Gramma's Apple Bread Pudding

Reviewed: Sep. 22, 2012
I made this on the first day of fall. I had some stale whole wheat italian bread and some fresh apples. I cut the sugar in half by substituting Splenda, and it tasted great. Also, I used the full amount of milk, but let the bread cubes absorb it for about 15 minutes before baking. Then I poured on the egg mixture and baked it. My family loved it. This was easy to throw together with ingredients I had on hand.

Flaky Food Processor Pie Crust

Reviewed: Dec. 27, 2008
Jenn, thanks so much for clearing something up for me! I have been making pie crust in the food processor for a couple of years, but it was always tough, never flaky because of the amount of water it took to form the ball while in the processor. Your advice is better than Martha's and the barefoot lady! My crust was flaky!!! A little hard to work with, but definitely flaky! :)

Autumn Cheesecake

Reviewed: Nov. 27, 2008
I made this for Thanksgiving and got many compliments. Like others said, I also added another cream cheese, egg, and 1/2 tsp. vanilla. I also used cinnamon graham crackers. The flavor was good, but this is what I will do next time: either I will double the cream cheese or use another cheesecake recipe to get a nice tall cheesecake. Also I will partially cook the apples in the microwave as suggested because the apples, which I sliced very thin, were somewhat rubbery. I'm going to try again because the combination is nice and the flavor & presentation are great for the fall.

Pumpkin Pancakes

Reviewed: Oct. 26, 2008
These are just like pancakes from a pancake house, very fluffy. I was worried they might be mushy in the middle, so I was careful to spread them out a little in the pan. Great flavor, just the right amount of pumpkin for my husband and me.

The Best Lemon Bars

Reviewed: Aug. 25, 2008
Love these! A simple recipe with simple ingredients, and a wonderful result. Many people commented on the crust being too thick. I thought it was perfect as is. I did add the zest of one of the lemons because many people commented on increasing the flavor. I was extremely happy with the result. Just want to note that it does stick on the edge, so when cool trim that part off first before slicing so pieces are nice and neat. I will make these again and again.

Family-Style French Toast

Reviewed: May 11, 2008
Another reviewer said this was great to make for a crowd, so I did for Mother's Day. It turned out great! I made it once before, and I prefer if the French bread is a day old. Also, careful not to soak too long or it can be soggy. (Next time I'll try dipping as others suggested.) I also added a pinch of nutmeg. It tastes awesome and looks beautiful on a platter. This recipe is a keeper!!!

Chocolate Mint Candies Cookies

Fantastic cookies! I made them exactly as stated and they were quite easy. Used parchment paper instead of greasing the sheet. Will make again and again.

Gluehwein

Reviewed: Dec. 25, 2007
I wanted something different this Christmas, so I gave this a try. I really enjoyed it. I used orange juice as others suggested, and was worried about it being too sweet, but it was lovely. I used an inexspensive French wine and sipped it while preparing Christmas dinner. Sehr gut! Danke, Else!

Gingerbread Cookies I

Reviewed: Dec. 16, 2007
Very good gingerbread cookie. Not the sweetest, I eat mine plain, but most people would prefer with icing. Absolutely needs and extra cup of flour and an hour in the fridge. Then they rolled out very easily on a floured board. I was worried with so much extra flour and increased the spices a bit. Cookies held their shape nicely. Will make again.

German Spaetzle Dumplings

Reviewed: Oct. 7, 2007
I used the grater as others suggested. My dough seemed too liquid, so I had to a couple tablespoons of flour. The result was funny little dumplings that everyone loved! It was perfect with my sauerbraten and red cabbage. Will make again and look into a spaetzle maker!!

Honey Mustard Dressing

Reviewed: Aug. 20, 2007
I was very pleased with the results. I needed dressing in a pinch, was craving honey mustard, and had no mayo. I liked it even better the next day on an apple-walnut green salad.

Roasted Pears with Caramel Sauce

Reviewed: Aug. 19, 2007
I can't rave enough about how simple and elegant this dessert is. Fantastic! As others suggested, turn down the temperature to 375 or the caramel will start to burn. I also used the melon baller to scoop out the pits and look more professional. The sour cream was elegant, and I don't even like sour cream! Try it! I will make this again with a tiny hint of nutmeg.

Chicken Noodle Casserole

Reviewed: Aug. 19, 2007
My family enjoyed this. It isn't fancy or spicy, but good old comfort food that reminds me of casseroles my mom made. To save clean up, I did all the sauteing and baking in one Dutch oven. I didn't have savory, so I used fresh thyme. I will definitely make again.

Chewy Oatmeal Cherry Toffee Crisps

Reviewed: Aug. 18, 2007
This is a favorite cookie in my house. They are crisp on the outside, and slightly chewy in the center. I add 1/4 whole wheat flour to the recipe to address the speading problem and add a nutty flavor. This also allows me to skip refrigeration first, to save time. Like others, I also use craisins unless it is a holiday.

Rich and Creamy Tomato Basil Soup

Reviewed: Aug. 16, 2007
I was so disappointed after reading the rave reviews. I followed the recipe exactly, and ended up with pink soup, not resembling tomato at all. I had to add a can of tomato paste, which thickened it up and made it more "tomatoey." I don't think "4 tomatoes" is enough. Maybe 4 cups. I'm still searching for an awesome tomatoe soup.

Easy Black Bottom Cupcakes

Reviewed: Aug. 13, 2007
As someone else mentioned, I added and egg to the cream cheese mixture to make it more cheesecake like. I also made them more like a "stuffed cupcake" and made the cups 2/3 full of chocolate cake mix, with a large spoonful of cream cheese mix. Very easy to make and delicious!

Garbanzo Bean Tomato Salad

Very easy salad to toss together and something different on the table. Basil wasn't ready in the garden yet, so I used fresh parsley. Loved it.
