I moved to Canada from England in 2003 and definitely wouldn't move back! I work in a university as a research assistant and am also studying part-time for a PhD in Medical Physics. I'm always looking for new recipes to try but ones that don't take forever!
My favorite things to cook
Curry, baking. I like to tinker with recipes too and even make up my own from what we have in the cupboards. Don't worry - I don't put weird ingredients together like marmite and strawberries!!
My favorite family cooking traditions
We still celebrate Bonfire Night on 5th November so we HAVE to have treacle toffee (my daughter insists on it!)
My cooking triumphs
I was married to a squaddie at one time and made a meal that mimicked a regimental dinner for some friends. It took me all day to do and we had to deck out the basement as the house we had in Germany wasn't big enough for all the stuff we needed! It was a great evening but so much work!! By the way, I made deep fried cheese bites for an appetiser, boeuf en croute for the main and double chocolate cheesecake for dessert.
My cooking tragedies
There have been one or two!! If you don't try how will you know?? My 11-year old daughter and I recently made some biscuits (cookies) called 'sticky blobs'. It was an English recipe and, as we live in Canada, the flour is different. I didn't have any self raising so we used plain flour and I meant to put in baking powder. I put in bicarbonate of soda instead and too much of it! The result? FISH-tasting cookies!!! If you need bicarb in a flour based recipe - just use a PINCH!! Needless to say, the garbage bin got fed!!
