Cabbage with Hot Sauce

Reviewed: Dec. 30, 2013
Good basic recipe, nothing exciting, but good. Used sriracha for the hot sauce. A little sesame oil was good with it too.

Lentils and Rice with Fried Onions (Mujadarrah)

Reviewed: Feb. 22, 2013
I made this without the rice, and it was simple & delicious, even without yogurt. I think yogurt would be good if you spiced this up - it's pretty much spice-less, which is a little odd, but still surprisingly tasty. A lot of the positive reviews seem to recommend adding some spices, which is not what this recipe calls for.

Bacon Turnip Mash

Reviewed: Feb. 22, 2013
Delicious! I used purple-topped turnips and added a few small potatoes because I had them on hand. The only problem I had with the recipe was that it didn't specify how long to boil the turnips, which is kind of critical information. It took mine about 15-20 minutes (they were small, and I didn't chop them up further). I also cut back on the bacon amount, and it still had a great bacon flavor.

Cornish Game Hens with Garlic and Rosemary

Reviewed: Dec. 30, 2012
Roasting time of 50 minutes total was nowhere near long enough - and I was only doing half the recipe (two hens). Skin was getting black by the end, but meat was raw in the middle, and garlic cloves were still crunchy. I would try an hour and a half, and cover for some of it to prevent burning. After cooking for extra time, though, it was very tasty. I added more broth, seasoning, and flour to the drippings to make gravy.

Our Favorite Olive Beef

Reviewed: Dec. 12, 2012
So easy and delicious! I added a few cloves of garlic. I substituted diced tomatoes + italian seasoning for stewed tomatoes, because that's what I had on hand. I didn't add any of the olive liquid, since other reviewers said it was too salty. There was still plenty of olive flavor without being too salty, and it still made lots of yummy sauce. The olives play a big role, so get good ones!

Garlic Kale

Delicious, easy way to fix kale. I add a little salt & freshly ground black pepper.

Elote Blanco with Verdolagas, Lime Juice and Chiles

Reviewed: Oct. 17, 2012
Needed way more than 10-15 minutes and lacked flavor. With longer cooking time and some adobo, was pretty good.

20 minutes @ 250F was perfect. Don't oversalt because they shrink!

I also added onions, a little chili powder, and seitan - delicious and easy!

Margarita Chicken CrockPot Recipe

Reviewed: Jul. 2, 2011
Much too sweet. I would try again with only a tiny bit of honey, and lime juice instead of margarita mix. You can thicken the juices a little and make a nice gravy.

Party Popcorn

Reviewed: Mar. 14, 2010
Tasty, but the mixture doesn't spread evenly on the popcorn. Maybe adding more butter would help distribute it.

Cream-Braised Brussels Sprouts

Reviewed: Jan. 31, 2010
Really good! Be sure to use heavy cream and not a substitute - evaporated milk curdled immediately, but cream was smooth and wonderful.

Peanut Butter Popcorn

Reviewed: Jan. 11, 2010
So good! It's very sweet; I think you could cut down on the sugar & it would still be good. I added quite a bit of salt as I was stirring it together, which helped bring out the peanut flavor.

Eggnog Russian

Reviewed: Jan. 1, 2009
Delicious! We used vodka instead of rum, like in a real White Russian, and that worked well.

Seasoned Oyster Crackers

Reviewed: Jan. 1, 2009
It works best if you drizzle the seasoned oil over the crackers while stirring them - otherwise the oil won't get distributed well.

Baked Pesto Chicken

Reviewed: Sep. 29, 2008
Delicious! I used homemade pesto, and a spoonful of canned petite diced tomatoes on each piece of chicken, because I didn't have any fresh. Like the other reviewers, I marinated the chicken for a while. I think it would have been even better if it marinated longer - next time, I'll try an hour. I'll be making this for guests - it's so easy, and makes a nice presentation.

Graham Cracker Pudding Pie

Reviewed: Sep. 21, 2008
Quite good, and VERY easy! I thought the crackers would get really mushy, but they didn't - they got soft, but kept their shape and look very nice in layers when you cut into the pie. I used 2 packages of instant pudding, like the other reviewers, and since they were smaller, it fit in a regular pie dish just fine. I did 3 or 4 layers of crackers, and sprinkled some crumbs on top to make it pretty.

Easiest Eggplant

Reviewed: Apr. 23, 2008
Very good! I agree with the other reviewers that the breadcrumbs could use some more flavor (next time I will try garlic powder, salt & pepper, Italian seasoning...). I didn't bother peeling the eggplant, so it was even easier and it came out just fine.

Marie-Claude's Orange Cake

Reviewed: Feb. 23, 2008
Good flavor, but the juice didn't soak all the way into the cake, so the bottom was soggy. I used a 9x9 square pan, and it took about 40 minutes.

Orange Juice Cake

Reviewed: Feb. 23, 2008
Good flavor, but texture was not pleasant. The orange juice mixture didn't soak through the cake, only about half-way (and I let it sit for a long time!). So the bottom half of the cake was soggy and greasy from the butter.
