Apple Pie by Grandma Ople

Reviewed: Sep. 22, 2009
I'm sorry I really wanted to love this pie. It's been in my recipe box for a couple years now and I just made it today and I wasn't thrilled with it. It was edible, not the worst pie I've ever had but I've made better apple pies from this site. The filling wasn't thrilling, kinda bland. Also, the apples really didn't hold together very well. I couldn't serve it in a slice, it was just pile of apples with some crust under it on a plate. I used the recipe for "vinegar and egg crust" from this site and that was good. Sorry I don't think I'll use this recipe again. I am going to try to find an apple pie that really "wows" my taste buds and hopefully stays in slice form when served. ps. I really don't like when people give a recipe five stars after completely altering it. I made this recipe exactly as written. I didn't change a thing. I'm sure if you change this recipe it may be better but I'm rating the actual recipe as written.

Vinegar and Egg Crust

Reviewed: Sep. 22, 2009
I think this was pretty good. Very flaky! I think I"ll add a little sugar next time or something cuz I think it could use a little more sweetness. I'll definitely use this one again, though. Oh, it is extremely difficult to work with but it is still worth it.

This isn't really like other coffee cakes I've had before. It was good but not really what I was expecting.

Fresh Apple Omelet

Reviewed: Sep. 2, 2009
This is really good. I didn't have any apples so I used sliced strawberries. I didn't double the mixture. I was only serving 2 people. We each had half with an english muffin on the side. I'll definitely make this again. I might play around with it a bit.

Baked Teriyaki Chicken

Reviewed: Sep. 1, 2009
My husband really liked this. I made it with "restaurant fried rice" from allrecipes. I used boneless skinless chicken breast instead of the thighs, but that was the only thing I changed. Very good. I think personally I would give it 4 stars but my husband gave it 5 and that's what really matters. :) ok. so I also doubled the sauce which is completely unnecessary. I had a ton of sauce left over. And personally, I think they would be better broiled or grilled rather than baked.

Spiced Banana Bread

Reviewed: Sep. 1, 2009
I thought this was just ok. I've had better. It really wasn't very moist and it didn't rise much. Actually, I made one loaf and used the rest of the batter as muffins and the muffins rose ok but the loaf didn't rise at all. Really strange. I didn't change a thing in the recipe. I usually tinker with recipes but since I haven't made banana bread before I just made it the way it was written. It was dryer than other banana breads I've had before and not fluffy at all. I didn't really like the spice flavor either. However , It did make me crave pumpkin pie! These weren't inedible I just might try to find a different recipe that is more moist and doesn't have the "spice" that is kinda strange with banana.

Zucchini Brownies

Reviewed: Sep. 1, 2009
These were very good! I made them as cupcakes so I could wrap them individually and freeze them and have one occasionally. They are really good even after thawing from frozen. Actually, I think they were better thawed then fresh from the oven. I prefer a cakier brownie so next time I might add an egg and make them like actual brownies instead of cupcakes. very good. Oh and I didnt frost them because I don't really like frosting on brownies so I'm rating it just on the brownie without the frosting.

Garlic Chicken Fried Chicken

Reviewed: Aug. 19, 2009
excellent! I altered it slightly but not much. I didn't have bread crumbs so I put Club Crackers (20) and 1/4 cup oats (need fiber!!) in the food processor with the spices and ground them until they were fine (I added just bit of crushed red pepper too). In the egg mixture I added a dash of Cumin (because I love cumin in eggs). I let the chicken breasts marinate in a little balsamic vinegar for a few hours prior to cooking and I fried in my deep fryer (its easier and doesn't set my smoke detectors off) for 7 minutes at 375 degrees. I'm finishing it right now but I had just a taste of the one that came out first and it was fantastic. I'll update with my husbands response later.

Vickie's Beer Bread

Reviewed: Aug. 19, 2009
Everyone really liked this. I thought it was ok. Not QUITE as good as the tastefully simple boxed beer bread. I can't understand why though since the ingredients are the same and I used the same type of beer as was used in the T.S. bread I had before. My four-yr-old niece lOVED it. It was a little TOO beer-y. So maybe a little less beer. It's better with Cheddar and garlic. I made this a few ways. I tried with a smoked bacon-cheddar cheese and that was the best. Just mix the shredded cheese in with the flour.

Roast Potatoes

Reviewed: Aug. 19, 2009
not great. Too potato-ey. The flavor wasn't very strong and the outside wasn't crispy at all. I'm not a big fan of potatoes so I normally wouldn't even choose this as a side dish but I was cooking for my inlaws and needed a side dish for a roast. nobody really liked them. They weren't the worst potato dish I've had but I won't make them again.

