My husband and I are n00b vegetarian cooks. (I'm a lactose-intolerant vegetarian, which I guess makes me sometimes-vegan.) Recently I've been concerned with using fresh and local foods, which means no more microwave nonsense. (Well, maybe just a little...)
My favorite things to cook
New things from the local farm share!
My favorite family cooking traditions
One year my husband (then boyfriend) was warming Christmas chestnuts in a microwave. I asked why he poked holes in them, and he said because they would explode. I asked if he'd ever tried it, and he said no--so we blew one up in the microwave. We've done it every Christmas since.
My cooking triumphs
For a friend's party, I managed to make mini muffins, cookies, and scones all on my own--without burning a single thing!
My cooking tragedies
When I was a kid, I wanted to make a birthday cake for my mom as a surprise. I started on the batter but then realized I didn't have any vegetable oil (well, didn't know "canola" was a vegetable), so I secretly disposed of the evidence--down the toilet, as the batter was too thick to go down the sink. Now I always make sure I have the necessary ingredients before starting a project!
