About this Cook
I am married with no children. We have always had pets. Mostly Labrador Retreivers. We live in a rural area, but have lived in suburban areas, also.
My favorite things to cook
Typically Louisian dishes: Red beans and Rice, Gumbo, Crawfish Au Gratin, Bread Pudding, Greens, Peas, Hot Water Cornbread. But also, casseroles, salads, soups, candy and cookies for the holidays
My favorite family cooking traditions
My mother used to make homemade tacos. She had to get the masa harina from my aunt in California because it was not available in Louisiana in the 1960's. In the summer, when all of the fresh vegetables ripened, we would eat fresh purple hull peas, tomatoes, squash, greens, corn, and fried chicken for lunch when we all got together for a session of picking, shelling and freezing peas and beans for the winter as well as shucking corn, cutting it from the corn, and preparing it for the freezer.
My cooking triumphs
Learning not to fry everything. I was raised on traditional Southern cooking, which is full of fats and cholesterol. I had to learn alternate ways of cooking. I almost never fry anything now.
My cooking tragedies
When I was first married, I accidentally let a chicken boil dry when I got distracted. My kitchen stank for days!

Easy Cheesy Cream of Broccoli Soup
I make a soup very similar to this one and it is really very good. I read with outrage the reviewer who gave this recipe only 2 stars because it used canned soup, frozen broccoli, and processed cheese. WHAT A SNOB! I don't know where s/he lives, but it is not always convenient to "pop" 15 to 20 miles (at the very least) to the nearest grocer for fresh whatever. This is a great soup to make with ingredients that have a long shelf life and can be kept on hand for whenever needed. Thank you for sharing.
