Pumpkin Spice Bread

Reviewed: Nov. 13, 2011
I followed the recipe almost exactly as written except using 2 cups of white sugar with 1 cup of brown as suggested by others. I guess I should have taken more suggestions because I thought it could have used a little something extra. The bread was very moist, but I think adding nuts and/or dried fruit would have added a different texture. I also will add a dash more of each spice. If I make this again, I will definitely make the changes. I would love to give this as Christmas gifts!

Italian Lasagna

Reviewed: Jun. 18, 2011
I was pleased with this recipe. I took the advise of other reviewers and added an extra can of tomato sauce. I also used some crushed garlic and increased the herbs in the sauce. The bacon is an absolute must! You don't really taste the pieces in the finished product, but it makes the sauce so much better. I had 8 cups of mozzarella and ended up using all of it! This definitely makes way more than what can fit into a regular pan. Be prepared to use 2 or a huge roasting pan. The final result was pretty good after the modifications. I think it would have been way too dry with the original sauce proportions as I almost ran out even with the extra can. I do think that there was something missing that I just couldn't put my finger on. Next time I will try parmesan instead of the provolone. Though it is a little time-consuming, I will definitely keep this recipe!

Mexican Cornbread Salad

Reviewed: Jan. 25, 2011
I gave this recipe 4 stars because I think that the original would be a tad too bland. I made some improvements per others' suggestions, and I was very pleased! I added a jalapeno to the cornbread, used spicy ranch dressing, and substituted a taco cheese blend for regular cheddar. Even after these changes plus adding some cumin and chile powder between the layers, I found it could be a little spicier. I will definitely make this again, but I will be more generous with my spices. Everyone raved about this at a friend's dinner, and the hostess told me this recipe was a keeper!

Tiramisu Layer Cake

Reviewed: Dec. 27, 2010
I went through many of the reviews before deciding to make this cake, and I don't know what happened. I followed the advice of others and made two coffee layers, doubled the coffee on those layers, and let them set in the pans refrigerated overnight. When I went to remove them from the pans, it was an awful mess! The cake was so soggy and mushy that they fell apart. I couldn't even use the top third layer because it literally squished to pieces. I ended up making it just the two layers, but my top piece ended up sliding off the mushy bottom. Thank goodness my family didn't really care about the presentation! As far as taste, I really didn't care for it even though some of my family liked it. I don't think adding so much coffee to the cake really made a difference as it was still a slight flavor. I think that if I followed the recipe as stated, I still wouldn't have liked it as much as other recipes on this site. I doubt I make this again.

Original Chex® Party Mix

Reviewed: Dec. 21, 2010
As is, this recipe isn't that good. The amount of spice makes the final product too bland, and microwaving doesn't bring out the toasty flavor and crunch. I had to double the spices, add a little cajun spice, and increase the butter before baking it in the oven as most other people did. Five stars with the changes!

Pumpkin Fluff Dip

Reviewed: Dec. 4, 2010
This was absolutely delish! It was so simple too! I tried it with gingersnaps, which I didn't particularly care for, so I tried cinnamon graham crackers. Much better! I will definitely make this again!

Vanilla Glaze

Reviewed: Nov. 29, 2010
I thought this was a great glaze. Along with other reviewers, I too think the milk was a typo. I used tablespoons, and the consistency was great for pouring over cake. I did add a little more vanilla because I wanted more flavor. I would definitely use this again!

Apple Cake IV

Reviewed: Nov. 25, 2010
I made this cake according to the directions except for shredding the apples and adding slightly less oil. It turned out very moist and light. I personally would have liked a little more spice to the cake, so next time I will probably add some nutmeg and extra cinnamon. Very good recipe though!

Quick Yeast Rolls

Reviewed: Nov. 24, 2010
I followed the recipe exactly, and these turned out pretty well. They were more dense than I expected-more of a muffin than a traditional roll. They tasted great and were easy to make; however, I will probably try another recipe to get the consistency I was looking for. I will probably make these again since they were so simple!

