I grew up (?) in NYC, in the Bronx. Although my grandfather was a butcher, we always had well done meat. When I moved to Manhattan, I found another world of food. There's no turning back!
My favorite things to cook
Right now, I'm vacationing in Colorado and on a Mexican kick, trying to perfect Carne Adovada. Back home, in Florida, I do a lot of outside grilling, smoking and slow cooking. Favorites are Cuban Pork, Pulled Pork, Brisket, steaks (first smoked over wood, then flash grilled on infra-red. Wine is a big part of it; anyone can buy a good $50 wine. The trick is to find a good $10 wine.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My mother was so proud of herself when she first made lasagna. It wasn't difficult, but no one in my family had ever done anything with so many ingredients in one dish; it was a venture into the unknown that turned out to be a family favorite.
My cooking triumphs
Every time I have good friends over to share a meal.
My cooking tragedies
I was preparing some chops at a friend's house for her kids while she was away. Intending to spread a little olive oil on them before pan frying, I used the oil from a decanter that was on the kitchen counter. Only after the chops were done did we realize that what was in the decanter was liquid soap.
