About this Cook
i'm a grad student/child therapist in a clinical psychology ph.d. program, and sporadically dream about dropping out and working as a baker.
My favorite things to cook
my cooking abilities are not yet fully explored- i'm a baker at heart. i love to make cakes, pies, cookies, and bread if i have the whole day free. my absolute favorite thing to make is a cake for a birthday or special event, especially the decorating/presentation.
My favorite family cooking traditions
my mom is an amazing cook (Puerto Rican food), but hates to bake...so we balance each other out nicely.
My cooking triumphs
a chocolate layer cake that, on a whim, became a big york peppermint patty. the layer filling was mint chocolate icing with crushed andes candies; it turned out quite nice. people were licking the candles - the sign of success.
My cooking tragedies
my first layer cake, age 14. tasted good, but looked like a piece of tilty abstract modern art. ended up getting served in large chunks on the plates. argh.

Carrot Cake III
What a great, solid recipe- the cake has a wonderful moist texture, and the cream cheese frosting complements it well. I made these as cupcakes, baking at 350 degrees for 25 minutes; made good-sized 20 cupcakes. This may be my go-to carrot cake recipe from now on!

I was skeptical while making these about how they would turn out (due to the trickiness of rolling out the dough and making the individual rugelach), but the final result was extremely well-received: out of 48, I left a party with only 8 left! I replaced the raisins with mini chocolate chips to make it more dessert-like. Excellent recipe, and a new addition to my collection.

Irish Cream Chocolate Cheesecake
i've made this cheesecake twice for school events, and everyone raves about it. i did have some cracks on the top (despite using a water bath on the rack below), but covered the top with a layer of chocolate cookie crumbs, and no one noticed it- i definetely did not bring any home with me!
