I have always loved to cook. When I was little and my mom would say "Who wants to help me with dinner?" I'd be the only one there! I recently completed a home study course in cooking. I really enjoyed it, and I would recommend it to anyone who doesn't have a schedule that would permit regular class attendance. I enjoy sharing my baked goods with family and friends. I've even sent some things across the country! I like to volunteer as well.
My favorite things to cook
I love to bake all things, but especially yeast bread. For years I had a sourdough starter going, but I stopped using it after a while for lack of time. I'm thinking of getting it started again, so if anyone has a good starter recipe, please pass it on. I also like to cook things in my Crock Pot and then freeze the meals for later. I live alone, so that saves on my food bill.
My favorite family cooking traditions
There are several heirloom recipes I just love. They're all from my great-grandmother, and my mom has specifically informed me that I can't share them! My favorite is our family recipe for Puffed Rice Candy. Most of the recipes available online contain molasses, but we don't use it in ours.
My cooking triumphs
I mastered yeast breads in one lesson with my mom; she taught me almost everything I know about cooking now.
My cooking tragedies
One time a friend gave me some frozen grapes from his grandmother's Concord grapevine, and I found a recipe for grape pie in an old cookbook from the 1940s my mom gave me. I forgot that Concord grapes have seeds! I made the whole pie, cut a slice, and CRUNCH! Luckily, it wasn't really meant for anyone. I was just experimenting.
