A bit too rich for us. Still delicious, though.

Washabinaros Chili

Reviewed: Mar. 1, 2009
Just ok for me. It was really good chili, but I'm torn on this recipe because of the multitude of ingredients. Honestly, the wasabi goes undetected. I know of many chili recipes with FAR fewer ingredients (and cheaper ones, at that!) that are just as good, if not better, than this one. But it's not a bad chili.

Greek Penne and Chicken

Reviewed: Mar. 1, 2009
Yum! And easy! I made some changes though: used whole wheat penne rigate, used olive oil instead of butter, used a can of barely drained diced tomatoes instead of chopped fresh tomato, threw in a little fresh spinach at the end, and I think I upped the lemon juice a bit. I also used chopped rotisserie chicken meat, which was really delicious here. Try it! It makes the meal so much quicker.

Kay's Spaghetti and Lasagna Sauce

Reviewed: Mar. 1, 2009
Um, no. Sorry, but I did NOT like this at all. And it's not just me.. the 2 guys I live with who will eat anything didn't really care for it either. I took another reviewer's advice and let it simmer in the slow cooker for about 6 hours. Maybe that was the problem, but I highly doubt it. My boyfriend said it tasted like chili. I'm not so sure about that.. but it definitely didn't taste like any Italian red sauce I've ever had. Not worth the effort of chopping 4 onions! I'll stick to my basic crushed tomatoes/sauteed garlic/ground beef recipe. Maybe simple is best in this application.

Salisbury Steak

Reviewed: Mar. 1, 2009
Yummy! I used the steak from this recipe and the gravy from "scrumptious salisbury steak with mushroom gravy" from this site. Did have a bit of a problem with the patties falling apart, though. I think I used beef with too much fat and the patties almost ended up steaming in the juices that came out while browning. Next time I'll definitely use ground sirloin (what I always use, but they were out at the store.) or maybe even ground buffalo. Really tasty!!

Perfect Sesame Chicken

Reviewed: Mar. 1, 2009
Oh yes. OH YES!!!! I've been craving Chinese take-out for a few weeks now, but I hate the fat/sodium content of it.. not to mention the price (at least $30 for the 3 of us!!) This is delicious. Totally hit the spot. Used 3 T. whole wheat flour and 1 T. cornstarch in the batter. Also, ended up marinating the chicken for more like an hour, although I'm not sure the soy sauce/sesame oil/sherry makes much of a difference in the batter. Next time I'll probably just use a soy sauce/water mixture instead to cut costs even more.. not that this is expensive! Fried in peanut oil. If your oil is the right temp (365-370), your food absorbs very little oil. I used Splenda in the sauce, and cut back by a couple of teaspoons. Also, I upped the vinegar a bit. I used Sriracha for the chile paste, and next time I'll probably use 1 1/2-2 t. because my guys like hot food. Served this w/brown rice (Alton Brown's baked brown rice recipe.. try it!) and the Broccoli with Garlic Butter and Cashews from this site. Wonderful!!!!!!

Belle's Hamburger Buns

Reviewed: Feb. 18, 2009
These were ok. I used whole wheat flour and made the dough in the bread machine. I added just a tad more yeast because of all the reviews claiming these are really dense. After I'd shaped them, I put them aside to rise for 20 minutes per the recipe. Nothing happened. So I left them. For like 3 HOURS. They didn't rise much. Definitely didn't "double" in size. Also, they were really small for burger buns. Next time I will probably try to get 8 or 9 buns instead of 12. I don't know what to do about denseness.. they tasted really good though. Just not the texture of storebought, which I guess isn't necessarily a bad thing. :) Thanks for posting!

Whole Wheat Honey Bread

Reviewed: Feb. 17, 2009
Awesome! I can't believe I haven't rated this yet. I make this ALL the time, it's my mom's all-time favorite. My family only eats whole grains, and it's hard to find a really hearty, tasty whole wheat bread in the supermarket. With a recipe this easy, who wants store-bought bread?!? :]

Italian Bread Bowls

I agree that these bake up a bit flat.. also, I think the serving size is off a bit. As written, each bowl is pretty darn small. I haven't found a better recipe yet, though.

Spinach Chicken Parmesan

Really good. I add some spices to amp up the flavor, which I do with most recipes anyway. Just season to taste and you'll be fine. I doubled the spinach/sauce to serve over whole wheat spaghetti.

Broccoli with Garlic Butter and Cashews

Reviewed: Feb. 17, 2009
I accidentally added 2x the brown sugar.. but it was still heavenly. I also left out the cashews since my 1 year old doesn't eat nuts yet. SOOO good! (the guys in my house didn't know green veggies could taste so yummy!)
