Chef John's Caramel Chicken

Reviewed: Oct. 19, 2012
4 1/2 Stars- but I'll round up! Seriously one of the best Asian Chicken recipes I've ever made. The chicken was a perfect combination of sweet and spicy, the 1/2 star I took off was because I found the recipe a bit too salty. I'm sure this will probably vary depending on the brands of soy/fish sauce you use. I would start light on both then add if needed. I made half a recipe for my boyfriend and I with a side of sesame green beans and brown rice. I was worried it wouldn't be enough food as I only had 3 chicken thighs, but it was perfect, if not too much food. I had no troubles with the liquid ratio, but I did have a big pan with not much meat (and a gas stove). I would tend to think that maybe the people who are having trouble may be overcrowding the pan. All in all this is a wow-worthy recipe, definitely suitable for company. I'll be making this again!

Bran Flax Muffins

Reviewed: Dec. 1, 2011
I added some chopped dark chocolate, subbed the raisins for a mixture of cranberries and blueberries, added some unsweetened coconut, and for the nuts had a mixture of hazelnuts, almonds, and macadamia. SO SO SO good! I think you can do a lot with this recipe!

Almond Sherbet

I froze the chilled mixture, it froze to a smoothie like consistency. The flavour is similar to condensed milk but sweeter and with a hint of almond. A gorgeous drink, the taste-tester loved it! Thank you!

Omigosh, SO good! Crisp, chewy, peanut buttery, delicious! I rolled in sugar as well, just for a little extra texture.

Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies I

This is a lovely cookie. It has a great texture. The only thing that's missing is a little flavor that the butter would give. I think I'll try half and half next time. Thanks for the recipe!

Oatmeal Banana Nut Bread

Wonderful recipe, I really enjoyed the texture. Good flavor too! I used 3 bananas (about 1 1/2 cups) and otherwise kept it the same. Really tasty!

Chocolate Chip Banana Muffins

Great recipe! I got a whole pan of regular muffins and 1/2 pan mini muffins. I couldn't stop eating them! Simple and yummy!. Edit 7/7/11 I made these with the topping from "Banana Crumb Muffins" and added some peanut butter chips. To. Die. For.

Creamy Au Gratin Potatoes

These were wonderfully good. I made "as-is" with one substitution: Jack Cheese! I also grated a little fresh nutmeg in. It was really tasty and creamy! Thanks for the recipe!

Overnight Pancakes

Reviewed: Mar. 20, 2011
Great recipe. The pancakes are slightly yeasty flavored but in a pleasant way. Very convenient to make! I added a little extra sugar, 1 tsp of vanilla and a dash of cinnamon, but I do that to nearly every pancake recipe just because I like those flavors. Thank you!

Strawberry Coffee Cake

Reviewed: Mar. 18, 2011
Wow the reviews weren't kidding, this was amazing! One change I made was to use 1/4 cup sour cream & 1/4 cup milk (I had to use up the sour cream and I know lots of coffee cake recipes use sour cream) Otherwise I may have used a little more strawberries than called for. I did have a bit of problems getting the topping to brown up. It's pretty pale still. Fresh out of the oven it was amazing- gooey but amazing. This morning out of the fridge it was firmer and tasty. It's wonderful! Kind of like a strawberry shortcake and coffee cake mixed.

Chocolate Drop Cookies II

Reviewed: Mar. 16, 2011
These cookies are truly delicious and very rich. Great with a glass of milk! I made one major change: Used butter. I also had to add more liquid to the icing. The icing is so creamy and tasty! I think I'll use it again! My only complaint is the cooking time- mine were undercooked, and you really can't tell because of the color of the cookie if they're cooked or not. The end result was a bit soft- like they fall apart when handled. Although this could be because of the butter? I didn't have any troubles icing them, found it quite easy. All in all a great tasting cookie. Thank you!

I made this last night with "Greek Souzoukaklia" (from this site). It was the perfect compliment to the meat! I did have to make some changes- I didn't have anchovies,a nd I played with the fresh herbs a bit. It was wonderful!

Greek Souzoukaklia

Reviewed: Mar. 14, 2011
Man oh man this was sure some TASTY stuff. First off, I changed one ingredient: for the raisins I used Craisins. We're not big on raisins in meat dishes. I ALMOST left the craisins out but I'm sure glad I didn't. This wonderful meat mixture has a different flavor all-round, sweet and savory with interesting underlying spices. My BF said I MUST make these for our next BBQ. I served it with "Green Goddess Dip" (from here) without the anchovies, and "Mushroom Rice Pilaf" from here as well. What a wonderful meal! Only thing I was missing was a nice salad.

Meatball Nirvana

Reviewed: Mar. 8, 2011
I made these last night and they were amazing. "Mmmmm aahh these meatballs are deeeelicious" my boyfriend says. I did leave out the parmesan, because I didn't have any. I did a mix of spices for the Italian Seasoning, and used my homemade wheat breadcrumbs. I didn't bake them but did the technique of dropping them into hot spaghetti sauce and cooking them in the sauce. They were amazingly good. Thank you lovestohost this will be my standard meatball recipe!

Chinese Roast Chicken with Gravy

Reviewed: Mar. 4, 2011
I used two chicken quarters and reduced the soy sauce & sesame oil since it wasn't a whole chicken. The whole house smelled wonderful and the flavor of the chicken was great. The gravy itself did turn out quite salty (it IS soy sauce after all!) but I treated it kind of like an au jus just dipping a little at a time. All in all a great and simple flavorful recipe! Thank you.

Butter Dip Breadsticks

Reviewed: Mar. 1, 2011
These are a wonderful recipe for breadsticks- especially if you're in a hurry. I made these with "Friendship Soup Mix" (made the soup) and they were wonderful. I was a bit worried how I would knead them due to the fact that the dough was very sticky. I ended up covering the surface liberally, and the top of the dough before I started kneading. I still had some sticky fingers, but kept at it (adding flour as needed) and it came together beautifully. I ended up twisting them as well. They taste wonderful and are the perfect (inexpensive) accompaniment to the soup!
