Sarge's EZ Pulled Pork BBQ

Reviewed: Mar. 24, 2008
Holy lip smacking good!! This is, hands down, bar none, the BEST pulled pork I have ever had!! I had a 6.5lb pork butt roast, cut it in half and trimmed off some of the really visible fat on the bottom of it (but left much of it for flavor), put it in the crock pot, poured a can of beef broth and the coffee over it and let it do its thing! The only thing I changed was the time. I started it at 10:00 last night and when I got up this morning at 5am it seemed good but wasn't quite as tender as I'd like, probably because it's a bigger roast. So I let it go on low all day while I was at work. Came home at 4:00 - it literally fell off the bone it was so tender, I had to actually use a spoon to get it out of the crock pot! Took a couple of forks and shredded it... perfection! So it cooked a looooong time... about 15 hours. I have to tell you - the longer it cooks, the more tender and flavorful it gets! Do NOT be afraid to let it cook on low all night and all day before you serve it! Poured a bottle of Sweet Baby Ray's honey BBQ sauce and put it back in the crock pot for another hour to let the flavors blend. Served it with cole slaw (I like to put slaw on top of it on the roll) and I've got to tell you, there's nothing much tastier than this! This is hands down a favorite in my household from now on!

Chocolate Trifle

Reviewed: Apr. 13, 2008
I made this for a memorial wake for a friend of mine and the it was the first thing gone off the dessert table! I used regular Cool Whip to mix with the chocolate pudding and milk, and I used Cool Whip Lite for the layers between. I also used a dark chocolate brownie mix from Duncan Hines. I think those two changes made it a touch less sweet but it was still plenty sweet enough! Sprinkled semi-sweet mini chocolate chips on top and it was beautiful and delicious! Definitely going into my regular dessert for company rotation!

Satiny Chocolate Glaze

Reviewed: Mar. 24, 2008
Fabulous! I microwaved it, just seemed easier that way. Did 20 seconds and then stirred, 4 times so a total of 1 minute 20 seconds. Very smooth, poured so nicely over my cake and stayed where it landed! I poured it over a devil's food bundt cake and then sifted some powdered sugar on top for effect. A gorgeous and delicious cake made even better by this perfect glaze!

Oven Pot Roast

Reviewed: Dec. 29, 2007
Absolutely perfect! It came out so tender we barely needed knives! I did a 4 lb sirloin roast for 2 1/2 hours in a dutch oven with a foil tent over it and it couldn't have come out any better! Just ever so pink in the middle, tender and juicy throughout! And the gravy... heaven! It was thin coming out of the oven of course, more like au jus, so I added 2 TBSP of flour and put it on the stove and stirred with a whisk non-stop until it was thickened and bubbly and it was perfect! This will be my only pot roast recipe from now on!

Sugar Coated Pecans

Reviewed: Nov. 19, 2007
I have to add something to my review below - I served these today to nibble on before/after Thanksgiving dinner. My husband, aka the world's pickiest eater, was attacking them like they're candy! He asked me where I bought them - I was SO happy to say "I didn't buy them, I made them!" He actually looked surprised and said "You made them this way?!" and promptly grabbed another handful! Score one for wifey! LOL WOW are these amazing!! Pecans are my absolute favorite nut and this recipe just made them even better! I just made a pound tonight for Thanksgiving but I'm not sure they're going to make it! I may be making another batch Wednesday night! The only change I made was to use 2 egg whites, and 2 tsp of water and 1 tsp of vanilla. Just enough vanilla to give a hint to the flavor but not overpowering. Positively addicting!

Shrimp Scampi Bake

Reviewed: May 28, 2007
Delicious! I realized halfway into this that I didn't have dijon mustard, but I did have spicy brown so I used about 3 well rounded teaspoons of that instead. Used minced garlic, and cut the butter to about 3/4 cup. I also sprinkled some parmesan cheese on top for the last 5 minutes of baking to make a nice crust and help the sauce really stick to the shrimp. It was absolutely delicious! I served it over white rice. Would and will definitely make this again!

Tuna Noodle Casserole I

Reviewed: Jul. 9, 2006
Delicious and easy - my two favorite things!! I did have to put about 1/2 cup more milk in to make it nice and creamy. Otherwise I think it may have come out a little dry. I sprinkled some extra cheese and some bread crumbs on top before baking to make a nice topping. Very nice - will definitely be a regular in my recipe box!

Actually Delicious Turkey Burgers

Reviewed: Jul. 1, 2006
Delicous! I scaled the recipe down to 1 lb of ground turkey to make 4 burgers since there's only 2 of us in our house. Didn't have a garlic clove so I used a tsp of garlic powder which was just as good I thought. I used a Tupperware hamburger press to make 4 perfectly shaped 1/4 lb burgers and then grilled for 6 minutes per side on the gas grill at medium/high heat. They were delicious!

