Mall Pretzels

Reviewed: Aug. 13, 2005
Yummy, but I wouldn't say these taste like the ones you get at Auntie Anne's. The ones at Auntie Anne's are much, much sweeter. Regardless, these pretzels tasted great, were soft and chewy and were a lot of fun (and easy) to make for my 7 and 5 year old kids. Even the 18 mo. old "helped" roll out the dough! The kids polished off half the batch as soon as they came out of the oven and are already asking when we can make them again. Making pretzels definitely held their attention longer than baking cookies! I give this recipe 4 stars only because I don't think they taste like Auntie Anne's, but my kids would definitely give them 5 stars or more. They liked them even better than Auntie Anne's.

Blueberry Buckle

Reviewed: Oct. 7, 2005
Very disappointed. Not sure why this gets such positive ratings. My husband and children all said not to bother making this one again. I agree! Very blah. I did substitute margarine for the shortening in the cake (the only difference between this recipe and the one on the Land O Lakes margarine box), so maybe that made some difference. I doubt it. Regardless, I won't waste my time trying it again with shortening. Sorry!

Grandma Johnson's Scones

Reviewed: Dec. 30, 2005
These are delicious!!!! Very quick and easy to make with ingredients you have on hand. I split the dough in half. Made half with semi-sweet chocolate chips. I mixed plain cinnamon in the other half of the dough and then sprinkled the tops with cinnamon/sugar before baking. My kids loved them! They are already talking about which flavors they want to make next time. Personally, I'm anxious to try lemon and blueberry! I must admit they were a bit sweeter than what I was expecting, but I'm not complaining!!! I will probably take the advice of other reviewers and make them a little smaller next time. A bit of advice from me -- don't waste your time trying to roll them out. It's much easier and faster to just pat the dough out. Now back to the kitchen -- for another...

Candy-Coated Milk Chocolate Pieces Cookies I

Reviewed: Jun. 12, 2006
I'll admit I was a little leary of using all shortening and I almost substituted butter, but I'm SO glad I DIDN'T! I followed the recipe exactly (well, I probably baked them a little less than what the recipe calls for) and these cookies were incredible!!!!They were slightly crispy on the outside and soft and chewy on the inside -- yummy!!!! They were picture-perfect -- flattened out slightly but not too much -- just right! Plus, they were so simple and quick to make with ingredients I always have on hand. Hubby and children said they were the best cookies they've ever had -- and that's a real compliment. Everyone in my family bakes alot -- most everything from scratch. This will definitely be a recipe I make time and time again. Thanks for sharing!!!!

Chicken Noodle Soup

Reviewed: Sep. 28, 2006
THE VERY BEST!!!! I've made this several times and it is always delicious. I made it last night for my parents and they couldn't stop raving. My mom is an awesome cook -- most everything is made from scratch -- and both my mom and dad said this was the BEST SOUP they've EVER had (they are in the 60s-70s). I think my dad ate four huge bowls and he asked for some to take home!!!! That is the highest compliment!! I make a few minor revisions -- I double the onion, butter, carrots, black pepper and bay leaf and add minced garlic. I also make the Boiled Chicken recipe from this site (using 4 lb. raw chicken) and use all of that chicken PLUS part of that broth instead of all water (probably 2-3 cups of the broth and 9-10 cups water). I also cook it alot longer -- a couple of hours -- before adding the noodles. I also use frozen noodles (Reames brand). These noodles are thick and hearty and really make for a delicious, homemade taste and presentation. Thanks Sherry for an awesome recipe!!! Now, I'm off to have a bowl for lunch. I'm glad I didn't give all of the leftovers to my dad to take home!!! ha ha

Chocolate Chip Mini-Muffins

Reviewed: Nov. 3, 2006
For whatever reason, these muffins had a strange smell and taste after they were baked. I couldn't detect it in the batter; it seemed to develop during the baking process. The texture was also weird. I was very careful not to overbake, but they still turned out hard and firm. I've made lots of muffins (both homemade and packaged), but I won't be making these again. I'll keep looking for a better recipe. Until I find the perfect recipe, I'll stick with the cheap packet mixes you buy in the grocery store -- they're even better than these. Sorry!

