Mom of 3, with a home-based business, I used to cook more elaborately than I have time for now. I took over my mom's kitchen at age 9, since she hates to cook. But she loves food and taught me how to follow recipes, so I had all the tools I needed to make cooking my favorite responsibility in my home. I have always been a free-spirit in the kitchen, but as my own children are beginning to find their way around the kitchen, I am wanting to record some favorite dishes so that they can re-create them in their own homes in the future.
My favorite things to cook
I pride myself in using a wide variety of local organically grown vegetables and fruits in season, in dishes appealing to my whole family. I love baking desserts, especially pies, though I have to confess I always buy the pie crusts so I can concentrate on the fillings.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Christmas cookie making with both my parents: dozens of batches of Toll-house, paper-thin sand-tarts, my Grannie's soft sugar cakes... it's an event that spans several days with many children assisting.
My cooking triumphs
My chocolate mousse: sometimes I run into old friends who remember enjoying it 20 years ago!
My cooking tragedies
My brother brought to dinner a very serious girlfriend when I was 16, and I wanted to impress her and honor her Russian heritage with a traditional Russian salmon dish. I had no fresh dill, so used dill seeds, then overcooked it. She married him anyway, but no one in my family has forgotten it!
