After-Thanksgiving Turkey Soup

Reviewed: Dec. 28, 2007
Very enjoyable soup. I picked all the good leftover meat off the turkey before I put the carcass in the pot. This is my least favourite part of any turkey meal but having this soup as the end result was worth it. I followed the directions and found the consistancy just right. The amount of carrots and celery were good and although I thought that 3 onions might have been to much, it wasn't at all. I may try adding egg noodles instead of rice next time but that is just personal preference. This makes lots so I plan to freeze some to enjoy over the cold winter. Thanks so much.

White Chocolate Raspberry Cheesecake

Reviewed: Dec. 26, 2007
Wow! Serve in small pieces. This is very rich and very good. Thanks to all the helpful reviewers. I did get a crack but although I take pride in presentation, under the soft candlelight of the Christmas dinner table this cake looked beautiful. Next time I make this I would increase the base crumb amount a bit and perhaps add more than 3 Tbsps. raspberry sauce between batter layers. A recent reviewer suggested to make sure the batter is well stirred to prevent lumps. I should have done that. For those who enjoy cheesecake this is a very flavourful one. Thanks for the recipe.

Gulliver's Cream Corn

Reviewed: Dec. 26, 2007
I wanted to try something a little different as a vegetable for Christmas dinner. Although I find canned creamed corn yucky, this recipe appealed to me. It was simple and quick to put together as the turkey was resting. I used evaporated milk instead of regular milk and used a little cayenne and a little white pepper. I may increase the cayenne slightly the next time. As promised, it thickened up beautifully but didn't get gloppy as it sat on the table. This was well liked by everyone and something that I will enclude in special future dinners. Thanks so much.

Mouth-Watering Stuffed Mushrooms

Reviewed: Dec. 26, 2007
I'm afraid this is the lowest I have ever rated but these were not liked at all. The texture of the mushrooms sitting in the little pools of moisture they made in the oven was very odd and unappetizing. My son and his girlfriend actually laughed. I did remove them from the table and had to throw them away.

Cappuccino in a Jar

Reviewed: Dec. 23, 2007
I just finished a cup. I really liked the fine hint of cinnamon and nutmeg in this drink. All of the flavours blended nicely. I made 1/2 of the recipe this time but I will certainly make the whole thing the next time.

Szechwan Shrimp

Reviewed: Dec. 14, 2007
I liked this very much. It didn't look or taste very promising just going by the made up sauce ingredients. The garlic and onion really rounded out the flavour. Be sure to double the sauce. I did not completely double the red pepper flakes-used a scant 3/4 tsp-. The spice level was tastable but not burning. My 12yr. old son had chosen to have spagetti instead of this for his dinner but I found him over the fry pan with a fork, eating the shrimp with a grin on his face. This was extreemly fast to put together. I served over rice, squeezed with a little lime juice and sprinkled very lightly with salt. Thank so much.

Better Than Best Fried Chicken

Reviewed: Dec. 13, 2007
I was not sure how this would turn out using cream of chicken soup in a fried chicken recipe. What a great surprise. I used my deep frier and cooked the chicken for about 9 minutes. As long as your frying oil is at the right temperature the coating should stay on. I stuck to the instructions and ingredients as written and was satisfied with the flavour. Some reviewers have mentioned how terribly messy the prep. was. I used tongs and a fork and didn't find this to be a problem ---but hey part of the fun in cooking is getting your fingers in the mix! I served this with a Caesar salad and asparagus. My family really enjoyed this chicken. I was scolded for not making enough for a late night snack. I'm sure I will make this again. Thanks for sharing the recipe.

Savory Herb Rice

Reviewed: Dec. 12, 2007
What a simple quick way to fancy up plain rice. My family really liked this. "ummm" they said with surprise upon tasting. I did add a little more chicken bouillon. I will use this recipe many times. Thanks!

Chicken and Cheese Stuffed Jumbo Shells

Reviewed: Dec. 10, 2007
These were enjoyed. As others have warned they do take quite a bit of time, although they were easy. I too, think a little more sauce is needed not to keep the shells from drying out, mine were fine, but the shells do soak up some liquid when baking and a little extra is required for when they are served. Using all the shells made more than I could fit in a 9 x 13" baking dish so I prepared them and froze the rest. It should feed 2 for another meal which is always nice. Thanks.

