About this Cook
I currently live in England, but I grew up far from here, on a farm in northeastern Ohio. My grandmother was an excellent cook, but unfortunately she passed away before I was old enough to learn her talents. My mother didn't cook at home, so everything I know has been an exercise in trial-and-error, beginning when I moved away for college and had to start feeding myself. It's been quite a journey!
My favorite things to cook
I became a vegetarian about 2 years ago, and it has definitely opened up a new world for me in the kitchen! I love making healthy and creative foods with daring new ingredients. Sauces and dressings from scratch are my favorite things to create. I enjoy bringing different cultures into my kitchen, especially Thai and Mediterranean. I also love baking cakes, muffins, cookies... you name it! I even have a new food blog at, which I am very proud of!
My favorite family cooking traditions
My family doesn't like to cook, but (luckily), my friends do. At Christmastime, my best friend and I get together and spend an entire day baking cookies of all sorts -- by the end of the day, we are absolutely exhausted... and stuffed full of cookies and tarts and homemade candies!
My cooking triumphs
My first Thanksgiving as hostess, in 2006. The menu was New England-style everything, with lots of maple, cranberry, and apple. My family usually prepares holiday meals using lots of boxed mixes - it was nice to be able to treat my family to the "real thing!"
My cooking tragedies
Every time I drop a cake layer on the floor, my heart drops right along with it!

Lemongrass Coconut Rice
This is really good, but I had to add a significant amount of salt, and I added some fresh cilantro once the rice was finished cooking. Next time I'll add extra lemongrass.

Irish Potato Farls
These were delicious! I added a little onion powder to the dough mixture - this was a BIG help! I used bacon grease to fry the second batch instead of using flour - this was also quite tasty. They were good either way, really... thanks for sharing!

Irish Soda Farls
This was so simple and delicious - and I barely mussed up the kitchen! I did not knead the dough (kneading is a bit scary and I am not very good at it), so instead I just mixed a bit longer in the mixing bowl before transferring directly to my electric griddle pan (set at 300 F). I only used a pinch of salt - will add more next time. It is great served with salted butter and honey, or with blueberry preserves.
