White Russian

Reviewed: Feb. 19, 2006
White Russian is possibly the best drink in the world. After making about two dozen I decided that the best proportion is 2 Tbsps vodka, 3 Tbsp Coffee Liqueur, 3 Tbsp cream(lightly beaten, or you can use shaker if you have one), 3 Tbsp milk + lots of ice And don't forget the straw!

Mushroom Pie

Reviewed: Feb. 12, 2006
The combination of the ingredients is fantastic! Thank you very much for the idea of how to put all my favourite things together! Next time I might try frying onion in butter first, adding 2-3 cloves of garlic and sour cream instead of cream like my Russian grandmother does. My boyfriend said the pie was immense and then ate it all, so I don’t even know if it’s better cold or not, must be equally good though

Pastry Cream

Reviewed: Feb. 12, 2006
Isn't it almost identical to custard only with a bit of flour in it? I had no problems with the consistency and my cream puffs were really good filled with it, just not my favourite taste. But really rewarding making this from scratch and very basic ingredients!

Tiny Tarts

Reviewed: May 28, 2006
They were easy to make and I really liked them. I just rolled the dough between two sheets of parchment paper and cut circles with a wine glass - no hustle this way.

Suzanne's Spinach Quiche

Reviewed: Feb. 1, 2006
Wow, my first experience with shortcrust pastry was a disaster! While prebaking, the sides collapsed (I used spring pan as it's the only one I've got) and the beans I put at the bottom to prevent it from going bubbly managed to mix with the pastry. Took an hour to fish them out. But the quiche turned out lovely! My mate who almost never has seconds is still munching it in the kitchen. I used a small brown onion instead of green onions and sautéed it in butter with 3 cloves garlic and mushrooms. I also used half yoghurt half cream and added 2 extra oz of Cheddar cheese to the top 20 minutes before the end.

Grandma Johnson's Scones

Reviewed: Feb. 1, 2006
I live in England and the first thing my boyfriend said was that these were not as 'posh' as the English ones, then he was surprised he didn't need any clotted cream or jam to eat them with, than he and his mate stopped playing their computer game and finished the whole batch. I made half of the scones with cranberries and half with cinnamon, nutmeg and chocolate chips (lovely). I also put butter in the freezer for 15 mins, gated it into the flour mixture and tried to make sure it was not fully incorporated to make the scones flaky. Thank you for the recipe

Easy Decadent Truffles

Reviewed: Feb. 21, 2006
My mates couldn’t believe I made these, they kept on asking “How?”. It also took me less than 40 mins. I wrapped the mixture in clingfilm, flattened it and placed in the freezer for about 10 minutes, then it was very easy to cut it into roughly equally sized pieces and roll, I then returned the truffles to freezer for 5 mins and coated them in almonds (very good crunchy contrast), coconut, icing sugar and cocoa. I also took smbs advice and used only 2C chocolate and icing sugar each + ab 50g good 75% chocolate and 2Tbsp cream. Very good!

Coffee Liqueur Ice Cream Pie

Reviewed: May 28, 2006
I am very proud because I made this pie with home made Coffee Liqueur and even made ice-cream myself. I used 5 ingredient ice-cream from this site, it makes exactly 2 pints, so I just added a couple of teaspoons of cocoa powder into 1 pint. It was even easier than with store bought ice-cream, as I didn't have to defrost it to blend in Coffee Liqueur. Very satisfying taste, though I would recommend using good commercially produced ice-cream for a creamier pie. And it is easy and impressive looking!

Mocha Cigars with Coffee Cream

They are such cool things to make! And not that difficult at all. My mates vere really impressed and it was the first time I saw them fighting over the last one. Great recipe!

Jean's Marinated Mushrooms

Reviewed: Dec. 16, 2005
Funtastic and extremely easy to make. My boyfriend loved these. I added less oil and more vinegar and would recommend to keep the mushrooms in the fridge for a couple of days before serving for more vinegary taste.

Mushroom Crusted Ham and Cheese Pie

Reviewed: Dec. 16, 2005
It's a lovely recipe, a bit time consuming but all the ingredients compliment each other really well and the pie tastes wonderfully. I added garlic to the mushroom crust and didn't use ham. Many compliments to Linda Miranda.

Roquefort Pear Salad

Reviewed: Apr. 23, 2006
Very tasty. We really liked the dressing (I doubled it) and even the avocado was a nice addition. My boyfriend absolutely hated candied pecans and was moodily fishing them out for 15 minutes. Nevertheless, since that time he keeps on telling me how good salads are and why don't I make this one again.

EAGLE BRAND® Mini Cheesecakes

Reviewed: Dec. 20, 2005
They are lovely, even my boyfriend and his mate loved them. I made half of them chocolate and they were very tasty also but possibly a bit less cheesecaky. And you can decorate them with chocolate curls made with potato peeler, just make sure the chocolate is slightly warm

Mocha Mudslide Brownies

Reviewed: Mar. 18, 2006
They tasted fine straight out of the oven, I added more alcohol than it called for and still they were not very boozy. The next day they consolidated into quite moist unappetising bricks though, brrr I didn't like these at all and won’t make again

Pecan Praline Cookies

Reviewed: Jun. 18, 2006
I couldn't see the point of adding lots of butter and sugar to ready made biscuits but was curious to find out why everyone seemed to like these. My boyfriend liked them, I ate a few but can't imagine making them again. They were a tiny bit soggy and you just know that it's butter oozing out of them. I don't find the idea appetising for some reason

Raspberry Cup Cakes

Reviewed: May 14, 2006
I quite liked these, but the proportions of ingredients seem to be off - next time I would try with only half a can of condensed milk and more cream cheese (150-200g). I really enjoyed the fresh raspberry taste, but think that the taste of condensed milk was overpowering

Irish Cream Macadamia Nut Pie

Reviewed: Apr. 23, 2006
Very nice. I've never even seen anything like this before and was quite surprised. Everyone was a bit dubious about trying it first, but it was gone in a day. And as the other reviewers mentioned before, the amount of filling is enough to make even more than two pies. I had filling left and made mini pies which were great.

Red Onion and Goat Cheese Tart

Reviewed: Mar. 18, 2006
It wasn't very popular at all but largely it was my fault. I made my own pastry and it turned out a bit too oily and soft and the goat cheese I used wasn't the best. But the recipe sounds fantastic and can definitely be made into a 5 star one, to taste like these little tarts Marks and Spenser sell

White Chocolate and Cranberry Cookies

Reviewed: May 14, 2006
This recipe is exactly the same as the one my American friend gave me a couple of years ago, only it uses some more interesting ingredients. It might be the easiest and, who knows, best recipe for choc chip cookies I found so far. I used only 1/4 cup white sugar with good results, as white choc is quite sweet on it's own. The combination of white chocolate and cranberries is wonderful!