Super Swiss Steak

Reviewed: Dec. 21, 2006
Cloves? Seemed odd and I wish I had listened to my initial instinct. This ingredient does not belong in this dish. It gave the dish an odd taste and smell that was overpowering. I just couldn't get past it. I started putting the steak on plates and decided I couldn't serve it to the family if I couldn't eat it myself! Sorry!

Luscious Slush Punch

Reviewed: Jan. 1, 2007
I honestly didn't have high expectations when I decided to try this recipe. Afterall, it's just a punch, right? I was thinking what's all the hoopla and five stars rating for something as simple as a punch... Well, I was wrong. This punch is fabulous. I'd give it ten stars if I could. It was the hit of the party for both kids and adults. EVERY PERSON who tried this punch said it was awesome. There were no negative or even mediocre comments. We whizzed through a full batch in a couple of hours and everyone was asking for more. For the next party I'll double the recipe. Per the suggestion of other reviewers I decreased the sugar to 1.5 cups and it was just right. I also used sugar-free jello and diet Sprite. The results were fantastic. I also followed the advice of others and froze the mixture in two one gallon ziploc bags. I think I'll make another batch soon and freeze it in quart size bags so the kids can enjoy an occasional treat. With a recipe this good, it's a shame to save it for special occasions only. Give this recipe a try; you won't be disappointed!

Cocktail Meatballs

Reviewed: Jan. 1, 2007
I've made these twice now for large parties and followed the recipe exactly each time (for both the meatballs and the sauce). I thought the texture of the meatballs was very good -- not too hard or rubbery. I totally disagree with reviewers who claim the sauce was spicy. I didn't thing this was the case at all; in fact they were sweet and tangy. While I thought the overall dish was decent, I've never received a compliment or request for the recipe. At the end of the party there were more left in the pot than gone. Perhaps I just had too much other food. As a result, I think I'll keep looking for the perfect cocktail meatball recipe.

Raspberry and Almond Shortbread Thumbprints

Reviewed: Jan. 1, 2007
Yummmm! These tasted fabulous and looked just as pretty! I followed the recipe exactly and would recommend everyone else doing the same. If you don't like almond flavoring, try a different recipe! You're not doing justice to this recipe if you alter it in any way. The almond flavoring gives this cookie a distinct taste that makes it stand apart from most traditional holiday cookies. While I give these a five star rating because I enjoyed them so much, I have to be honest and say I didn't receive many compliments from others about their taste, although everyone did comment on how pretty they looked. Again, I think the almond flavoring is something people either like or don't like... and I definitely like it!!! Thanks for sharing!

BLT Dip

Reviewed: Jan. 1, 2007
Yummm! This is our family's new favorite party dip. It does taste just like a BLT sandwich and it's SO darn easy to make! I'm not one to take too many shortcuts because I think it compromises the end result, so I fried real bacon for this recipe. I mixed the sour cream, mayo and bacon together the night prior to the party. I would imagine this helps the bacon flavor develop. Then just an hour or so before the party, I stirred in the chopped tomatoes. I spread the dip in a fairly shallow dish and topped it with shredded lettuce just prior to serving. Afterall, a real BLT isn't a BLT without lettuce! The dip held up well and looked appetizing (unlike some dips) throughout the party -- or at least while it lasted! I received many requests for this recipe. In my book, that makes this recipe a definite keeper!

Salsa Chicken

Reviewed: Jan. 1, 2007
This tastes great and is so easy to make with ingredients I always have on hand. The perfect thing to make when you haven't given much thought to dinner but want something that tastes great. Not to mention it's healthy. Go easy on the cheese and it's a great option for anyone on Weight Watchers. This is one of the few dishes that hubby and all three (picky) kids will eat. That makes this a definite keeper.

Aussie Chicken

Reviewed: Jan. 1, 2007
Yummmmm!!! I crave this dish but rarely make it because it's way too high in fat and calories. I've never had the restaurant version but I doubt it could be any better than this. Maybe I'll splurge and make this dish this week. I can always get back on the diet next week! ha ha

Jay's Signature Pizza Crust

Reviewed: Jan. 1, 2007
Maybe it was something I did, but this recipe left me completely unimpressed. Not worth my time and effort. I made this once and the kids still refer to it as the "night mommy made the yucky homemade pizza." I'll keep calling the local pizzeria until I find a better crust recipe. Sorry!

