Cabbage Au Gratin

Reviewed: Aug. 1, 2015
We love cabbage and have had cabbage cooked in similar recipes but this one is just too too rich for a side dish. It is fine for people who like heavy rich side dishes but not to our taste. Sorry for this review but this is how we feel about it. Glad that some people did like it.

Buttery Cooked Carrots

Reviewed: Jul. 26, 2015
What a great simple recipe for carrots especially for people who like them sweet and so easy. Thanks...highly recommend. Maybe add a pinch of salt when cooking the carrots.

Bow Ties with Sausage, Tomatoes and Cream

Reviewed: Jul. 24, 2015
Love this combination but to get around the greasiness in the Italian sausage I simmer for about 5 mins. , drain and then cut up. Also after I brown them I blot them very well with paper towels. Hope this helps someone else otherwise no problems with this recipe except eating too much!!!!!

Pollock Montreal

Reviewed: Jul. 21, 2015
We do not eat polluck because it is only available frozen and that would be out but this recipe also works with fresh haddock. I do spice it up a little and scatter a few chopped black olives over the tomato. Also usually use swiss or Monterey Jack cheese and grate some parmesan over that. This recipe is certainly a good base and can see where it would give pollock a bit more taste.

Chef John's Banana Bread

Reviewed: Jul. 21, 2015
The first time I made this bread (as per recipe) I thought it was a little dry. Here are the changes I made to suit us. I reduced the flour to 1 3/4 cups and used a very full cup of bananas. Rather than the milk I subtituted yoghurt (or sour cream). Very happy with the end result but also I usually find I need to reduce our flour here by a few tablespoon. Guess it is a slightly different one. Thanks for an excellent recipe just had to make a few changes for us.

Grandma's Homemade Banana Bread

Reviewed: Jul. 19, 2015
This is about the only banana bread (with 3 bananas) I use anymore. Tried so many that were supposed to be great but this one always wins out. Highly recommend and no shortcuts or substitutions.

Magic Lemon Pie

Reviewed: Jul. 16, 2015
Excellent and much easier than a traditional lemon meringue pie. Add cream of tartar to the merangue is a trick my mother taught me and does make a big difference in the end result. Must try this pie again because I had forgotten it.

Iced-Spiced Ginger Bars

Reviewed: Jul. 15, 2015
These are probably the best ginger bar recipe on this site. Someone thought they should be like cookies.......bars are usually softer than a cookie and more moist. These are moist otherwise would not be eaten in this house. Thanks for finally producing a ginger bar that is easy and moist with excellent icing. I do make sure that the butter is at room temperature otherwise no changes needed. Can t make them too often or I will eat and eat.

Death By Chocolate III

Reviewed: Jul. 12, 2015
I have made this (smaller version for our family) but much prefer to use a dark chocolate cake...we found brownies just too heavy.Again this is a matter of taste. Also have made the instant pudding with 1/2 coffee liquer.....yum. These are just other ways of presenting this great dessert. No matter how it is made it is always eaten first.

Basil Chicken and Pasta

Reviewed: Jul. 4, 2015
Good recipe and easy but definitely needs spicing up. I add black olives, more garlic and sundried tomatoes. Now this, to us, gives it enough kick and certainly hot pepper flakes could be used. Definitely use fresh basil if possible and then it is in the gourmet category. Thanks for the basic recipe and a delight to work on.

Lemon and Raspberry Trifle in Mason Jars

Reviewed: Jul. 1, 2015
Very good with a sweet sherry but much better than pound cake is a sponge cake (many recipes on this site). Pound cake tends to be too dense for a trifle of any kind.

Lemon Cloud Pie II

This is exactly the same pie as I had many many years ago. Then I thought I had died and gone to heaven and still feel that way. If directions are followed exactly there will be no problems and yours guests will crown you.

Lemon Cake with Lemon Filling and Lemon Butter Frosting

Reviewed: Jun. 29, 2015
This is a lovely cake and, if made with cake flour, you will not have any heaviness. Follow other directions exactly and also remember it does require more time to put together than most cakes. My only reason for a 4 star rating is the use of all purpose flour.

Tomato Basil Salmon

Very simmple and tasty recipe but always use fresh basil when I have it and sometimes switch to dried oregano....depends on what herb you prefer. Serve with a lemon wedge, orange flavored rice and fresh asparagus....yum

Macomb's Irish Soda Bread

Reviewed: Jun. 19, 2015
This is certainly one of the better soda breads on this site but much too sweet for us......Irish bread really should be more savory at least that is what I grew up with We have to suit our own tastes and seeing I was weaned on the stuff have formed some pretty opinions. Anyway please try this and adjust sweetness to taste. Thanks....everyone should try this at least once.

Tomato Chicken Parmesan

Reviewed: Jun. 13, 2015
Great recipe and so tasty but I had to make a change because we do not like breaded chicken so just left it off and browned the chicken well on each side and did not overcook it. This work fine for us but am sure breading it is the way I will go for company.

One Pot Pasta

Reviewed: Jun. 10, 2015
Good basic and easy pasta dish but does need some more spices. A good addition is to swap out tomato sauce for a spicy marinara and add lots of garlic and chopped black peppers. Just use your imagination.

Summer Vegetable Ratatouille

We love vegetable mixtures like this especially when it can be reheated. Do prefer to use Japanese eggplant because it has a nicer texture. Sometimes eggplant can be rubbery. Thank for a lovely addition to my recipes files.
