I'm 29, and love to be in the kitchen. It's probably my favorite room in the house.
My favorite things to cook
Soups, cakes, cookies, breads, appetizers and any traditional southern dishes.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My family needs quick and easy dishes and loves cakes and cookies. It's also become quite the joke in our family that I am going to ask for at least one gadget, gizmo or small appliance that they have never heard of. The mandolin Christmas was the funniest. My mom called my husband from a music store wanting to know when I had started taking guitar lessons and if there was a particular brand I wanted.
My cooking triumphs
Stollen. It was a tradition for the holidays with my mother-in-law when she was a child and nobody continued making it after her grandmother passed. I snuck into her recipe box and got it and started making it. That Christmas I finally impressed her.
My cooking tragedies
Anytime I try refrigerated cookie dough I burn them. That's the main reason I started doing cookies from scratch. Also, the "purple chicken" incident almost caused a divorce. My stepsons still ask us during an argument "is this a purple chicken arguement or is this over something that matters?". That was the night I learned that different wines reduce differently and local honey cooks differently that pasteurized clover honey.
