My favorite family cooking traditions
My dad's the cook and he makes the most delicious salmon you'll ever take, sauteed in olive oil and herbs de provences. My mom's the baker and makes divine, fluffy cupcakes to put Magnolia to shame.
My cooking triumphs
Anytime I create something that makes my stoic roommate or my friends who are "on a diet" enthusiastic is a triumph!
My cooking tragedies
I can't make my Dad's salmon for some reason! Always turns out a pale imitation. And back when I lived in the dorms, I set off the smoke alarms cooking scallops for some guy. Gahhhh

Janet's Rich Banana Bread
Like everyone else said- MASH THE BANANAS!!! Other than that, this worked out great. I used to make banana bread with yogurt instead of sour cream, but I didn't really taste the difference. For extra points, wait til the bananas get brown before trying this, and bake with a shallow pan of water in the oven, preferably on the rack directly below. I brought this to my class and everyone loved it- maybe the professor will give me extra points on the final exam?

Hummingbird Cake
This recipe worked out quite well, and was very easy to make. That said, all of you who commented before comparing this to banana bread are 100% spot-on. This is an elevated, super-moist, fluffy and sweet banana bread with cream cheese frosting- not that there's anything wrong with that! I will feel less guilty eating it for breakfast tomorrow. The recipe as written does not call for cinnamon and/or nutmeg, so I added a pinch of each. People with more distinguished tastebuds than I can decide whether that helps. Also I used vegetable oil instead of canola, which I think made it slightly crispy on the outside (YUM!) and baked it in the oven next to a shallow dish full of water while listening to David Bowie's Lodger, which I think was a positive influence on the dish.

Sam's Famous Carrot Cake
This was AMAZING! I was worried that the all the different add-ins would give too many flavors, but it was PERFECT! The pineapple especially made it moist and chewy even after being in the fridge all night. It looked awful when it came out of the oven, I thought it was overbaked, but I guess that's just the outer layer cause the rest is sooooooo so so so good. I will make this forever.
