots of seafood flavour. I like how everything is cookd together to maintain nutrients instead of draining them away in boiling water.