Ultimate Twice Baked Potatoes

Reviewed: Dec. 8, 2007
Everyone enjoyed these potatoes. Easy to make and they make a nice presentation on the plate. I served with meatloaf and asparagus. They are very good reheated the next day. Make sure you use large baking potatoes and don't scrape the skins out too thinly as advised by so many other reviewers. Thanks for the recipe.

Cathy's Banana Bread

Reviewed: Dec. 4, 2007
I'm with the majority of those who enjoyed both the ease and the great taste of this banana bread. It is very light. I used a bundt pan and otherwise followed the given directions. This sure won't last long. P.S. It makes your kitchen smell wonderful. Thanks for sharing this recipe.

Delectable Marinated Chicken

Reviewed: Dec. 4, 2007
Having plenty of chicken to cook I doubled this recipe. It was flavourful but not fabulous. Although I wouldn't cut out the liquid smoke I would use a little less. Everyone ate it without complaint though. Thanks for the recipe.

Asian Orange Chicken

Reviewed: Dec. 1, 2007
Really really good! Luckily I doubled the recipe as some went back for 3rds! I was told to put this in with our favourites and asked to make again tomorrow. Now those are good indications that this is one great recipe. I followed the directions as printed except kept my cooked chicken warming in the oven rather than adding it to the sauce. I will say that it took a little more time than my usual dinner prep time but the great flavours (which were also described to me during dinner)were certainly worth the result. I served over rice with steamed beans that I sauteed quickly in a little Asain Ginger Dressing (also from this site).

Lemon Blueberry Bread

Reviewed: Nov. 29, 2007
For some reason the walnuts did nothing for the flavour of this otherwise nice little bread. Perhaps it is just my families taste. This bread smelled heavenly while baking. To prevent the berries from sinking do the dusting in flour step but I took another reviewers suggestion to be sure to beat the eggs thouroughly when adding them. I had no problem as they dispersed evenly. I will try again without the nuts.

Buttery Rolls

Reviewed: Nov. 29, 2007
I was a little let down by my result with so many great reviews. I don't think 15 minutes is a long enough rising time. I also found that 24 rolls did not fit into my 9 x 13" ceramic baking pan so I used another 8 x 8" pan which happened to be metal. Oddly the rolls cooked up nicer in the metal pan. In any case they did get eaten so I will try again.

Sweet and Sour Pork III

Reviewed: Nov. 24, 2007
Very Very Good! I used pork tenderloin as that is what I had. It was delicious in this recipe. The sauce is just right not too sweet not too sour. I didn't find this all too time consuming as some had stated. I found it all came together quite quickly.I was told that the kitchen smelled like a Chinese restaurant. Will make this again for sure. Thank you so much for sharing this recipe.

Roasted Beets and Sauteed Beet Greens

Reviewed: Nov. 23, 2007
I was feeling adventurous wanting to try a new vegetable when I came upon this recipe. I followed the recipe excactly but did find that my beets took 1 and 1/2 hours to become tender. So figure in this extra time if your beets are on the large size as mine were. What was most surprising to me was the flavour or the greens. Delicious! I seasoned them with salt and pepper and doused with red wine vinegar. Beets are high in iron, fibre and vitamin C so you can fuel your body and delight your taste buds at the same time with this tasty side dish.

Jo's Rosemary Bread

Reviewed: Nov. 12, 2007
I hadn't used my breadmaker for quite some time but having some free time on a Sunday afternoon I thought I would give this bread a go. What a wonderful aroma! This bread turned out beautifully. It is all long gone and I have been requested to make another loaf tomorrow. Thanks so much for the recipe.

Chutney Chicken

Reviewed: Nov. 9, 2007
This wonderful recipe fed 6 people (2 kids included). I found Patak's Major Grey Mango Chutney. It must be an international brand. It was a mild chutney so I added 1/2 tsp. red pepper flakes. I also ran the chutney through the food processor to remove the big chunks as well as to stretch the quantity. I didn't salt the chicken thighs just to be sure it wasn't overpowered. Everyone cleaned their plate. Although I'm sure you could use other cuts of chicken the thighs are the perfect texture and turn out very moist. I served over rice with roasted parsnips and carrots and a cucumber salad as sides.Thank you so much for this recipe

Round Steak Sauerbraten

Reviewed: Nov. 7, 2007
This was kind of "ho hum" for my family. We all ate it over rice and the males even went back for seconds (they are always hungry). I doubled the recipe and added a little more brown sugar, vinegar and worchestershire sauce, but I found it to be uninteresting. Thanks anyway