Canadian Barn BBQ Sauce

Reviewed: Jun. 11, 2006
In a word... YUM! I used this on some chicken breasts on the grill, marinated them for about an hour before grilling and then basted while they were cooking. I had set some aside to use for dipping when we were eating. Maybe a touch too sweet for my taste, I think next time I'll make a batch with a little less brown sugar. But still... delicious!!

Homestyle Turkey, the Michigander Way

Reviewed: Nov. 22, 2005
This was positively delicious! I sprayed the foil with Pam before putting it on the turkey to keep it from sticking - it worked beautifully! And I basted the bird every 45 minutes with chicken broth. Took the foil off for the last 45 minutes and it browned beautifully. I put slices of butter under the skin on the breast and the drumsticks so everything was tender and juicy. My family LOVED this - my brother in law said it was absolutely delicious and didn't even want any gravy on it! Thanks!!!

Chocolate Eclair Dessert

Reviewed: Sep. 17, 2005
Using a can of frosting microwaved for about 30 seconds makes it SO much easier to spread on the top. This has become my "signature" dessert. I have a friend who won't let me in her house for any social event without this! It's by far the most popular dessert I've ever made. And it's so easy! Definitely better made a few hours before serving and putting in the fridge to let the graham crackers soften a bit. Then... perfection!

Alyson's Broccoli Salad

Reviewed: Jun. 25, 2005
I have to add another comment to this wonderful recipe. My husband is the world's pickiest eater and he LOVED this! The shocker to me is, last night he said "you need to make that broccoli salad again"!!!! I couldn't believe it! He already eats broccoli, but the combination of all the ingredients makes a delicious salad that even my super picky husband loves! THANK YOU!!!

Judy's Strawberry Pretzel Salad

Every time I have this dessert the pan comes home empty! It's my favorite, my friend's favorite - everyone I know LOVES it!! It's a great dessert to nibble on after the dinner/dessert dishes are cleared. Like when playing cards with friends... this is a wonderful treat to munch on all night!

Brown Sugar Meatloaf

Reviewed: Mar. 1, 2007
I forgot to mention that to make it a bit healthier, I used a pound and a half of ground turkey instead of ground beef. It was just as flavorful as can be - and better for you to boot!

Kickin' London Broil with Bleu Cheese Butter

Reviewed: Jun. 4, 2006
Holy cow was this delicious!! I used a couple of Porterhouse steaks though, we just like them better. I shook some McCormick Montreal steak spice on both sides of the steaks, grilled for about 10 minutes on each side and they came out perfectly medium well. I sauteed a vidalia onion in some butter, and made the bleu cheese butter which was phenomenal! The whole meal was an explosion of deliciousness in my mouth! This butter recipe is definitely a must for steak lovers and is going in my recipe box permanently!

Fast and Friendly Meatballs

Reviewed: Dec. 8, 2007
Absolutely delicious! I did make a couple of additions/changes - I used meatloaf mix (beef/pork/veal), and added 2 TBSP of parmesan cheese and 2 tsp crushed garlic for extra flavor. Baked them according to the recipe then put them in a pot of sauce to simmer for a couple hours. They were fantastic! Definitely a keeper!

World's Best Lasagna

Reviewed: Sep. 7, 2011
The best lasagna AND sauce I have ever had! I made a double batch of the sauce to have some to freeze and plenty for the lasagna. This was hands down the most delicious lasagna ever. Making my own sauce using this recipe is the only way I will ever go again!

Caramel Filled Chocolate Cookies

Reviewed: Dec. 11, 2005
Made these with a group of friends at our cookie baking party yesterday... they were a lot of work and pretty messy in the making but boy were they worth it! YUM!! We used Hershey's caramel kisses in the middle and they came out to die for! VERY chocolatey and had a little pool of caramel in the middle. Terrific! Definitely a keeper!

Salmon with Brown Sugar and Bourbon Glaze

Reviewed: Dec. 25, 2005
This was very good. I made it for Christmas Eve dinner for my husband and me and we both enjoyed it. I do think the glaze was too thick though... it was actually more like caramel with a boubon kick than a glaze/sauce. It was very tasty though and I will serve it again!

German Potato Pancakes

Reviewed: May 17, 2009
They tasted delicious and crisped up nicely in the pan. However, they were basically hash browns! Didn't hold their pancake shape at all. As soon as I moved them to turn, they fell apart and basically became a pan of hash browns. Happened with every batch I fried. But again, 4 stars for the taste and texture because they were yummy and I didn't have any leftovers so it's still a winner!