Burrito Pie

Reviewed: Jan. 1, 2007
Yummmm! This is a family favorite -- one that mom, hubby and all three kids look forward to eating. It's also easy to make; reheats well and travels well. The taco sauce you use, both brand and heat, makes a huge difference in this dish. Mine always comes out a little different since I switch up sauces alot, but the results are always delicious. If you're serving young kids or adults who can't handle spice, try using a mild sauce and eliminating the chiles as this dish can be quite spicy (which I love!) I've made it with and without the beans and it's great either way. You really can't go wrong with this one. It's awesome! Note: Use a deep casserole where you can get at least three or four layers of tortillas. Two few layers and it's a mushy mess.

Chicken Piccata II

Reviewed: Jan. 1, 2007
UPDATE: I recently made Cook Illustrated's version just for comparison. We all agreed that this version on AllRecipes is better! I will, however, take CI's advice to cut the chicken breasts into two 1/4" thick cutlets. This made for very tender, cut with your fork, chicken! Delicious and so easy to make! A great dish to make for guests. I think this recipe is better than many versions I've had in restaurants. It's one of the few recipes that mom, hubby and all three kids will happily eat!

Brown Sugar Meatloaf

Reviewed: Jan. 1, 2007
I really enjoy this recipe and used to make it often. Instead of packing the sugar, ketchup and meat into a loaf pan, I form the meat into a loaf shape and place it in the bottom of a glass baking dish. Then I mix the brown sugar and ketchup together and pour the glaze on top of the meatloaf. Make extra glaze and serve for dipping. Unfortunately, my kids are now at a stage where they won't touch such a thing and hubby is watching his weight. As soon as this passes, I'll be making this yummy meatloaf again!

Honey Bun Cake I

Reviewed: Feb. 19, 2007
TIP: Make sure you mix BY HAND. I've made this several times and it always comes out great EXCEPT FOR THE TIME I was in a hurry, didn't read the directions and used a hand mixer. For some reason, it took an extra 20-30 minutes to bake and the texture just wasn't right. Not sure how the difference in mixing affects the finished product, but it really does! TRUST ME! So yummy and so easy. A great way to take a plain cake mix and make it extraordinary! My hubby said this was one of the best cakes he's ever had. We couldn't leave it alone. Delicious right from the oven or even better the next day -- the glaze has time to soak in and make this super moist. I followed the recipe exactly (used a Duncan Hines Butter Recipe mix because that's all I had). If you use a Bundt pan like I did make sure you grease the pan. Mine stuck and I had to piece it back together -- as a result it wasn't the best looking cake but it definitely didn't keep it from being gobbled up in record time! Some other reviewers suggested cutting the glaze in half for a Bundt cake. I used the full recipe and was glad I did. Yummy! I wish we hadn't demolished the whole thing...I could go for another piece right now.

Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Bread

Reviewed: Jul. 3, 2007
I ran across this recipe by chance. I needed to bake something to take to a function and I didn't make it to the store. My choice of baking ingredients was at an all-time low. I really didn't expect great things from this recipe -- it really didn't sound enticing to me, but I had all of the ingredients on hand. I was pleasantly surprised! I thought they were pretty good (not exceptional), but all of the kids who tasted these went nuts. Go figure! That's why I'm giving this a 5-star rating. They wolfed them down in record time and were fighting over the last few. I didn't have mini-chips so I used regular size and they worked fine. I also made mini-muffins because I was in a time crunch. I baked each batch for 15 minutes and ended up with about 8 dozen minis. While I won't be craving these anytime soon, I'm sure the kids will be asking for these again.

Unbelievable Chicken

Reviewed: Jul. 7, 2007
I would agree that this is the moistest, juiciest grilled chicken I have ever made! I've never had much luck cooking chicken breasts at home - they always end up dry. However, I thought the flavor was extremely bland/unmemorable. I actually ended up marinating this for 48 hours, so I would have thought it would have been extra flavorful. I was surprised that it wasn't. I thought the marinade was interesting and flavorful when I mixed it up, but the flavors did not carry through to the final cooked product. I'd give this a 5 star rating for juiciness but only 3 stars for taste, thus the 4 star rating. I'd be willing to try this recipe again, with some additional ground mustard and other spices to jazz up the flavor.
