I cook/eat meat/poultry, soy, canola, cottonseed, dairy and msg free (along with all the hidden names of msg). Because of my food choices it means that I can't go out to eat anywhere mainly due to the use of soy and MSG in seemingly everything! While I have been a fish eating vegetarian for the past 3 years, I had become so dependent on Soy as a protein and meat substitute I am having to learn new recipes on a daily basis. Thank goodness there are people who have taken the time to upload recipes that I can use or alter enough that it works. I have been completely soyfree for 7 months now. And it's been 6 months since I've used any milk product. Oh how I miss butter. But once I found out about the pus in dairy and how the cows are treated for the dairy industry I had to give it up. There is a restaurant called "Five Guys" and they make fresh french fries using peanut oil and potatoes. I finally have a fast food place I can go to!
My favorite things to cook
Everyday I make a loaf of bread with my breadmachine as there are no loaves of bread at the supermarket that don't either have soy or MSG in them. I have mastered making mayonnaise, and I've found tuna that isn't in vegetable broth. I still have been unable to find relish that doesn't have MSG in it, so I chop up bread and butter pickles and use those instead. Now we are finally able to have tuna fish salad sandwiches. There is a recipe on here for Fragoli Soup and it's delicious. I used to love making lasagna, but it's not the same without the cheeses, so I'll make spaghetti sauce instead. I am a bad vegetarian/vegan as I do eat fish. Kroger sells shark fillets, and I've perfected cooking them like chicken fried steak and they taste just like chicken. There's also a recipe on here for zucchini brownies that are frosted. They rock.
My favorite family cooking traditions
So much emotion is tied to food. So much friendship was going out to dinner at a restaurant. I've decided that completely turning myself and my husband into a hermit isn't worth it. If there is a special occasion, I'm going to remain meat/poultry free, but I'll wolf down the soy and msg like there's no tomorrow. I never could stand it when at a birthday party someone wouldn't eat a piece of cake because of their diet. I will not turn down a piece of cake if it meant something to the person that was offering it to me.
My cooking triumphs
I'm still very excited about the whole mayo thing. I just found a recipe for cocktail sauce so I'm anxious to make that too.
My cooking tragedies
I was steaming some potatoes with a strainer pot and got sidetracked. I walked into the kitchen and thought something smelled like barbeque. My husband asked me if there was still water in the bottom pot. No, no water. The pot became part of the burner and had glued itself onto it.
We had to pry it off.
