Mexican Turkey Burgers

Reviewed: Oct. 17, 2005
Loved it! My husband told me this goes on his favorite dishes list. My only suggestion is to make sure you use the "burrito size" tortillas if you want to be able to wrap and pick it up. We used the "soft taco" size and ended up eating it open faced with a fork and knife. Kept it from being too messy -- depends how you want to eat it.

Pecan Pie V

Reviewed: Oct. 17, 2005
Delicious! I was so happy that my first ever pecan pie came out great thanks to this recipe. As another reviewer said, I got a little confused about the oven temp (pre-heated it to 350 but it says to cook it at 400 for the first ten minutes), so I don't know if my oven temp was perfect, but the pie still came out great! Just preheat your oven to 400 and then turn it down to 350 after 10 minutes of baking. I highly recommend this recipe.

Cinnamon Cranraisin Bread

Reviewed: Oct. 18, 2005
Delicious! I followed this recipe exactly and the bread came out great. I wasn't paying attention to the different rising times, so I may have put the cranberries in during the wrong mixing time, but it still tasted wonderful.

Fresh Asparagus Soup

Reviewed: Oct. 19, 2005
We thought this soup tasted great. We had it with grilled ham and cheese sandwiches -- delicious meal! I followed the recipe exactly and it was pretty easy to make. The only slightly difficult part was making sure it was being stirred at various points while also adding ingredients. Tasty meal when asparagus is on sale :-)

Pumpkin Chili Mexicana

Reviewed: Oct. 25, 2005
We loved this chili -- very hearty! I also loved the extra healthiness the pumpkin provided, and I think that made the food taste even better in my mind (an added benefit to all already great tasting chili). As other reviewers said, you don't even taste the pumpkin, but I think it adds a nice texture and thickness to the chili. **Added note: I made this again and made it a little healthier the second time around by using olive oil instead of vegetable oil, and using "no salt added" canned products where I could (tomatoes, corn).

Pumpkin Dessert

Reviewed: Oct. 27, 2005
As everyone else has said, this was wonderful! I made it for a get together and everyone loved it. I followed some reviewers' advice and added extra brown sugar to the pumpkin mixture.

London Broil II

Reviewed: Oct. 27, 2005
Delicious marinade! I inly had time to marinade for 3 hours, but it still tasted great, I look forward to making it again and allowing it to marinade longer. I used the whole recipe for a smaller size of meat, and it seemed like a perfect amount (we like things saucy and with lots of flavor). Also, we don't have a barbque so I just put this in the broiler.

Bread Machine Challah I

Reviewed: Oct. 27, 2005
So tasty and moist! I am still pretty new at using the bread machine, so I got nervous when it looked really wet during the rising time. Much to my relief it came out perfectly! We love the taste, and my husband said it's his new favorite bread. I followed another reviewer's advice and took the bread out of the machine right when it was finished so it would not continue to cook/get brown.

Fluffy French Toast

Reviewed: Oct. 29, 2005
This was good, but not the greatest french toast I've ever had. It appealed to me because many reviewers said it was not soggy, but I found it a little too dry. Perhaps because I used a denser bread (challah bread) with pretty thick slices? Overall good taste, it just didn't wow me.

Wonderful recipe! The spices are perfect, and it was so fun to make a lot and give it away to people. I highly recommend this pumpkin bread!

Pork Chops with Fresh Tomato, Onion, Garlic, and Feta

Reviewed: Oct. 31, 2005
Wonderful recipe! I followed the other reviewer's advice and braised the pork chops in chicken broth. It was the fist time I ever had pork chops that I didn't think were too dry. And the tomato topping had so much delicious flavor! I will definitely be making this again.

Fasoliyyeh Bi Z-Zayt (Syrian Green Beans with Olive Oil)

Reviewed: Oct. 31, 2005
Very tasty! I used fresh green beans, and this recipe gave them a nice, subtle flavor. I think they were a little too oily and will use less olive oil next time.

Ziti With Olives and Sun-Dried Tomatoes

Reviewed: Nov. 4, 2005
I did not include the anchovies -- not a flavor we enjoy. However, the meal was very bland and dry (perhaps because I didn't use the anchovies?). My husband thought this was ok (why I gave it 2 stars) but I did not like it.

Savory Chicken Breasts

Very flavorful and tastey. I did not add the butter on top or use all of the bread crumbs, but it came out great!

Pasta, Broccoli and Chicken

Reviewed: Nov. 19, 2005
So tastey!! We loved this pasta!! I cubed the chicken before cooking it, and then I cooked it in a frying pan with a little olive oil, lemon juice, and garlic powder which gave the chicken a nice flavor. I suggest starting the boiling water right away like the recipe says. I waited a little while and forgot how long it does take for water to boil, and then you can time it so the pasta is done at the same time as the sauce. I followed other reviewers' suggestions and added a third tablespoon of pesto and that seemed like a great amount. We love tomatoes so next time I would add more. GREAT recipe!

Split Pea and Sausage Soup

Reviewed: Nov. 19, 2005
This soup had great flavor, but (I don't know what I did wrong...) I could not get a good consistency. I followed the recipe as directed and got the last instruction that said "simmer until peas are soft but NOT mushy." I had never made split pea soup before, so I did not expect that it would take 2 HOURS for the peas to get soft. The liquid kept evaporating so I added more water periodically (make sure you cover with a lid), but I was never quite sure what the "soft but not mushy" consistency was supposed to be. When I have eaten split pea soup before it was very smooth, but was this supposed to be a little chunky? I cooked until I thought the peas were done but was very frustrated by the unexpected length of time it took (we ate a late dinner last night). The taste was enjoyable and we liked the kielbasa sausage flavor, but we did not like the consistency of the soup. Perhaps I did something wrong, but I wanted to write this in case anyone else comes across this problem.

Apple Pie by Grandma Ople

Reviewed: Nov. 19, 2005
Delicious, I loved how gooey this pie filling is! I did cheat and used store bought pie dough for the crust. I read a lot of the reviews and made many of the suggestions listed: I brushed bottom of crust with egg whites to keep it from getting soggy, added a tsp. of cinnamon, dash of nutmeg, and tbs. of vanilla to the syrup (and took out a tbs. of the water to make up for adding the vanilla), poured the syrup over the apples before putting the lattice crust on, and baked on the bottom rack of the oven to keep the crust from getting too brown. I also ended up cooking it a little longer because when I stabbed the apples in the center with a knife they were still a little crispy. You will love this apple pie!

French Toast I

Reviewed: Nov. 19, 2005
Great, classic french toast. I added all of the spices as suggested and enjoyed the taste, although I would probably use less nutmeg next time. I used the rest of a loaf of french bread that we had bought the night before, so that made it extra tastey. I also followed another reviewer's suggestion and covered the pan with a lid so the middle would also cook.

Whole Wheat Honey Bread

Reviewed: Nov. 27, 2005
We loved this bread! It was slightly sweet, soft and slightly dense, and healthy. I followed this recipe almost exactly but used the basic bread setting instead of wheat as another reviewer suggested. I also used heart healthy margerine and a little less salt. Delicious!

Whipped Mashed Potatoes

Reviewed: Nov. 27, 2005
Good simple mashed potatoes. We made these for Thanksgiving to have a somewhat healthier version for my dad who has just gone on a heart healthy diet, so we used a little less margerine. They were a little bland, but that was what we wanted in order to keep them somewhat healthy -- the tasty stuff is usually the "bad" stuff. They had great texture.
