My favorite family cooking traditions
At Christmas time, we follow the Swedish tradition of "sju sorter kakor", or seven kinds of cookies. We usually have rum balls, pralines, spritz, almond bars, pepparkakor (gingersnaps) and whatever else suits our fancy that year!
My cooking triumphs
For my mother's birthday I made her a 4 layer carrot banana cake with cream cheese frosting, dying the frosting several colors and decorating with flowers. Definitely the fanciest cake I've ever made - and the tastiest! And it probably didn't hurt that I doused it with coconut rum! That, or one of the wine & cheese parties I've thrown - some may say I go overboard giving people lists of which hors d'oeuvres and cheeses go with which wine.
My cooking tragedies
I tried making a pecan pie when I was about 13. It came out completely burnt, but my dad ate the whole thing anyway!

Quinoa and Black Bean Chili
Delicious! Even my suspicious carnivore of a husband liked it and said he'd eat it again! We used a bag of frozen stir-fry veggies, plus a pepper and an onion for the vegetables. Great way to eat quinoa!

Disappearing Marshmallow Brownies
These were ok. I didn't have miniature marshmallows, so I took big ones and cut them up into 8 pieces each. They didn't melt even though the top and edges were all golden brown. I usually like marshmallows, but not when I'm expecting a blondie. The blondie to marshmallow ratio was off for me. They look nice, and you certainly get your sugar fix here, but just not satisfying for me.

Balsamic Roasted Pork Loin
so tender and flavorful - and simple! I used a cut of tenderloin I had in the freezer, and just marinated it while it defrosted for a couple hours in the fridge. Baked it while it was still a little frozen, and it still wound up tasting amazing! I served it with this: Garlicky-Baked-Butternut-Squash from the site.
