I was born in small town Alberta, Canada where I was raised on good ol' meat and potatoes (gotta love Alberta beef!). Good food has always been a part of my life. Growing up, my mom, grandma, and I enjoyed cooking together, and I have many fond memories of cooking and baking with them. My mom always makes great comfort food, and always made our family the dishes we requested- even when she didn't like them! She hates lasagne, but somehow managed to make the best lasagne ever.
My favorite things to cook
I love the challenge of making things I never thought I could, and perfecting them. I make a mean tzatziki, Asian corn chowder, fleur de sel caramels, and more.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Growing up, my grandparents had a farm. In harvest time, the men would spend all day out in the fields, and us girls would be in the kitchen, cooking up lunch, dinner, and snacks. We would bring the prepared food out to the field and eat it out there. I loved eating in that field while watching the sunset!
My cooking triumphs
I've had a few! My first Thanksgiving cooking for 15 people in 2007 was a great success! Making homemade potstickers with a hot chili sauce. It was very time consuming- but was so delicious. Also, cooking for a staff party at our house for 25 people. I stressed because I wanted everything to be perfect- and I was so relieved when everyone loved it!
My cooking tragedies
The biscuits! I made some biscuits once, and I think the baking powder was bad. They were tough and tasted like chewing on flour. Shawn said they tasted like playdough! Its now a running joke in our house...
