My real job is working as a Trainer for new employees with a local credit union, while paying some of the bills working part time as a scuba instructor. I live with my amazing dog Penny the black Labrador who will also eat anything in her bowl- or on the counter, for that matter.
My favorite things to cook
I was a vegetarian for 16 years, before converting back to omnivore 3 years ago. I'll try anything once, but I am a much better cook than baker. I hate measuring, most of the time I just eyeball it and get away with it. I recently made my very first batch of blueberry jam, and now canning is something I'm really interested in learning.
My favorite family cooking traditions
A few holiday seasons ago, I pulled out my mother's cooking boxes and made the various newspaper clippings and faded recipe cards into new 4 by 6 cards. These included all of the recipes that she had collected over the years and what I had remembered from being a child, as well as all the special recipes from special occasions. I bought three of the binders designed to be recipe books and made copies for myself and my sister- as well as returning all of my mother's recipes to her in the original form in one of the books. I added a lot of blank cards at the back, and I hope they are filling them in as we find new keepers- hopefully my sister and I can hold on to these books for our children.
My cooking triumphs
Sushi. We eat a great deal of what we lovingly refer to as "Eugene Sushi"- I was lucky enough to have lived with a fabulous Japanese woman for three years, and she taught me a great deal about cooking. Other good stuff is anything grilled or steamed veggie dish- including curries, stir-fry, and oven roasted anything. I also make some awesome made-up salad dressings too.
My cooking tragedies
I've been known to leave chicken on the stove unattended for several HOURS. Ummm. Hockey Pucks. Also, some people have the magic baking touch, and the overall attention required to measure ingredients. I lack both of those skills- but I can make things appear from the fridge and garden and become a one-pot wonder dinner.