Brown Sugar Smokies

Reviewed: Nov. 24, 2010
I thought these were pretty tasty. I tried them with just a little sugar and then completely drenched, and I actually liked them without all the sugar. I personally thought that too much sugar covered the flavor of the meat. They were pretty easy to make, and I will probably make them again. Thanks for sharing!

Award Winning Peaches and Cream Pie

Reviewed: Jul. 5, 2010
I was disappointed in this recipe after I read all the rave reviews it got. I did take the advice of others by doubling the recipe and baking the crust 10 minutes before adding the peaches. I even chilled it a couple of days in advance. It didn't look appealing when it came out of the oven (cinnamon/sugar topping), so I spread real whipping cream on the top. The crust tasted doughy even though I baked it the required time. I was somewhat embarrassed that I served it at a 4th of July party even though most people said they liked it. I think they were just being nice though! I probably won't make this again.

Slow Cooker Pulled Pork

Reviewed: Mar. 3, 2010
This is one of the easiest dishes I have ever made. I followed others' suggestions and used a 6 lb. boston butt instead of the tenderloin. I seasoned my meat with what I had in the cabinet, and I used 2/3 of a 2 liter Barq's to cover the meat. After about 10 hours on low, it was falling to pieces! I added a large bottle of "Sweet Baby Ray's" sauce, some more spices, and that was it. It got rave reviews, and several people told me that it was better than what they have gotten in restaurants. I will definitely make this again.

Simple Taco Soup

Reviewed: Jan. 29, 2010
This was a good starting point for the basic recipe, but I had to modify it to suit my tastes. I substituted black beans for one of the cans of pinto beans, and I also added two more cups of water. The main thing was that it was very bland with just one pack of taco seasoning. I added a ton of chili powder and cumin for it to have any flavor. I will make this again, but I will definitely have to spice it up!

Parmesan Potatoes

Reviewed: Jul. 10, 2009
These potatoes were ok only after I added lots of extra cheese and other spices. I think that if I would have followed the recipe exactly that they would have been bland. I also found that the crust didn't stick to the potatoes very well, and I may take the advice of other reviewers and toss them in butter first before coating with the mixture.

Double Chocolate Pie

Reviewed: Jul. 9, 2009
As a true chocoholic, I found this pie to be quite tasty; however, my husband and mother thought it was a little too strong. I topped it with a meringue and used 2% milk, but I thought it set a little too soft. I don't know if anyone else had this problem, but I also noticed that the unsweetened chocolate took quite a while to melt. So long that I was afraid I would have little chocolate pieces in the pie even though I chopped it well. Despite this, I thought the taste was great, and I will probably make it again.

Braised Balsamic Chicken

Reviewed: Jan. 29, 2008
I thought this recipe was pretty good. I did take the advice of others and added some crushed garlic and reduced the balsamic vinegar. It wasn't the best chicken ever, but it still had a good flavor. I'll probably make this again.

Tomato and Garlic Pasta

Reviewed: Jan. 15, 2008
I thought this was a great recipe, and it was so simple! I had to use store Roma tomatoes, dried basil, and wheat pasta, but it still had a wonderful flavor. I will definitely make this again.

Baked Honey Mustard Chicken

Reviewed: Jan. 13, 2008
I followed the advice of others and covered my chicken when cooking, and it turned out pretty moist and tender; however, the sauce just didn't wow me. Personally, the basil flavor was a little strong, and the sauce was very thin even though I baked it in a small dish. I may make this again, but I'll probably leave out the basil.

Baked Sweet Potatoes

Reviewed: Jan. 13, 2008
Wow, what a great way to eat sweet potatoes! My family has always traditionally eaten them baked with just some butter. These were much better and had a LOT more flavor. I followed the recipe but cut them into smaller pieces as others have mentioned, and I also added some onion powder. I'm definitely making them again!

Sugar Cookie Frosting

Reviewed: Dec. 22, 2006
This frosting is very easy to work with and hardens relatively fast. I had to add a little bit more powdered sugar to make it stiffer for the decorating I was doing, but it turned out great. I will definitely continue to use this recipe for all my sugar cookies.
