Jan's Pretzel Dogs

Reviewed: Jan. 1, 2012
These were really good! I wanted them to be more appetizer sized so I cut the weiners in half and wrapped them in the dough leaving only one end sticking out of the dough. The recipe made 24 half-sized pretzel dogs with no dough left over. My first batch did stick a bit and got a bit dark on the bottom (even with doubling up the baking sheets). With the second batch I put the egg wash on the rolls before putting them on the baking sheet and they didn't stick at all and the bottoms were not too dark. I will definitely make this recipe again; my teenage son asked me to make some for his school lunches!

BBQ Chicken Pizza I

Reviewed: Nov. 26, 2011
This pizza was delicious! I used a homemade pizza crust and bottled BBQ sauce. I did use smoked gouda and seasoned my chicken breasts with a little sea salt, pepper, garlic powder and oregano. I also used red bell pepper because I couldn't get the other kind. This pizza was terrific, my husband and teenged son loved it. Will definitely make again. Thanks for a great recipe!

Big Joe's Venison Steak in Chestnut Sauce

Reviewed: Dec. 13, 2010
This sauce was delicious! I made an elk roast and served this with it. The sauce was very nice and really enhanced the taste of the meat. I followed the recipe exactly with the exception that I used bottled chestnuts. My kids both enjoyed it as well Thanks for a great recipe!

Too Much Chocolate Cake

Reviewed: Dec. 6, 2010
I prepared this recipe exactly as written. I found it a quite chocolaty and a bit heavier than other cakes. My chocolate chips sank to the bottom of the bunt pan while baking so I had a thick layer of melted chocolate on the top of the cake.

My kids and I really enjoyed this recipe. It takes quite a bit of prep work but it was tasty and is a vegetarian dish. I cooked exactly as written

Blackened Tuna Steaks with Mango Salsa

Reviewed: Dec. 6, 2010
My family loves fresh tuna but we don't get it very often. This was a very tasty way to prepare fresh tuna. The salsa was zippy and went well with the tuna. The whole family really enjoyed this. Make sure to use a flipper to flip your fish in the pan rather than tongs so it doesn't fall apart. Thanks for a great recipe!

Grandma's Lemon Meringue Pie

Reviewed: Mar. 14, 2010
This pie was surprisingly easy to make! It is really not that much harder than making the boxed kind but SO much better! One tip is to make sure you aren't going to be interrupted when you are in the final stages of making the lemon filling because you really can't leave it. Delicious, thanks for the recipe!

Easy Sugar Cookies

Reviewed: Jan. 13, 2010
This was a very tasty and simple recipe. We have made it twice now. Do make sure your butter is room temperature and very soft before mixing. Also, I only baked until the tops were cracked and the edges were golden, this way they were soft and chewy rather than crunchy which is how I prefer my cookies. Thanks for the recipe!

Sugar Cookie Frosting

Reviewed: Jan. 13, 2010
This was an easy, tasty recipe. You can't taste the shortning at all. It was a good consistency for piping onto cookies with an icing bag. The only substitution I made was using rice milk in place of the regular milk because of a dairy allergy and you really couldn't tell the difference. Thanks for a great recipe!

Tropical Pork Chops

Reviewed: Aug. 25, 2009
I didn't actually taste this recipe as I'm a vegetarian but I cooked it for my carnivorous husband and kids and they all really enjoyed it. The recipe was easy to make and was something different to do with pork chops. I made the recipe exactly as submitted. I also cut the fat off the pork chops before cooking so that my sauce didn't end up greasy.

Mom's Buttermilk Pancakes

Reviewed: Aug. 25, 2009
These were excellent pancakes, my whole family liked them! I followed the recipe exactly with the exception of the buttermilk because I didn't have any so I did the milk/vinegar thing and they turned out fine. The pancakes were very light and fluffy and 1 batch of batter made ten 3 inch pancakes. This was plenty with bacon and eggs to go with them but if we were just having pancakes I would double the recipe for a family of 4. Thanks for the great recipe!

Rhubarb Strawberry Jam

Reviewed: Jan. 25, 2008
I made this recipe in the summer. I kept a few jars for myself and gave some to friends. Everyone commented on how good it was. I really enjoy it. It is quite sweet, but not too sweet for my taste. It was also very easy to make. I will definately make this again. Thanks for the great recipe!

Grandma Johnson's Scones

Reviewed: Dec. 19, 2007
This is a very tasty recipe. The consistency is a bit lighter than traditional scones, but I personally like that. The only changes I made were to use fresh, frozen cranberries instead of raisins, and I brushed the tops with milk and sprinkled with sugar before baking. My only comments are that these should be cut up into more than 12 wedges unless you like huge scones. If you want something you can cut in half to spread jam, etc. on, I would recommend using a round cookie cutter instead. Also, because I cut mine into 12 large wedges as specified, it took much longer than 15 minutes for them to bake. Thanks for this recipe! My 6 year old daughter and I enjoyed making together.

Caramel Apple Jam

Reviewed: Oct. 18, 2007
The flavour of this recipe is very nice, and is a nice change from regular jams. I did find I had to add extra liquid. I also found that, despite stirring and skimming, the fruit kept floating to the top of the jar as it was thickening, and so I had to keep turning the jars so all the fruit didn't settle at the top. I agree with the previous reviewers that it tastes more like apple pie than caramel apple, but either way, it is very tasty.

Nanaimo Bars III

Reviewed: Dec. 29, 2006
I don't usually like nanaimo bars, but these were really good! They aren't as sickeningly sweet as most. I made them for a Christmas party, and everyone enjoyed them. The only change I made was to add ground almmonds to the base as that's all the grocery store had.