Teena's Overnight Southern Buttermilk Biscuits

Reviewed: Aug. 19, 2009
While they rose very high which is good, they weren't the best. Fairly bland. However, I had to use buttermilk substitute. I'll try these again but I think I'll use butter flavored shortening as one reviewer suggested and I'll get some real buttermilk. Also, makes more than what it says. I adjusted the recipe to make 12, I used a glass to cut out the biscuits and the mouth is 3 1/2 inches and it made 13. If you were using a two inch cutter, you would have a lot more biscuits than you were expecting. I rolled mine fairly thick too. I'm trying to find a recipe (or create one) that mimicks the buttermilk biscuits at the Loveless Cafe in Tennessee. These don't even TOUCH those biscuits. Better than others I've tried. But still just OK.

Spicy Peach Chicken

Reviewed: Jul. 21, 2009
This was really good. I used boneless skinless chicken breasts instead of a whole chicken and a homemade cajun seasoning instead of creole, but I don't think that they are much different. I highly suggest peach preserves from the famous Loveless cafe in Tennessee. They are the best ever!

Breakfast Sausage

Reviewed: Jun. 26, 2009
This is the BEST sausage I have ever had! My husband loved it, too! He told me to never buy packaged sausage again. I tried to keep it as close as I could to how it was written. Except I didn't have any sage so I subbed for half the amount of italian seasoning and doubled the marjoram. I like maple sausage so I put about a tablespoon of syrup in, too. Absolutely fantastic! I had been wondering what to do with the ground pork that was in my freezer from my uncle-in-law's farm and I'm really glad I used it to make this sausage! It's really annoying to waste really good meat in a really bad recipe! Thanks for posting this! AWESOME!!! update: I made this with ground turkey this morning and it is just as good. great recipe!!

Sauteed Apples

Reviewed: May 23, 2009
I thought this tasted very good. A few tips, however: 1) I don't think the cornstarch is necessary. 2) I cut the recipe down to 2 servings because I only have myself and my husband to feed and I was using it as a waffle topping because I was out of syrup. I used 1 apple (red delicious sliced thicker and not sauted as long worked wonderfully) but the sauce was pretty much non-existant. it covered the apples but there wasn't anything left so I concocted the sauce without the apples to have more syrup. worked well. 3) I tried one reviewer's idea and added nutmeg and vanilla. The vanilla was a good addition but I didn't really care for the nutmeg. It didn't ruin the recipe, but it didn't add anything to it either and it smelled funny. I think the recipe is great tasting as is but if you decrease the number of apples, you still need to keep the same amount of sauce or you just have flavored apples, no sauce. remember, if you use a softer apple, just decrease the sautee time to a minute or two instead of 6 minutes. You just have to get them warm because they're already soft. PS. Anyone who thought this recipe was disgusting must have done something wrong. I don't think I would eat it by itself, though, use as a topping for something. But it is definately NOT disgusting. My husband gave it five stars, too.

Tomato Bread Salad

Reviewed: Apr. 15, 2009
This was a really good salad. I am giving it a 4 instead of 5 because I thought it was a bit boring as written. I added black olives, feta cheese and used Kraft sundried tomato vinegarette dressing. I didn't have fresh basil and neither did the grocery store so I had to use dried. I was pretty bummed out about that. I'm sure fresh would be way better. I will make this again though and I'll be more prepared next time and make sure I have fresh basil. I also thought the bread to produce ratio was a bit off. Too much bread not enough tomatoes and onions. I just added a bit more of each. also, I halved it and it still will serve 4 to 6 people a decent sized serving. I didn't use the dressing it called for but I used very little of the Kraft dressing so I would have to say that as written, the dressing it called for would be sufficient. The tomato juices moisten the bread some too. I think next time I will use cherry tomatoes sliced in half though to cut back on the tomato juice. This time I used Roma tomatoes.

Southern Potato Salad

Reviewed: Apr. 15, 2009
this is literally the best home made potato salad I've ever eaten ever. Second best potato salad to this one I got at this little grocery store once. This is super super good. I minced a dill pickle because I didn't have relish but kept everything else the same. seriously awesome! I'm impressed.

Strawberry Oatmeal Breakfast Smoothie

Reviewed: Apr. 7, 2009
well, I thought this was going to be great. I didn't have soy milk but used skim and since one other reviewer said they make it with skim and they gave it 5 stars, I figured it would be ok. This was very bland. I doubled the recipe for two people but used about 1/2 the oat meal. Still bland. Husband says its chalky. not the worst thing I've ever eaten but Pretty disappointing. Ended up having to add coconut extract to add some flavor because we couldn't taste ANYTHING. Maybe just leave out the oatmeal? I don't know. I really wanted a good smoothie tonight because I just got a new blender and hadn't used it yet and I'm very disappointed.
