Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies III

Reviewed: Jul. 7, 2009
I've made these a couple times and once they were perfect, the rest of the time they were tasty but crumbly. I'm usually good with cookies but I can't seem to get consistent results with this recipe.

Carrot Cake III

Reviewed: Jun. 1, 2009
This cake needs more spice and flavour for me. The icing was also too sweet. Next time I will try it with some of the recommendations in the reviews. Update: recommendations pay off! Please stop 5 starring recipes that you have to change so much though!!

Strawberry Muffins

Reviewed: May 24, 2009
The reciped as written is 2 stars - it is very bland. I have used many of the recommendations and tried this reciped a couple more times - added spices, vanilla, changed up the flour (whole wheat), changed the sugar and I still wouldn't give them more then a 4. There is still something missing, I think I might have to give up on this recipe soon.

Potato Pancakes II

Reviewed: Apr. 6, 2009
This is the best way to use up leftover mashed potatoes! The recipe as is is a bit bland - at least I like to add green onions and pepper. It is one of those recipes you can alter in a million ways though - the base is great.

Surprise Cake

Reviewed: Mar. 31, 2009
This cake is fantastic! It was so simple to make, turned out great the first time around and the flavour was wonderful. I will probably play with the frosting recipe a bit as I found it to be too sweet but my friends loved it.

Chocolate Cake Surprise

Reviewed: Feb. 10, 2009
To me this is a 4 star recipe only if the cake is warm when served - if you don't heat it up I find the cake too dry and the cream cheese topping doesn't really mix in at all. I was also hoping for a richer more chocolaty cake. I might just try some of the other similar recipes on this site or experiment a bit with my own cake recipes. I am going to have to resist adding that cream cheese topping to everything though - absolutely love that in place of frosting!

Easy Tortellini Soup

Reviewed: Feb. 8, 2009
I have never enjoyed a new recipe this much before, I was so surprised I actually made involuntary yummy noises! I did make a couple substitutions: instead of sugar and hot sauce I added about 1/3 cup ketchup and chili pepper flakes, I also didn't have wine in the house so skipped that. I did add the corn but will probably go with garbanzo beans next time to cut down the sweetness. I forgot to add the parmesan, probably because it tasted so good I didn't think it needed anything else. I'm already excited for leftovers for lunch tomorrow!

Super Hot Cereal Mix

Reviewed: Feb. 3, 2009
I am rating this recipe quite low because it is so bland and without a lot of additions I would not have eaten it (I tried). Here is what I did to bring it up to a 4 or maybe even 5 star recipe in my book: added 1/2 cup wheat germ, 1/2 cup dried apple bits, 2 additional tablespoons of brown sugar, 1 teaspoon salt, 2 teaspoons cinnamon, and substituted dried cranberries for the raisins (personal preference for that one). Basically it is a compilation of all the other suggestions already posted - thanks everyone! If you do tend to add sugar, honey or maple syrup to your cereal the extra sugar probably isn't necessary.

Rich Chocolate Frosting

Reviewed: Jan. 3, 2009
Absolutly perfect recipe! Switch out vanilla and some milk for Bailey's, eyeball measurements for smaller portions, slip on the milk and just add more sugar, it is so simple it is just impossible to screw up!

Chewy Maple Cookies

Reviewed: Nov. 24, 2008
These cookies turned out perfectly! I don't think I have ever made something without any alterations and had them be exactly what I was expecting. They are very sweet but the maple flavour is a nice change of pace, might try the walnuts next. Thanks!

Cherry Angel Food Cake

Reviewed: Nov. 24, 2008
My first attempt at angel food cake, I used all-pupose flour so that was probably the problem but it didn't even attempt to raise a little bit. My friends didn't know that it was supposed to be twice as high though and all raved about it, very tasty and I'm excited to try it again!

Lemon Cloud Pie II

Reviewed: Jun. 15, 2008
I'm not sure what I did wrong but this recipe barely worked out for me at all. The meringue crust was way too much for one pie shell but because I had never made anything like it before wasn't sure so just went with it. To me 8 servings for a pie means it is one pie, this recipe easily made enough for 2. The filling was good, I tasted as I went so added a bit less sugar and a bit more lemon, and it was perfect, I'll definitely be making that part of it again. But then I folded in the whipped cream and it never set. In the end I had a lemon pudding in a store bought crust for my family for dessert - not exactly what I was looking for.

Tortellini Pesto Salad

Reviewed: Jun. 15, 2008
Great and simple recipe. So easy to throw together and everyone loves it. The recipe itself is great but I have also made some substitutions due to lack of ingrediants in the house. Once I even just mixed some fresh pesto with mayo, added salt and pepper and that was it for the dressing. Still turned out great!

Moroccan Lentil Soup

Reviewed: May 28, 2008
Great soup! I don't use canned beans (I cook up raw ones before hand) so definitely had to add the suggested salt. Other then that this soup is pretty much perfect for a healthy, filling and tasty meal!

Curried Coconut Chicken

Reviewed: May 15, 2008
This recipe is a good base start with but rating the actual recipe, well it isn't that interesting. I did a lot of modifications, more curry, more garlic, more onion and addition of spices (cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg). After that I had a serveable curry but nothing spectacular. If you have never made curry before it is a good place to start but feel free to spice it up!

Beef Fried Rice

Reviewed: Nov. 6, 2007
Great recipe. I used this as a base when I last needed to clean out the fridge and just threw a bunch of veggies in: carrots, celery, broccoli, mushrooms. I would be careful with the soy sauce, mine is very dark and heavy so I halved the amount and it still turned out a bit too salty.

No Bake Cheesecake II

Reviewed: Nov. 6, 2007
I just made this for a friend's birthday and although it was a bit too sweet for me everyone else loved it (I'll cut the sugar in half next time). I made a couple changes: instead of the pie filling I folded in 1 cup blueberries, made my own crust (1 1/2 cup graham wafer crumbs, 1/3 cup melted better), used a square 8x8 deep glass pan. The berries I used were frozen, I partially defrosted them and even with the extra liquid the cake still firmed up quite well with a fun purple swirl throughout. Super easy and tasty, will definitely make again!

Pineapple Zucchini Muffins

Reviewed: Jun. 27, 2005
I changed this recipe a lot but it turned out really well. I only did a half batch and cut the oil to 1/2 cup and also cut down the sugar a bit. I substituted half of the flour for whole-wheat and used carrot instead of zucchini. I forgot to cut the pineapple in half so added the entire can with the juice. I found the muffins to be a bit too sweet but everyone in my house loved them!
