Aunt Joyce's Chocolate Cake

Reviewed: Aug. 2, 2014
Sorry, the chocolate cake was lacking the rich chocolate taste. In fact, it tasted almost rubbery. I'm not too sure what went wrong. But I won't be trying this recipe again.

Dark Chocolate Cake I

Reviewed: Mar. 13, 2008
A real chocolatey and dense cake. I made them into muffins and yielded about 20. I added a vanilla frosting to the cake. But it tastes just as well plain. This is a delightfully easy recipe to follow.

Chocolate Crinkles II

Reviewed: Mar. 13, 2008
This cookies are simply awesome! My mum's friends couldn't stop praising them! On a side note: Be sure to refrigerate the dough for 45 min. Then use a spoon to scoop the dough into a bowl of confectioners' sugar. Once it's in the sugar, it's easier to roll them into balls. Otherwise, I followed this delightful recipe to a T. Overall, a wonderfully chocolatey cookie that has a beautiful presentation.

Peanut Butter Cupcakes

Reviewed: Dec. 18, 2007
It's simply a divine cupcake! I used chunky peanut butter and half butter, half olive oil. I feel that the recipe needs more peanut butter as the taste was rather subtle. On the other hand, I would reduce the amount of milk to maybe just slightly over 1 cup as the taste was a little strong. But the milk flavour gave the cupcakes a really nice dimension in terms of taste. All in all, a recipe that I would make again and again! In fact, I'm giving my former tuition teachers these delights for Christmas this year!

Scottish Oat Scones

Reviewed: Dec. 7, 2007
I don't know what went wrong but the scones tasted dry and horrid. The top was browned but the when I took it out of the oven, everything fell into a dry, crumbly mess. My guess was that there was too much oats. Anyhow, I won't be using this recipe again.

Roasted Garlic Cauliflower

Reviewed: Dec. 7, 2007
Oh, this is super easy to make. My mom loved it and my dad thinks the strong garlic flavour really suits the dish. I left out the cheese but it was still fantastic. So maybe next time, I'll do a portion with cheese and a portion without just to taste the difference. This is a really quick and easy dish to whip up especially on a lazy evening when I don't feel like using the stove top. And by the way, I cooked the cauliflower with aluminium foil cover for the first half of the time and uncovered it for the second half. After cooking, I switched off the oven and left the dish in there until dinner. It was still warm and was absolutely delicious!

Jay's Signature Pizza Crust

Reviewed: Dec. 7, 2007
It's a nice pizza crust and pretty simple instructions that are easy to follow. I made into two rectangular pizzas that are about A4-size each. But the crust was still quite thick so I think I'll divide it into three the next time. The kneading takes quite a bit of work but it totally worth it and definitely better than frozen crusts.

Apple Coleslaw

Reviewed: Nov. 20, 2007
This coleslaw is really tasty. I sort of blanched the vegetables a while before mixing with the sauce. I substituted apple cider vinegar for the white vinegar and it gave the dish an interesting twist. I left the skin on the apple and sliced it instead of shredding as it allows me to taste the apple. I had no problem using low-fat mayonnaise but I made sure to dissolve the sugar completely in the vinegar before adding other ingredients. This helps to eliminate the lumps of sugar if you mix everything all at once. I did not add the pineapple juice nor the salt as I felt the coleslaw was flavourful enough. Thanks for the recipe!

Chicken Garlic Pizza

Reviewed: Nov. 20, 2007
I'm reviewing the pizza base sauce/spread part of the recipe. It smells and tastes really fantastic. I would suggest doubling the spread for one large size pizza. It really reminds me of garlic bread and I definitely prefer this spread over the usual tomato-based pizza sauces.

Honey Wheat Cookies

Reviewed: Aug. 31, 2007
Firstly, I used chunky peanut butter and the cookies turned out fine. My friends were pleasantly surprised that there was no sugar in the cookies. The cookies turned out pretty nice. It's a great healthy alternative to other peanut butter cookies! It's nothing ground-breaking but it's a nice chewy comfort cookie for a peanut-fanatic like me.

Banana Banana Bread

Reviewed: Jun. 27, 2007
The bread is simply delicious! I baked them as muffins for 25+ minutes and they turned out really banana-ey! My family loved the banana flavour. I doubled the recipe and yielded 36 muffins. I did three different types, one with brown sugar sprinkled on top, one with raisins and one with chocolate chips. The raisins ones were fantastic as it complemented the banana flavour very well. This is definitely a keeper!

Robbi's M&M Cookies

Reviewed: Jun. 9, 2007
I'm not sure what went wrong; I followed the recipe exactly except I pressed the M&M's onto the dough balls instead of mixing them into the dough. The temperature was too high and the M&M's cracked and the chocolate burnt. When I tried the second batch without the M&M's, the cookies were way too sweet for my family and my liking. Two stars for a crispy cookie with a hint of buttery taste.

Best Chocolate Chip Cookies

Reviewed: May 29, 2007
This is the first time I'm baking chocolate chip cookies and I'm glad I chose such a winner! I omitted the walnuts and added much more chocolate chips. Other than that, I pretty much followed the recipe all the way through. The cookies tasted simply delicious straight from the oven. Plus, the smell emitted while the cookies were baking was heavenly! After cooling, the cookies tasted just as great. The next day, the cookies became much crispier but nonetheless chewy in the middle. I kept them in the fridge. When eaten cold, the cookies were crispy while they taste much chewier and tastier after leaving at room temperature for a while. Overall, an A* recipe! Many thanks!

Joey's Peanut Butter Cookies

Reviewed: May 29, 2007
It wasn't as good as I'd hoped it'll be. The batter was way too oily. Furthermore, the peanut butter flavour was a little lacking. The cookies spread out a lot in the oven while baking. The cookies turned out really crumbly. However, despite a rather disappointing first try at baking peanut butter cookies, I still give it 3 stars for the convenience of the ingredients and how much better it tasted after it's been cooled in the fridge. I'll keep trying!

Maple Salmon

Reviewed: Dec. 27, 2006
Firstly, my family really liked this salmon recipe. The marinate gave the fish a really nice glaze. But the next time, I would probably let it sit in the marinate for even longer as the taste didn't quite get into the insides of the salmon. Nonetheless, great recipe! =)

Perfect Baked Potato

Reviewed: Dec. 27, 2006
These are the best baked potatoes I've ever eaten! 90 minutes and the potatoes were perfect! My family loved it. Although 90 minutes was quite a stretch but I believe that it makes the potatoes just brilliant. Thanks for such a great recipe!

Baked Cherry Tomatoes with Garlic

Reviewed: Dec. 27, 2006
I'm sorry this wasn't a hit with my family. My dad, who loves tomatoes, complained that they were too mushy. I think about 10 minutes would have been just nice. My sister didn't like the combination of the taste of tomatoes and garlic. Personally, I thought it was so-so but I probably wouldn't make it again. Sorry.
