Stuffed Cabbage Rolls

Reviewed: Apr. 12, 2012
I've had amazing cabbage rolls at a local Polish restaurant and decided to try my hands at making them. Wasn't really feeling this recipe, though, sorry. It was very bland. The stuffing needed a lot more seasoning. A 15oz can of tomato sauce+water from the cabbage during the simmer made plenty of sauce for all the rolls.

Sarah's Rice Pilaf

I made it with a bit of Pam and omitted the butter. Some thyme and cayenne pepper made the dish more interesting. A solid staple! I'll be making this over and over again.

Gomen Wat

Reviewed: Mar. 21, 2011
I followed the recipe to a tee, but did NOT care for the end result at all. It was way too gingery and the spice combination tasted a little off. It's too bad; I really enjoy the gomen wat at my favourite local Ethiopian restaurant.

Fried Cabbage with Bacon, Onion, and Garlic

I generally despise cabbage, but I could NOT stop nibbling at this! This goes amazingly well with corned beef. I also added red pepper flakes as well. Definitely a keeper!

Stuffed Eggplant with Shrimp and Basil

Reviewed: Aug. 23, 2010
Spectacular! I generally dislike eggplant, but I will be putting this into my regular rotation. Like many reviewers mentioned, I minced and sauteed half an onion and used half as much breadcrumbs (1/2 cup). I also used dried basil and added a pinch of crushed red pepper and plenty of onion powder. I''ve started dinner by myself while I started writing this (before my husband is home!) just because it's so good and I can't stop eating it! YUM!

Adobo Chicken with Ginger

Reviewed: Aug. 5, 2010
I had ten drumsticks that I saved from a ruined Malaysian curry (bleck!), and had an hour to make something edible with ingredients I had on hand before the boyfriend came home. This is some of the most delicious, easiest meal that I made! The vinegar smelled a little too pungent while it was cooking, but the balance was just perfect in the end product, and all the vinegar tenderized the meat perfectly! YUM. Definitely will be keeping this in my rotation!

Kimchi Jun (Kimchi Pancake) and Dipping Sauce

Reviewed: Feb. 7, 2010
Excellent recipe! Some tips to make it better: Do not incorporate the egg into the batter. Instead, crack and beat an egg all at once. Once you have the pancake spread out in the oil, gently pour the egg on top. Also, two teaspoons of cornstarch really crispens up the pancake. Be sure not to lay on the batter too thick -- make it super thin to start with, as it will puff up a bit, even without the addition of baking powder. DELICIOUS!

Eggplant with Garlic Sauce

Reviewed: Jan. 25, 2010
I hate to comment poorly on someone else's dish that they worked hard to develop, I didn't care for this dish at all. For me, it turned out too mushy and had an unpleasant taste, and was too sweet even with 1.5tsp sugar. Even my housemates that eat anything and everything picked at this dish. I will not be making this again.

Broccoli and Tortellini Salad

Reviewed: Jan. 5, 2010
I felt that this was too oniony. I brought it to a potluck and it barely got touched. Also, don't freak out if the dressing seems too sweet when you first whip it up -- it'll mellow out as the savouriness of the bacon permeates through. This is why I feel that it's essential to let the salad sit overnight before serving!

This recipe is PERFECT as is. The only change I made was throwing in two large cans of whole peeled tomato, and breaking them up into bits with a wooden spoon.

Exquisite Pizza Sauce

Reviewed: Nov. 4, 2009
I had no expectations from this, as I've only used it since I forgot to buy sauce and only had paste on hand. Boy was I wrong! We used about a teaspoon of worcestershire sauce in place of the anchovy paste, to great success. I will never buy pizza sauce again!

Cream Cheese Frosting II

EXCELLENT. It's unnecessary to change a THING! I'm usually the one to gather suggestions from user reviews and modify recipes, but I'm so glad that I followed this recipe to the T! My boyfriend had to hide the frosting from me so I wouldn't eat it all before our red velvet cupcakes (made a recipe from this website) cooled enough for frosting!

Quiche Lorraine I

Reviewed: Oct. 16, 2009
This was just ok -- rather bland. Also, I didn't appreciate the flavour of the sweetness of my store-bought pie crust with the savouriness of the filling. I used 4 small eggs and 1 cup of milk, and this made the perfect amount to fill the deep dish pie crust nicely, with no spillovers. I prebaked the crust at 350 for 10 minutes, covered with aluminum foil. 45 minutes at 375 degrees after filling the pie, as others suggested, yielded the perfect consistency.

Shrimp Scampi V

Reviewed: Oct. 6, 2009
Quite nice! Do go ahead and use the full cup of wine, but when you're deglazing the pan, you're to cook the wine until it has halved in volume, while scraping the bottom of the pan to loosen browned bits of garlic and shrimp. I also used about a teaspoon of salt and a teaspoon of red pepper flakes.

Vegetable Couscous

I had my doubts about this recipe, but I was pleasantly surprised! I definitely added more hot sauce and salt to adjust for my tastes, and doubled the veggies to make the recipe healthier. It's so delicious that I'm eating the leftovers for breakfast at my desk at lunch :-)

Love Mussels

Reviewed: Jul. 15, 2009
This was all right -- nothing particularly wrong with the recipe, but nothing spectacular either. Although I'd say, a dash of cream or some cheese might have gave the dish an ooomph to make it five stars. Also, I felt that 1 tbsp of Italian seasoning was WAY too overwhelming. The juices from the mussels did give the leftover tomato sauce a delicious savory flavour.

Spinach Lentil Soup

Reviewed: Mar. 30, 2009
Excellent! Great base flavour and great nutrition, but it did need some serious seasoning. I used about 1.5-2tsp of salt, a bay leaf, and 1/8 tsps each of cumin and turmeric. Like the other reviews recommended, I switched the stock-water quantities. I also used an entire half link of the kielbasa to treat myself after a good workout :-)
