Byrdhouse Mushroom Barley Pilaf

Reviewed: Mar. 23, 2011
Wow!! I had never made barley before in anything but soup and this really transformed barley from a background player to a real star for me! This had such a delicious earthiness to it that my husband and I adored. It reheated the next day beautifully and this will become a staple for me. It called for Pearl Barley, and I'm not sure if that is what I used or not. I used bulk organic barley from Whole Foods, and it took a little longer to cook than the recipe stated. Also, I wouldn't substitute the fresh parsley for dried in this since it added a touch of fresh and bright to an otherwise brown and earthy dish.

Best Cream Of Broccoli Soup

Reviewed: Mar. 23, 2011
This was just ok for me. I liked that it was simple and filled with tons of veggies but it just wasn't something that I am going to crave. I used skim milk and I wonder if it would have been better with half cream/half milk or whole milk.

This is delicious and super hearty! I serve this with some fresh bread and it is a fabulous dinner and even better leftover for lunch.

Slow Cooker Beef Stew I

Reviewed: Nov. 23, 2010
Delicious and super easy!! I put my beef in the Crock Pot still frozen, omitted the bay leaf, did half the beef and double the veggies, and used a little bit more chicken stock than what it called for and this turned fabulous!! The flavor was wonderful and coming home from work and smelling this was the perfect way to end my day. It literally took me under 10 minutes in the morning to make this and then once I got home I popped a few frozen dinner rolls in the oven and dinner was finished! I can't recommend this recipe enough.

Sun-Dried Tomato Dip

Reviewed: Nov. 6, 2010
WOW!! This was really an outstanding dip that was a huge hit with everyone at the party. No one could belive how simple this was since it tasted so special. I followed the recipe except for two minor changes, I used garlic powder since I agree that raw garlic can be a little overpowering and I used sun-dried tomatoes that weren't packed in oil They were just the ones that are dried and in a bag and they were fabulous! I also used dried basil instead of fresh. I love that I have everything to make this wonderful dip in the house and I can whip it up at a moments notice. I sliced french bread, topped it with a little olive oil and sea salt, then toasted it in the oven for a few minutes. We tried it with pita chips and that was great too, but I think veggies would be perfect. I am going to spread it on crostini and sprinkle some fresh basil on top for Christmas to accentuate the red and green.

Italian Sausage Soup

Reviewed: Oct. 27, 2010
This soup turned out just OK for me and I followed the directions exactly. It was fine, but I won't be making it again. It didn't seem to really come together as a cohesive dish it seemed more like individual parts all in a pot together.

Polish Sausage with Red Cabbage

Reviewed: Sep. 21, 2010
This was absolutely delicious and really cost effective...my favorite combination! The only changes that I made are that I added about 1/2 cup of water after the cornstarch and brown sugar mixture because it just didn't look like there was enough liquid. Also, I skipped the first step where you poured the boiling water over the cabbage since it just seemed like a pain and I didn't want to wash those extra dishes ;) Since you have the cabbage covered for most of the cooking time it sort of steams itself and my cabbage was perfectly soft by the end. I will be making this again!

Jalapeno Corn Bread

Reviewed: Jan. 22, 2010
This is a really delicious side dish for soups. chilis, and stews. I used fresh jalapenos, at least double the amount called for, and it came out of the oven filled with flavor but not a ton of heat. I am a terrible baker and this has turned out perfectly for me several times.

Turkey Brine

Reviewed: Jan. 22, 2010
This certainly made a difference in how delicious the turkey was. We made our own vegetable broth without any salt to keep down the cost of this and it worked out great. We brined the turkey in the kitchen sink plugged overnight. This way there was very little cleanup the next morning you just unplug the drain and you are done!

Black Bean Vegetable Soup

Reviewed: Jan. 22, 2010
This one was just ok for me. I certainly didn't dislike it but I don't think that I will be making it again. It tasted like a canned soup to me, I think it was from just opening the cans and dumping it in. The only change I made was to not puree the beans. If you are looking for something super quick and easy this wouldn't be a bad choice if you had everything in the house, but I wouldn't go out of your way to make this.

Slow Cooker Reuben Dip

Reviewed: Aug. 4, 2009
Wow! People were literally scraping the bowl to get the last of this dip! I served it with the square mini-rye and it was amazing. I used a little more thousand island dressing to keep it moist. My husband has already requested this as an addition to his weekly football tailgating menu for this fall.

Best Football Dip Ever

Reviewed: Aug. 4, 2009
I used leftover taco meat and this was a big hit. I didn't give it 5 stars because it just didn't look great, but it is definitely a football dip made for men.

Hot Corn Dip

Reviewed: Aug. 4, 2009
I really liked the taste of this dip and I followed the directions exactly. However, my guests that I served it to didn't find the look of it very appealing so it didn't really get eaten. I wouldn't choose to make this again since no one else liked the look of it.

Slow Cooker Lancaster County Pork and Sauerkraut

Reviewed: Aug. 4, 2009
Wow! This is an after work lifesaver. I followed the recipe exactly and it only took me 3 minutes before work to throw it together in the crockpot and it is ready when I get home. I can't emphasize enough how these simple ingredients go together to make a wonderful flavor and super tender meat.

Ugly Dip

Reviewed: Aug. 4, 2009
This tasted pretty good but the name says it all, it is pretty darn ugly! Since it really doesn't look very appetizing not a lot of people tried it at my party so I had a ton left over. With all of the wonderful dips out there I would skip this one and make a dip that tastes AND looks delicious!

Fried Green Tomatoes

Reviewed: Aug. 4, 2009
Oh my goodness! I have had fried green tomatoes a few times in restaurants and after seeing some beautiful green tomatoes at the farmers market I was inspired to try to make them myself. This recipe couldn't have been any simpler and yeilded the most delicious results!! I didn't have any saltines so I used oyster crackers that I ran through the food processor to get an even consistency. Also, I added a little bit of vegetable oil to my butter since it started to burn. Once I added the oil it went perfectly. My husband and I devoured these dipped in ranch dressing and I can't wait to serve them the next time we entertain! Thank you so much for the wonderful recipe.

Egg-Yolk Sponge Cake

Reviewed: Jun. 10, 2009
I made it exactly how it called for, really I had a bunch of egg yolks leftover from making angel food cake and I didn't want to waste them so I gave this a try. All of my guests agreed that this was just "OK" and no one went back for seconds.

Unbelievable Grilled Garlic Bread

Really just OK. I made it exactly how the recipe states, I actually thought it tasted more like a 3 1/2 stars but none of the people I served it to really mentioned it and no one went back for seconds.
