Zuppa Toscana

Reviewed: Feb. 7, 2011
I love this recipe. Granted, I tend to use it more as a guideline than a rule, but it's a good, solid base. What do I do different? I add some fresh kale, bump the garlic (my family loves it), use homemade chicken stock, and add a little butter (about 3 Tbsp). I never have leftovers.

Traditional Indiana Persimmon Pudding

Reviewed: Feb. 7, 2011
Okay, this is a relatively obscure recipe. That being said, I can't encourage you enough to try it. I used fresh persimmon and followed the recipe to the letter. The result? Well, my family RAVISHED the result. It's simply outstanding!

Mrs. Sigg's Snickerdoodles

Reviewed: Feb. 7, 2011
This is a great recipe. Personally, I think the real trick is to A) make sure the butter is soft (not melted) and to B) really cream the sugar and wet ingredients. I let mine go until it was nice and light and then folded the dry goods in. The resulting dough was perfectly hydrated and just barely sticky, but very easy to handle. I scooped a healthy tablespoon onto 3/4 sheet pans lined with parchment paper and baked at 400 for 11 minutes (YMMV of course). The result? A wonderful cookie with mildly crispy edges and a nice, soft interior. I do recommend using a good quality cinnamon and, if you can get your hands on it, C&H Baker's Sugar.

Amish White Bread

Reviewed: Dec. 4, 2005
It's hard to say something that hasn't already been said about this recipe. Let it suffice that I took the time to register an account on this site just to say, "Thank you!" to the recipe's author and give this five stars. I bake all of our family's bread these days and this just became our new standard. I made two loaves; regular (per the instructions) and cinnamon sugar (melted butter, cinnamon, and a little brown sugar spread on the dough before shaping). I haven't tried the cinnamon yet, but the regular loaf is absolutely perfect. If you're thinking of trying this bread let me encourage you to follow the recipe to the letter for the first time. You can adjust the sugar later if you'd like, but it's not as sweet as some reviewers would lead you to believe. This bread is a dead ringer for what mom used to make and it's an excellent example of a heartland supper table staple.
