I'm a high school senior who loves to cook! My mom loves when I'm on break because I usually volunteer to make dinner (and clean up after myself, of course). Cooking provides a wonderful break from my normal activities like school (all of which I love yet sometimes tire of).
My favorite things to cook
Quick breads (especially banana bread), yeast breads (my new favorite is Greek olive bread), and biscotti. I'm still learning, though, and I love to try new things as often as possible.
My favorite family cooking traditions
I like to prepare food with my family. I have great memories of wonderful chats with my mom as we stuff potstickers and even with my dad as he helps out in his own way (we usually ask him to cut up the dried fish that we use in our side dishes).
My cooking triumphs
I suppose every time I cook something new is a triumph. Nowadays, my dishes usually come out well, which makes my parents quite pleased after their long days at work. It's always nice to see them happy at dinner. There are few things more special than cooking a meal for the people you love.
My cooking tragedies
The first time I tried baking by myself was in middle school. I decided to try recreating a delicious cake I had made earlier in the week in my home ec class... from memory. Obviously, that was not a great idea; I think I forgot to put in baking soda. At any rate, the cake came out rock hard and inedible. It was a rather inauspicious start to my cooking career, but I got over it eventually and conquered the beast in the end.
