Chocolate Chip Almond Bread

Reviewed: Aug. 20, 2005
I will give my change to the recipe 5 stars :). I used 2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour and 1/2 cup bread flour to make the bread more nutritious. I also did not use the orange butter stuff because it just adds extra fat. This bread is great slightly warmed with or without butter. I also use soy milk instead of cow's milk.

Sweet Potato Pie I

Reviewed: Oct. 24, 2009
Great, solid recipe. The biggest fault of this recipe is it calls for white sugar. A perfect sweet potato pie should have brown. I use brown and this recipe becomes the best one I've ever had. I use 2 cups of canned sweet potatoes instead of taking the time to boil them.

Roasted Winter Squash Seeds

Reviewed: Nov. 8, 2009
This would be 5 stars if it included these changes: 1) Don't rinse the seeds, they taste better with their own juices 2) Soak in a bit of salty water for awhile to plump up the seeds 3) Drain water but still don't rinse 4) Let air dry before baking. If you don't have time for the soaking, at least don't rinse them and let them dry longer before baking. They just turn out better if they are dry before baking. My favorite are carnival squash seeds. Pumpkin seeds pale in comparison to all the other winter squash available!

Decadent Peanut Butter Pie

Reviewed: Nov. 18, 2009
Way too rich but otherwise restaurant quality (better than Baker's Square PB cup pie!). I used fat free cream cheese & whipped topping to cut back on unnecessary fat. I also used Smucker's special recipe dark chocolate topping instead of hot fudge because it has less fat. I had a 1/16th slice and had trouble finishing it, which is too rich for me. I adore peanut butter but I think that is part of the problem. Next time I would use less peanut butter and more whipped topping to lighten it. Perhaps also a bit more chocolate on top.

This is Rocco DiSpirito's recipe from Food Network, she should give credit where it's due!

Coffee Butter Frosting

Reviewed: Aug. 23, 2010
Pretty yummy, but it does need a stronger coffee flavor. I think espresso would be the best. I made it a second time using amaretto in place of coffee (2 tablespoons) and this was also quite good.

Stuffed Bell Peppers

Reviewed: Aug. 25, 2010
Very tasty, filling and healthy if you use brown rice and definitely farmer's market peppers! The recipe calls for 2 cups of tomato sauce, which is a bit much. I also prefer mixing the cheese into the sauce. It works well with Boca soy crumbles or I suppose you could substitute ground beef or turkey.

Best Big, Fat, Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookie

Reviewed: Aug. 1, 2010
I'm quite surprised by just how high this cookie is rated. The cookie is sticky, way too sticky, and my first thought when I bit into was, "I want a little cookie with my chocolate chips". It could've used about half the amount of chocolate chips and I LOVE chocolate chips. The cookies stuck to the greased cookie sheet and even eating them they were sticky. I made it exactly as written and wound up with 16 cookies, not 18. I would only make this recipe again with half the amount of chips and if I could figure out how to make it less sticky.

Cranberry Sauce

Reviewed: Nov. 11, 2010
Way too sweet. Using orange juice over water adds extra sugar/calories and taste that takes away from the tart nature of the cranberries. I would also recommend less sugar. No reason to take healthy cranberries and ruin them in a sugar-laden sauce.

Mom's Zucchini Bread

Reviewed: Jul. 30, 2012
I agree you should review a recipe as is, without making changes. As is, this recipe needs more zucchini, is too sweet and too oily. I also thought slightly bland, where it could use some brown sugar and perhaps some nutmeg. It's a common recipe quite similar to many others online. I prefer less sugar, more zucchini, some brown sugar and wheat flour and applesauce instead of oil.

Deviled Eggs I

Reviewed: Nov. 21, 2005
Okay, people need to stop rating things with 5 stars, and then say, "I changed this and that and then this, and it was great!". You should rate the recipe based EXACTLY on the recipe. This one was not very good. Not enough mayo, needs salt, and mixing in the paprika was not to my tastes.

Eggplant Tomato Bake

Reviewed: Aug. 22, 2010
Soooo boring and the texture is a bit funky! This just has nothing special to bother. Tomatoes and eggplant together-meh-nothing special. This recipe needs some spices, or perhaps some sprinkling of Italian breadcrumbs and olive oil. I would not bother making it again.

Easy Eggless Chocolate Cake

Reviewed: Aug. 23, 2010
I tried this cake twice. Per recipe, it has a VERY sticky, funky texture and barely any chocolate taste. Modified, I added 1/4 cup cocoa and used applesauce in place of the oil. This actually improved the taste and texture a bit, but not enough. Frosting covers it up some, but I can't get over the texture.

Flapper Pie I

Reviewed: Feb. 16, 2014
It was like drinking almond, egg sugar soup. I tried cooking later at 425 for another 20 minutes, until crust was almost burnt, and it was finally edible and no longer soupy, raw eggs. Regardless, it was way too sweet. No reason to ever need so much sugar. And I love almond extract, but it overpowered the recipe. Might try again but would make huge changes, including actually cooking the pie.

Grandma's Egg Custard Pie

Reviewed: Nov. 13, 2010
Almost $10 of ingredients down the tube. This was a disaster. I used a deep dish pie crust, put a pan under it for spill over and it burned on the pan stinking up the oven. The crust dissolved (yes, I brushed it with egg white).
