French Pastry Pie Crust

Reviewed: Sep. 3, 2009
Used this crust for a peach-blueberry pie, and it was fabulous. I used butter for 1/2 the fat. It got rave reviews from my friends who shared it with me.

Slow Cooker Beef Stew IV

Reviewed: Sep. 3, 2009
I made as directed and it was great, but only after I added a couple of tablespoons of seasoning to it. As prepared, it was quite bland.

Finnish Pulla

Reviewed: Aug. 31, 2009
I've tried a few recipes for Pulla, and this is the closest to the heaven my Finnish grandmother used to make. Like her, I glaze my loaves with 1/4 c water and 1/4 c sugar boiled for a couple of minutes, and top with coarse sugar. She used to make pulla doughnuts, deep fried and tossed with sugar in a bag. I haven't tried this because I know I will eat at least 23! As per others, lower the temperature as the sugar in the loaves burns easily. I use a scant tablespoon of ground cardamom or crushed cardamom seeds.

Zippy Rice Pilaf

Good idea but the cumin completely overwhelmed the dish. Will make again using another seasoning.

Peppered Bacon and Tomato Linguine

Reviewed: Jul. 22, 2009
Incredibly good and easy, too! Made as listed but only used 1/2 the linguine and it was lots for 3 people. I couldn't find peppered bacon so used regular bacon and sprinkled it liberally with fresh ground pepper after it was cooked and drained. Will make again and again.

Maple Cookies

Reviewed: Jul. 17, 2009
Delicious as written. Mine were nicely maple flavoured, but I use amber (very dark) maple syrup from a local producer for baking as it has a much stronger taste than the grocery store stuff.

Thai Peanut Chicken

Reviewed: Jun. 18, 2009
Sauce was bland when made as stated. I added 1/3 brown sugar and a teaspoon or two of sesame oil. As per other reviews, I made enough rice and chicken for the three of us, and left the rest of the quanities the same. Pretty good when played with a bit. A good starting place for a great chicken recipe.

Marinated Pork Roast

Reviewed: Jun. 2, 2009
Made the recipe as is and marinated 8 hours. The flavour was subtle and divine. Next time I will marinate overnight for more intense flavour, but that is just me.

Extreme Chocolate Cake

Reviewed: Jun. 2, 2009
Cake was outstanding! Made 4 8" layers and baked 20 minutes. As per other reviews I made the cake the night before. I used this frosting and it was good but maybe a little sweet. I make a better buttercream from an old family recipe.

Made a double batch with no change except adding 1 t cinnamon and a dash of nutmeg. They were so good you don't miss the fat at all. Will make again and again experimenting with adding raisins, chocolate chips, etc.

Not what I was expecting. Tasted good but very bland and required doctoring before I served it. Will likely not make again.
