German Lebkuchen

Reviewed: Dec. 19, 2013
I lived in Germany for 3 years and really miss good Lebkuchen from the Christmas Market, especially the one in Heidelberg. I Just tried this recipe and it's WAY better than I was expecting. Has the same texture I remember and the flavor is not too spicy but mellow. I used white sugar instead of brown (figuring why bother using brown with so much molasses). I also divided the recipe and made half of it with an additional cup of ground almonds and a tsp of almond extract just to see the difference. Both ways were perfect and I will be gifting these to my friends as well as adding them to my "must haves" for Christmas. Yes the dough is sticky but if you roll them into balls and flatten them (greased hands help), and use parchment paper on your cookie sheets, then they make the cutest little circles and bake in about 10 minutes at 375F. (I didn't even bother to chill, just used my cookie scoop aka tiny ice cream scoop on the soft dough then rolled in my hands and used plastic wrap to press on top into rounds to keep my hands clean).

Amariette Cookies

Reviewed: Jan. 20, 2011
Fabulous. I made a half batch and I didn't bother to beat the egg whites - just stirred everything together with a rubber spatula and scooped onto a parchment lined cookie sheet. It took about 20 minutes to bake to perfection. I also added some vanilla extract and didn't bother to do the almond on top but I might next time. Tastes like marzipan!

Maryland Crab Soup

Reviewed: Jul. 16, 2006
I did the photo for this soup. I used green beans and petite and regular diced tomatoes instead of the lima beans and stewed tomatoes. Watch the salt level with beef broth (I used cubes and it was a bit salty) and season to taste with Old Bay. Simmer longer for better flavor. This is very similar to the Old Bay recipe listed as well. Being from Maryland and now living elsewhere, this brought me back to home!

Very easy and tastes great! I prefer the cooked version with eggs but this is nearly as good and much faster and easier!

Gingerbread Men Cookies

Reviewed: Dec. 22, 2013
Exactly what I was looking for. The taste and texture are great and the dough is SO easy to work with. After making 8 batches of sugar cookies it was so nice to move to this dough which rolled and sliced so easily. I am an expert baker and I really love this dough! You can up the spice if you are looking for something super spice-laden, but this one is great for kids. A tip for molasses: spray the measuring cup with cooking spray and the molasses just slides right out!

Chocolate Pecan Pie IV

Reviewed: Nov. 23, 2007
This is a great tasting dessert. Be aware that it is not super sweet like most pecan pies, and that it is more like a European style dessert. Also, I found that the filling didn't fill the dish as much as I would have liked, so you might want to do 1 1/2 recipes or something to make more filling. The filling for me baked into a nice layer-look with the pecans and chocolate toward the top and the syrupy-gel layer under that. Altogether a wonderful dessert, that suited us well since we like less sweet desserts. It felt like something from Germany!

Bread Machine Challah I

Reviewed: Feb. 17, 2011
Soft, delicious and so easy! I made sure my milk was warm when adding to the machine, but otherwise just followed the recipe! I will be making this again and again. Great plain, with butter, or in French toast.

Sweet Dinner Rolls

Reviewed: Oct. 7, 2011
Have made these many times now and they work great just as listed in the recipe. To save time I make one big circle and use a pizza cutter to cut into 16 wedges, then roll each one (stretching the edges). FABULOUS!

Raspberry Almond Tart

Reviewed: Jan. 23, 2012
EXCELLENT! Looks AND tastes wonderful! A few pointers: 1. DEFINITELY cut back on the baking time to 35-40 minutes 2. Make the dough in the Food Processor (it made cutting in the butter very easy straight from the fridge, and I pulsed in the egg too, until it was sticky). 3. I skipped the frosting and dusted with powdered sugar 4. Added some almond and vanilla extract to the dough with the egg.
