About this Cook
I'm an avian field biologist who does short-term contract work, so I move around a lot. To my non-bird-work-related friends I'm that girl that's into birds but amongst my work friends I stand out for my cooking. Sometimes my field crew lives in a field camp, sleeping in tents, and cooking all our dinners communally over a propane camping stove. However, I like the jobs best where we have a full kitchen as that greatly expands my cooking possibilities. It is easy to make friends by baking cookies to share with my coworkers. Plus I love to foster a sense of community by helping to organize communal sushi dinners and pizza nights. I really like to eat but I love to cook with others in mind. My favorite things to cook
Most of all I love to bake sweet things-- generally cookies, squares, tarts, and pies. I also love to use a lot of fresh vegetables whenever possible, so I'm a big fan of stir-fries, salads, and pasta dishes. Working in the southwestern US I learned to cook Mexican-influenced meals with ingredients such as black beans, cilantro, and avocado. I love trying new recipes, especially through Allrecipes and by signing out lots of cookbooks from the library wherever I am. I am currently going through a phase of trying out various waffle recipes for my new waffle-maker and making all sorts of smoothies.
My favorite family cooking traditions
I learned to bake by helping my mum-- one of my earliest memories is helping make chocolate chip cookies and being not strong enough to stir the dough on my own!
My cooking triumphs
I've achieved bread freedom-- I can make (very good!) bread, bagels, English muffins, hamburger buns, and tortillas from scratch, so I can avoid all the undersirable additives found in store-made breads!
My cooking tragedies
My love of baking sweet things conflicts with my desire to eat more healthily! Now that's tragic.

Applesauce Oat Muffins
I increased the cinnamon to 3/4 tsp, the applesauce to 1/4 cup. I also added 2 tbsp chopped walnuts and half of a diced apple. These were good with the additions.

Frosted Molasses Ginger Sandwich Cookies
I made some changes-- I use butter instead of margarine, and half brown sugar/half white sugar. I only needed to bake them for 6 1/2 minutes which browned the bottom but kept them soft. I added spices (ginger & cinnamon) to the dough with the flour and used a different filling the 2nd time, as the filling (without ginger) was okay but nothing special the first time. Very fun as squirrel sandwich cookies.

White Velvet Cutouts
Aside from the fact that the yield is much less than the recipe states, this is an excellent recipe. I only chilled the dough for just over an hour and that is plenty. Multiple people commented on how tasty these were. I'd much rather make these than sugar cookies.
