Easy Slow Cooker Sweet and Sour Pork Chops

Reviewed: Sep. 10, 2014
WOW. This recipe is a keeper and going into our regular rotation. Better Half LOVED these chops - they were tender, juice and delicious. He took one bite and said, "WOW." Took another bite and said, "This sauce would be great on ribs too - this is wonderful!" So we'll try it on ribs soon. I followed the recipe except for adding about a tablespoon (maybe two) of Shiracha sauce. We like things with a bit of bite to them and can't wait to have these again. Thank you Bonnie D for a truly delightful pork recipe!

Baked Salmon II

Reviewed: Apr. 28, 2014
Excellent marinade that beautifully enhances the flavor of salmon. One of those "Doh! Why didn't I think of that?!?" sort of recipes. I followed it exactly - so easy, "fast food" at home, and Better Half (who claims to hate fish) loved it. This is going into our standard rotation of meals. I served it with a baked sweet potato and bacon-onion braised green beans. Delicious!

Caramel Snack Mix

Reviewed: Dec. 20, 2013
Wow. This is one awesome recipe! I made some to give away as Christmas treats and Better Half was SO upset that I didn't save any for us. He promptly went out and bought the ingredients for our own batch. It's that good. It turned out perfectly, but I did have to work very hard to get it out of the baking pan after it cooled. I think I should've kept stirring it until it was cool enough to take out. I'll be reading the other reviews to see how others avoided that problem. Thanks for this super recipe!

Cornbread I

Reviewed: Jan. 27, 2013
THIS is cornbread. Perfect recipe. I like my cornbread to be a bit sweet so I add a couple tablespoons of sugar, but that's just a personal preference. This recipe is great for those on gluten-free diets.

Pico de Gallo

Reviewed: Jan. 25, 2013
Only 3 stars for this one as there's not enough pepper (jalapeno) and the cumin & lime juice are totally unneeded - ESPECIALLY the cumin.

Chef John's Chili Chocolate Cookies

Reviewed: Dec. 10, 2012
OMG - These cookies are WONDERFUL! I've pinned them on Pinterest, posted them on Facebook and am giving out batches in my annual cookie offerings. I've rated them "PG-13" because small humans may not appreciate the way these wonderful cookies bite back, but I promise it's just a little nip - just enough to let you know there's some pepper in there somewhere. I followed the recipe exactly and they all came out perfectly. The hardest part was making them uniform in size and shape, but I was more than happy to eat the "misshapen" cookies ... I'll be make another batch before the 2012 holiday season is over! YUMMMMM!

Chef John's Buttermilk Fried Chicken

Reviewed: Aug. 6, 2012
This was VERY good fried chicken - I rarely take the time to fry chicken any more, but made this as a special request for a granddarling's birthday. I omitted the cayenne because of all the children, and this was still outstanding. Everyone LOVED it and I'll be making this again!

Beef Spinach Hot Dish

Reviewed: Jan. 18, 2012
I had reservations when I pulled this out of the oven, but my husband LOVED it. He declared it a keeper and asked that I put it in the regular "dinner rotation". Thanks for posting this! (I did have to improvise as we had no mushrooms; only had fresh spinach so I wilted it with bacon & garlic first; used Cajun seasoning instead of oregano; only had Mexican blend cheese so used that. Still, the original recipe was a great foundation from which to work.)

Slow Cooker Spicy Black-Eyed Peas

Reviewed: Jan. 4, 2012
I had high hopes for this recipe since it was so highly rated. Followed the recipe exactly, but unfortunately, no one in our family liked it. We just don't like black-eyed peas no matter how hard we try, I guess. This recipe sounded really really good, and is probably outstanding if you like those nasty black-eyed pea. :)

New Mexico Green Chile Stew

Reviewed: Oct. 21, 2011
This is very tasty as written, but having grown up in NM, agree it's not quite authentic. Stick with pork, don't waste beef tenderloin in this, replace the cumin with chile powder or ancho chile powder. Cumin has NO place in authentic NM food. The masa adds a unique flavor that wheat flour cannot duplicate; don't make that substitution. Most of all, enjoy this tasty NM dish!

Dutch Apple Pie with Oatmeal Streusel

Reviewed: Sep. 30, 2011
I made this as written and it was pretty good; just not great. I had to cook it twice as long as the recipe called for in order to get the apples soft enough to eat. The topping seemed a little mushy, not what I expected.

Mock Mincemeat Pie

Reviewed: Sep. 30, 2011
This recipe is perfect as written -- an exact replica of the mincemeat pie my mom used to make. I didn't think anyone else in the family would like it, but it was the first pie to go at our last get-together. LOVE it!

Flat Iron, Grilled

Reviewed: Sep. 9, 2011
Wow! My hubby took one bite into this steak and went berzerk -- he declared it the BEST fajita meat he'd ever eated. It was *that* good. The only variation I made to the recipe was to decrease the brown sugar by half. Other than that, the only thing I did differently was to "grill" it in the oven @ 400 for about 20 minutes on a panini grill, rather than cooking it outside. Although this recipe is not designated a "fajita" recipe, we found the flatiron steak with this marinade worked perfectly for that. Thanks for this -- we highly recommend it!

Buttermilk Pound Cake I

Reviewed: May 6, 2011
This is one great, easy recipe! I followed the recipe ingredients with only one exception: I used 1/2 cup butter and 1/2 cup shortening (butter flavored) because it just isn't pound cake without the butter. I used this recipe to make cupcakes with what I had on hand, and they're WONDERFUL. Not too sweet, a slight lemon-vanilla flavor (without adding any vanilla), and the perfect base for my lemon buttercream icing. These were the hit of the cupcake table at our store's weekend sale/open house. NOTE: With the baking powder/soda/buttermilk combo these really rose. Fill cupcake liners only 1/2 full for perfectly sized cupcakes.

Dutch Apple Pie

Reviewed: Nov. 28, 2010
FINALLY! A nearly-perfect applie pie! This was the dessert the family fought over this Thanksgiving. I made it exactly as the recipe directed, and we all LOVED it. I will, however, change a couple of things next time I make it: I'll use a regular pie crust on the bottom to cut down on the "sweetness factor", and will add a tsp of cinnamon to the cornstarch mixture before adding to the apples. But the recipe as written is FABULOUS!

Marshmallow Popcorn Balls

Reviewed: Nov. 11, 2010
These were AWESOME -- quick, easy, and very tasty. I made them for a Hallowe'en party and added red & yellow food coloring to make them orange. They were a HIT. So much easier than the traditional method with corn syrup, etc. Thanks for posting this!

Avocado Shrimp Ceviche-Estillo Sarita

Reviewed: Aug. 17, 2010
This ceviche was so EASY, and tasted GREAT! I didn't have any Worchestershire sauce, so I left that and the ketchup out; we didn't miss it at all. I also added ~ 1/2 tsp fresh minced garlic. Next time I'll throw in one or two minced serranos instead of using the hot pepper sauce. GREAT recipe (even though I changed it somewhat) -- thanks!
