About this Cook
My daughter and I have too many food sensitivities to tolerate very many boxed/forzen/canned foods, so I tend to make a lot of our meals from scratch with mostly fresh ingredients. My submitted recipes will likely be free of dairy, wheat, eggs, and many other allergens.
My favorite things to cook
Muffins, pies and cookies! Wheat-free baking can be a challenge, though. I enjoy grilling fresh veggies with just a little olive oil, & freshly ground salt & pepper.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Who wouldn't say Thanksgiving, on the whole? But in the past ten years our Thanksgivings have drastically changed, since my grandmother & grandfather have passed away. Now I'm beginning to love Christmas Eve and our homespun family traditions.
My cooking triumphs
Thanksgiving 2008--the whole family was sick, so we couldn't travel at the last minute. We bought a pre-cooked turkey, and then I whipped up the maple carrots, stir fry sesame green beans, salt potatoes, pumpkin pie & whipped cream in about two hours by kicking my husband & kids outside for a walk. We didn't feel all that great, but it was nice to have meals for three days out of that little two-hour cooking event.
My cooking tragedies
Since 1995 I have kept a journal of Kitchen Disasters, but the one that I think tops the list sas the year we tried to grill our Thanksgiving turkey ('05). It was beyond horrific--the infusing needle kept getting clogged with herbs, so when I tried to clean it out I shot sauce all over my glasses & face; then the turkey was taller than the grill would close, so we couldn't get an accurate reading on the internal temp of the grill; it took all day to cook although we were trying something new & exciting. We also tried to bake the pumpkin pie on the grill. HA HA HA!! That was very unwise. In the end we laughed so hard that we will retell the story year after year for a good belly ache!

Nana's Mashed Turnip
I doubled the recipe b/c I had so many potatoes--and it was devoured by the kiddos in no time. Calling it "Mashed Turnips" is a misnomer, though. This is mashed potatoes with added turnip. The turnip adds a nice unexpected sweetness every once-in-a-bite. You will really need to add salt to taste, and we added Herbomare and kelp to pop up the flavor, using a nice medley of multi-colored fingerlings for hte potatoes. Looked gorgeous with the purple skins ON and tasted really good. Saving this to the recipe box. Thanks.

Cauliflower Fritters
This is a "wow" on the tongue! I was pleasantly surprised. Read all reviews before starting, so I food processed yellow banana peppers and red onion in with the cauli. We only had one head of cauliflower, so I cut recipe in half. Next time I'll get another head of cauliflower! As we don't keep Italian dressing in the house I just added a mix of what might be equivalent: marjoram, sweet basil, kelp, freshly squeezed garlic, chives, parsley, tarragon, thyme, celery salt . . . but it still was lacking punch, so I added quite a bit of salt and then some paprika. Once it fried in the olive oil (with a wee bit of butter cut in), it was amazing! Thank you for this. I can see adding leftover mashed potatoes to the mix, kale, or artichoke hearts next time. It's a very flexible recipe--heat it up, mellow it out--all in your personal taste & preferences. Will stick this one in the recipe box to use again & again. And, no leftovers at all--phenomenal with a little aioli garlic mustard sauce on top, too! mmMMMmmm.

Roast Pork Loin Chop
I was sorely disappointed in this recipe. Even with added garlic salt on top & beer replacing water per others' suggestions, the pork was bland, bland, bland. I followed cooking times to the letter, and it STILL came out dry, too. Bummer.
